Worst sore throat ever....

Tested positive on Sunday and have had a sore throat since then. Today it's on another level - like I've swallowed glass and no pain killers have made a dent in the throbbing pain. I've no idea what to do and am starting to climb the walls with the pain - just want it to be over 😢

(Before anyone suggests - Don't have any throat lozenges or anyone who can get them either)

Bless you, I had one like this once. Was agonising. Firstly, stop talking! Write everything down. The rest seemed to help mine. Have you tried regular solvable paracetamol? Steaming helped also. I put some carvol or whatever it’s called in the a water, if you could get some tomorrow. Honey and lemon of you have it in. Get well soon. X

Spudina · 07/09/2022 20:10

Also for pain, it’s good to have a constant level of analgesia in your system, so alternating paracetamols with ibuprofen might work so you always have something in your system.

Kam610 · 07/09/2022 20:17

Try gargling some dissolvable Paracetamol before swallowing it. Some warm drinks might also soothe it.

When I've had extreme sore throat from tonsillitis I've used chloroseptic throat spray. It numbs your throat but can only use for 3 days at a time.

Can you order stuff from the Amazon prime Morrisons site and they will come tomorrow? Or ask on fb if anyone local has anything ? I’ve taken painkillers round to a stranger in the village when he had covid.

Idontdoyoga · 07/09/2022 21:10

suck ice cubes & let the cold water drizzle down your throat.

Take paracetamol & ibuprofen together,
Gargle with warm salt water or TCP.

ImAvingOops · 07/09/2022 21:15

I found the combined aspirin/paracetamol worked well. Plus hot drinks.

catsnore · 07/09/2022 21:18

There is a numbing throat spray you can get from pharmacy - I had strep throat once, it was agony and this was the only thing that helped.

extrayoungling · 07/09/2022 22:28

Thanks all.
I've been doing all the paracetamol and ibuprofen I can take but it's not changed the pain at all (which is weird)
I've just tried gargling with saltwater and that has taken the edge off slightly so will continue with that.
I never knew this was the worst thing about covid.....

I had covid a month ago and the sore throat was the worst…. I gargled with warm salty water and dissolve-able aspirin. Also drank as much room temp water as I could as if I coughed I felt like my throat would rip apart and the water helped to damp down the urge to cough. It is bloody awful, you have my sympathy.

AdoraBell · 07/09/2022 22:46

I had that first around in February 2020. This was before tests were developed and before sore throat was accepted as a symptom of Covid so because I didn’t have a new cough or fever couldn’t confirm it was Covid.

Hope you feel better very soon.

That is exactly how I feel currently and also drinking pints and pints of water...how long did it last??

Oh you poor thing:( you can get antiseptic throat sprays from the pharmacy...I have a friend who can't use lozenges or cold and flu remedies and apparently the spray really helps.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/09/2022 23:06

I had Covid at the end of July and the sore throat was awful. I found drinking lots of hot tea helped and I also used lozenges and a throat spray. Lasted about two weeks and I'm still not fully over a month later ( tiredness and a slight sore throat comes back if I have a busy couple of days or a couple of nights out)

qwertyqw · 08/09/2022 02:56

The sore throat was literally another level, mine lasted a month. Even after i tested negative i went to the GP as I was SURE it must be infected but when the DR checked my throat it was all clear. She did say that it was a very common symptom. Just have to keep the throat moist by constantly sipping on something. It did end eventually! x

TiredyMcTired · 08/09/2022 12:24

@extrayoungling I had a really bad sore throat for about 3 days, it eased a bit after that but my voice and throat were affected for about 2 weeks. By that I mean that my voice was really croaky and I struggled to talk. Like another poster has said, if I get tired (another lovely post covid thing that happens a lot) then my throat can get a bit sore again. I also had congestion in my sinuses which still hasn’t really shifted and I lost my taste/smell about 3 days after testing positive. Still haven’t got it back 😢

How are you feeling today?

extrayoungling · 08/09/2022 13:01

@TiredyMcTired thank you, I'm much the same but doing hourly salt water gargles which is helping the pain. It's horrible. I'm day 4 today and really hoping that things start to get better soon.

Order some difflam spray on amazon prime. It really helped by numbing the pain

Bishpenny · 09/09/2022 17:36

Yes absolutely on another level sore throat! That was by far and away the worst symptom for me, my DH and DC. The only symptom that we remember from January bar a bit of achiness. We did as others have posted (Ibruprofen/paracetamol, loads of strepsils, colloidal silver throat spray, salt water) and just suffered it for a couple of days. Better in a few days. No lasting effects at all and we're all unvaccinated. Hope you feel better soon OP

WhizzFizz · 09/09/2022 17:59

It's bizarre how different experiences are.
I had covid last year and was very ill but no sore throat.
DH has it now, and hasn't had a sore throat he has a cough and other symptoms.
DSis has also got it and was telling me she had the worst sore throat of her life.

Cabinlife · 13/09/2022 10:39

Thought that I'd got through the pandemic without catching covid, but it was not to be. 3 days following our plane ride home from holiday, I felt fluey with a tickly throat. The throat irritation was mild at first, but following a constant cough for the first day, I can certainly say that my sore throat was the worst that I have ever experienced. Tested positive that day and really suffered. Whilst the throat pain was definitely the worst, had all the other publicised symptoms: Fever and chills, aching muscles and bones, headaches and persistent phlegmy cough.

Regarding the sore throat, it was unbearable, it was worst at night, when my throat was dry. I was so desperate for relief, I guzzled honey direct from the jar at midnight, which actually helped. From there, I dissolved some in warm (not hot) water and took Co-Codamol tablets, which helped take the edge off, but Nurofen also helped.

I researched the prevalence of an extreme sore throat with covid and found that most articles reported that about 30% of people suffered from a sore throat, most were under thirty years old, however a sore throat can be indicative of catching the virus from airborne particles, which definitely would match my situation, being trapped on a busy aircraft for 6 hours.

If you are suffering from this horrible sore throat, try to stay hydrated, get lots of rest in a room that neither hot nor dry, a shallow bowl of water or a humidifier beside your bed can help. Whilst not good for the waistline, honey or ice cream really helps for short term relief,
