I tested positive for covid on Thursday. On the same day my son had a temperature and sore head however tested negative. Friday morning he woke absolutely full of beans and has been absolutely fine since and still testing negative on lateral flow.

Does he go to school tomorrow?

Totally confused with it all now!!

I'd test him tomorrow and if he's clear send him in. I think it's three days isolating.

dementedpixie · 09/10/2022 09:06

If he's not had a positive test then he can go to school

If it was positive then 3 days isolation is recommended for children and 5 for adults BUT it's not mandatory. It would depend on the school's policy too

Im waiting to hear back from the principal about the school rules.
Am i to keep testing him though if he is fine? I don’t even have a big enough supply of tests to constantly test him and he is 5 and petrified of them so its a battle of tears everytime!

You' don't have to keep testing him,.

LadyApplejack · 09/10/2022 10:42

He's fine in himself, and has tested negative throughout. Why wouldn't you send him?

I didnt say I wasn’t going to send him I was asking what the guidance is now as it changes all the time and is totally confusing.
I don’t want to do something that others will be disagreeing with but I’m so over all this second guessing now. It needs to just be done with.

I think it pretty much is tbh there is no requirement to test even with symptoms anymore.

I think this is the problem there is no requirement anymore but then people will still absolutely roast you if you follow this guidance and don’t test 🤷‍♀️ You cant win lol

If your child hasn't tested positive, and in England, then he can go to school as normal. Only keep him off if he is too poorly for school, regardless of it being covid or not.

Close, contacts haven't needed to isolate for ages.

If he tests positive we advise 3 days off isolating, but we can't actually insist on it. We do advise it though, over the phone, as we have vulnerable members of staff. Having them go off sick for longer causes us more issues than a child missing a day or two at school.

We know that many parents aren't testing though anyway, so probably have covid positive children in all the time.

Jules912 · 09/10/2022 11:46

Send him if he's well. I had a similar issue with my DS being ill with the same symptoms 2 days before I tested positive. We tested him on the day he got ill, the day I tested positive and 2 days later when he was feeling better, all negative. At that point I figured if he did have it but the test wasn't picking it up, he was unlikely to be very infectious, especially as the recommended 3 days were up and he was feeling better.

pimlicoanna · 09/10/2022 11:53

The guidance has been to still send them in for a very long time now.

dementedpixie · 09/10/2022 11:54

If he hasn't got symptoms then stop testing him and send him to school

welshweasel · 09/10/2022 12:19

Our school have said no need to test kids, can send them in with coughs and colds if they feel well enough but to keep home if they have a high temp. Seems sensible enough. Here in Wales they stopped testing under 5s over a year ago so nursery have had the same rules since then.

GoldenHue · 09/10/2022 13:40

I only tested DS as he felt so ill and I felt that it was the right thing to do. He tested positive.

I hadn’t realised that following a positive test, his school policy was that he could return after day 5. Unfortunately he’s still feeling pretty rotten so doubtful he’ll return tomorrow.
