Just caught Covid so no point in having latest jab?

Got Covid last week. Only myself and DS (he got it too) in the house. No one else close to us has it. I've had an invite for a booster but it's a bit late isn't it? What would be the point? Prepared to be told different.

Check the advice but I think you're required to leave 12 weeks between a positive test and a vaccine dose.

FannyFifer · 01/11/2022 20:19

Can get it 28 days after positive test.

Furcoatandnoknickerz · 01/11/2022 22:30

I had mine booked for last Saturday, 28 days from my first positive test.
I was turned away as they are saying at the centres in my area, 28 days after first negative test. I was sent away to rebook. I didn’t feel well anyway, so I was quite pleased.

Well, other national health authorities recommend at least 3 months between Covid and any booster, because it doesn’t make any sense to overburden the immune system so soon after an infection.

Netherlands:
Make sure that it has been at least 3 months since your last vaccination or coronavirus infection.
www.government.nl/topics/coronavirus-covid-19/dutch-vaccination-programme/repeat-vaccination-against-coronavirus-2nd-booster

Australia:
If you have had COVID-19 you should wait to be vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine for 3 months after your confirmed infection.
www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines/getting-your-vaccination/booster-doses

New Zealand:
After you’ve had a COVID-19 infection, your antibody levels will be high from your immune system’s response to the infection. This will give you some protection against COVID-19.
After 3 months, your antibody levels from the infection are likely to have dropped and, if you are due to have a vaccine, this is a good time to be vaccinated to boost your immunity.
If you get a vaccination soon after you’ve been infected, you might not get the best possible benefit from the vaccine because your antibody levels will already be high.
However, if you are at high risk of severe disease if you do catch COVID-19 again, it’s recommended that you talk to your GP or other specialist for advice on timing of your next dose. It might be appropriate for you to receive your COVID-19 vaccine sooner than 3 months.

I got it the week I was due my booster, as did DH. I am at high risk and qualify for treatment.
The UK recommends you wait 28 days after having covid but the US says 3 months.
The general view seems to be that infection + previous vaccine gives you about 4 months protection.
I'm having my booster after 3 months on the basis that I probably won't get another booster for a year so want to maximise protection.

I am in the same situation. Day 4 of covid here. I am definitely going to get my booster as soon as I am able to because of the issue of waning immunity and I am more than pleased to be able to top it up! But I tend to be a 'take anything they will jab' type as it is. How are you and your DS doing now @TheCurseOfBoris ? DH and I have it, DCs not yet but I think DS2 might be succumbing as he is most unusually for him still asleep at the moment and was very tired yesterday.

cheeseybeans19 · 03/11/2022 07:01

I am also in the same situation, tested positive for the second time on Tuesday and was meant to have my 4th jab this Sunday. @OrangePumpkinLobelia How are you feeling? I haven’t felt too bad but last night I could NOT stop coughing so went to try and sleep sat up on the settee, managed to sleep a bit but still coughing. I don’t know if that’s from nasal secretions but it’s made my throat sore and I’ve just tried to gargle with salt water and ended up swallowing half of it 🤦‍♀️

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 03/11/2022 07:29

Hi @cheeseybeans19 hope you feel much better today. have the cough and sore throat here as well. Plus no smell at all.

I have been very lucky so far. Tiredness and terrible joint pain (Particularly in my hips and ankles) but mostly fine which I am grateful for. I have an autoimmune disease (and asthma) the autoimmune of which was diagnosed only a few months ago so I have some low-level anxiety about it all, but so far all is good.

cheeseybeans19 · 03/11/2022 08:27

@OrangePumpkinLobelia I lost my smell too but only for a day, very strange. I have an autoimmune disease too and was pretty anxious when I had covid back in January, but I was fine x This second bout seems more like a heavy cold really, but the coughs driving me mad! Have you found anything that helps yours?

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 03/11/2022 08:56

Oh that is good to hear @cheeseybeans19 about being mostly fine last time. Hope this soon passes. This is my first time with Covid, not sure how I managed to miss it until now tbh.

I have been taking a cough medicine for chesty coughs and that does seem to ease it. It's something I found in the back of the cupboard and has a BBE of 2017 but I was desperate!! DH has just burned his toast and although I can't properly smell that I can feel the burnt smoke taste in my throat as well.

I hope you are able to rest today without external stresses? I can wfh today so plan to do that on the sofa.

Thanks
TheCurseOfBoris · 03/11/2022 08:57

Thanks everyone. I think I'll wait the 3 mths before my booster jab. It makes sense that I now have some immunity from actually catching Covid again.
My DS went back to school today. l still can't smell and still feel like I have a cold, tired and weak, no cough though. I haven't tested again, it's day 9 atm. I last tested on Sunday and had a very feint line, compared to the mega bold line that came up straight away last Weds.

I'm usually a strong advocate for vaccination but I think I would wait too. The only thing I would say is that I think I saw some evidence that catching Omicron doesn't actually protect you from getting it again. I presume like the vaccine it might give you protection against serious illness etc.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 03/11/2022 09:03

Hope you soon feel 100% @TheCurseOfBoris

waiting 3 months sounds a good idea. I think I might do the same. @Mosik 's idea of staggering the booster out a bit because it will be a while until the 5th comes around really makes sense to me.
