Hi, I first started with symptoms a week ago and tested positive on the same day. I tested again two days ago as the guidance is 5 days (I think?) to stay at home and still very strong positive.

I know I don’t legally have to isolate but I’ve been staying at home, not going into shops etc. I have been walking the dog which I assume is ok, staying away from other people and pooches.

When am I ok to go back into shops or see my mum? Do I need to wait for a negative test?

Well legally you can go any time but I think it’s a pretty shitty thing to do.

My friends mum was taken to hospital with breathing difficulties due to Covid a couple of weeks ago and died 2 days later, despite being fully vaccinated. Would you be happy to risk your mum, or just strangers in a shop?

afaloren · 12/10/2022 15:06

No I’m not happy to risk anyone which is why I’m asking. Probably seems like a stupid question but the advice was confusing me.

I think 10 days to avoid vulnerable people but 5 otherwise

Jules912 · 12/10/2022 15:45

The old advice was 10 days or two negatives tests.

RainStalksMyWashing · 12/10/2022 16:36

Thanks for trying not to spread it OP. It is confusing as advice is crap if you want to avoid infecting people. If you're able to, wait for a negative test.

I'm confused too. I feel rough but am technically allowed out on Friday. I can't see me being well enough for a start. Ds could technically be in school. He has it too but is fine and could have gone back today according to the 3 days for kids rule. No way are we spreading it about. My mum is elderly and I'm her carer so this is really shit for us all. I'm going with the 10 days/ negative test before I see mum.

I’m glad it’s not just me getting confused! I would have thought a negative test is the best thing to wait for. I don’t want to infect anyone, especially my mum. She’s healthy but over 70.

Thank you. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm day six and still testing positive. Fortunately I can work from home and not spread it around.

Hellospring22 · 14/10/2022 11:14

In the same situation and now on day 9. I plan to wait until I have two negative tests and am no longer symptomatic. While testing positive on lft your viral load is high enough to spread it.

MaverickSnoopy · 14/10/2022 11:42

Legally you don't need to stay in. Public Health say 5 days (first day of symptoms is day 0).

I did a lot of research into transmissibility when my daughter had it as she tested positive for 15 days. From what I gathered, the more time that passes, the less transmissible you become (in most cases). I think that as the line gets lighter it's an indication of transmissibility but I don't recall 100%.
