Finally got covid!

For 2 1/2 years we have somehow managed to avoid covid. Probably as we wfh and don't go out much. Now dd has started college. She finally caught it yesterday. I've been reading up on what to do and am confused. How long does she isolate for? We're all feeling a bit ill so probably all have it. I've found 3 remaining tests so will test later in the week to try to get a negative test. When do you think we should test after how many days?

Days 3-5 after symptoms start will usually give you a reliable positive (if it's Covid). The first couple of days you often test negative, even if it's obviously Covid. You don't have to isolate any more, but stay at home, take paracetamol, stay hydrated, all the usual stuff you'd do for a respiratory virus.

Abraxan · 17/09/2022 10:15

Technically she doesn't have to isolate at all under the current rules.

However common sense says that if she can stay home for a few days that is better for everyone else.

We didn't isolate from one another in the house when me and Dh have had it, at different times. We didn't spread it to one another or to Dd, despite this and despite me abd Dh sharing a bed throughout.

She tested yesterday and got a glaring positive. So I logged it with the nhs. When will she test negative I was thinking of testing after 5 days? She's feeling pretty poorly and wants to take next week off college.

I just had it for the first time and tested positive for about 7 days. It affects everyone different but surprised me with how wiped out I was, I thought I’d be back at work within a few days but it was 2 weeks off for me.

LIZS · 17/09/2022 10:26

You can test negative anything from a few days to many weeks. 5 days is suggested, 10 for contact with more vulnerable, but neither required.

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/09/2022 10:27

You don't need to test negative to release now - if you feel okay you can stop isolating after 5 days. I had it recently, but luckily wasn't much affected.

Boxshibe · 17/09/2022 19:52

Well we have now all tested positive and feel awful. Dd1 has been in bed all day and the rest of us are steadily feeling worse. Headachy sore throat coughing and aching everywhere. How long does it usually last?

Really depends OP - the weird thing about Covid is how it seems to affect different people so differently. I'd say about 3-5 days though, on average.

TolkiensFallow · 18/09/2022 09:47

The horribleness peaked for about 3 days but recover took a while…you should start to feel better soon.

Lemonyfuckit · 20/09/2022 08:37

I currently have it for the first time. Symptoms started last Sunday, felt really awful for about 5 days, still pretty poorly on days 6 and 7 and still testing positive on day 8, finally starting to feel Iike am on the mend perhaps today.

Boxshibe · 20/09/2022 09:01

Thanks for the responses. I'm still feeling very tired and achy though not as bad as Sunday. Going to try and do some work today but I'll see how it goes

I tested positive today too first time ever.
im CEV so I’m worried that it will be bad on me.
I am pretty much sure I got it from my child who just started Secondary two weeks ago.
It all started on Sunday morning when she came running into our bedroom crying that she feels like vomiting however this stopped few minutes later.
Then she said her whole body hurts and had a bit of headache and felt like fever.
I gave her Calpol and she started feeling much better, even asked for lunch.
During the day she got much better so we thought nothing of it.
However me- I noticed on Sunday Morning my thighs and bum were sore, like I would do some exercise, again I thought nothing of, though maybe I slept akward.
We were all fine but I still had my legs sore.
Today I felt much worse, like feeling I would vomit when on Schoolrun.
I just tested myself and it’s got positive in like 3 seconds and extremely dark strong line..
What now?
I read the nhs site but confused what to do. Can she go to school? And DH to work?
Do I need to stay in separate room?

If you are testing positive, please don't send children to school or go to work, stay at home and lessen the impact on others. What the government tell you now is irrelevant, it's about looking after other people. If I had a stomach bug I'd also avoid seeing other people.

This!

I am also a first timer. I started feeling bad on Sunday (unfortunately while travelling back from a trip abroad - apologies to those on the plane!) and tested positive on Monday morning (I didn't test when I got in on Sunday as I was too tired but with hindsight I'm sure it would have been positive if I had).

It's actually been relatively mild for me so far - I was very tired but had just put that down to overdoing it on the trip until I started to get a blocked nose too, but still thought it was just a cold at first. I've had a slightly tickly cough for a couple of days but definitely seem to be improving again now.

I don't intend to go anywhere before Friday but am WFH with no real energy issues. On Friday I'll retest and decide whether to stay in a little longer.

Boxshibe · 21/09/2022 12:05

Feeling much better today. Headache gone and can focus. The rest of the family are slowly getting better.

It's shit isn't it.

DuckEggBlend · 21/09/2022 16:25

Another first timer here. I'm on day 8 now, feel much better but just exhausted. My fever lasted 4 days, throat was really sore afterwards and now I'm just so tired. Worked today (WFH) and now in bed, the thought of making dinner tonight is far too much effort!

Hope you feel better soon, the horrible feverish symptoms feel like they won't end but they do!

properdoughnut · 21/09/2022 16:32

Take it easy, it can linger a while

Catsandcatsallover · 21/09/2022 16:38

I am home in separately bedroom now, daughter tested negative, have no symptoms, however she said everyone in her form is ill, like with really bad cough, sore throat etc, she said the boy she sits next too was coughing nonstop, literally threw up.
I won’t go out at all as I don’t work atm.
