what % still wearing masks?

(obviously talking UK here, where masks haven't been compulsory in months).

I live in a part of Scotland where mask compliance was very high. Whatever people's personal thoughts on masks and whether they were effective, people wore them because it was illegal not to. It was exceptionally unusual to see someone unmasked in the supermarket this time last year, even after England ditched the masks and we continued, compliance was 95% or more.

Have just been to the local small supermarket, there was about 10 customers in, 5 in masks. And a masked member of staff.

And before everyone piles in with "oh they might be clinically vulnerable" well yes they might, but masks are supposed to protect me from them, and pre March 2020 I never saw one single mask, ever. Except in a hospital.3

It depends on the mask, I have a severely impaired immune system and so I use a well fitted n98 euqivalent, so it does protect me no matter what other people do - isn't that what all the people who thought we should all roll over and die wanted us to do? Nothing to do with OCD

As with everything covid related those of us who are vulnerable are treated as dispensable idiots burdening society.

That ^^ I wear FFP2 to protect me, not other people now

GeorgeorRuth · 24/08/2022 13:05

Round here quite a few over 50s, presumably due to health conditions...and under 25s, drug runners/ dealers..🙄 hiding faces without it being questionable

Butteryflakycrust83 · 24/08/2022 13:13

I wear them to all medical and hospital appointments - GP this is enforced but hospital isn't.
I pop one on if there are vulnerable looking people on the bus wearing them.
I will go back to wearing one on the train during cold and flu season.

Singleandproud · 24/08/2022 13:17

I rarely see a mask now unless in health care settings, however I wonder how much that is to do with the season. I would certainly wear a mask now if I had a cold now that I have them whereas I wouldn't have even thought to do so before covid, it seems the sensible thing to do so I think mask wearing may increase again in the autumn once the various normal viruses start making the rounds again.

Phrenologistsfinger · 24/08/2022 13:21

We are wearing masks in the supermarket still as we are doing back to back rounds of (private) IVF due to age and if you catch it, they cancel the cycle. This would cost us thousands. Studies show COVID has a detrimental impact on egg & sperm quality meaning a 3 month delay for everything to recover (time we don’t have). I am also on immune suppressants as part of my fertility treatment more at risk of getting ill.

All the judgey people on here might want to consider that everyone has different life stuff going on and accept people may just have a reason why masks are helpful to them. It doesn’t affect you, so why do you even care?!

I don't wear mine either, I think we still have a box of the disposable ones squirrelled away but never used.

I am surprised how many people round here still wear their masks, are they ever going to stop?

Maybe they will maybe they won't. If it makes them feel more comfortable then people like you should really just mind your own business.

I don't wear a mask unless visiting hospital etc but if I see someone in a mask at the shop I don't think twice about it because I really don't care what they do with their life..

squashyhat · 24/08/2022 12:20

Wow. Could you be any more offensive?

My pharmacy and GP surgery are still asking me to wear a mask. So I do. And I also do so in supermarkets, in airports and on planes.

It's called choice and being responsible.

No, I agree with the previous poster, it’s quite sad that people are still living in fear and allowing it to affect their lives like this. It’s like seeing someone using wipes before using a playground swing.

somethinggotmestarted · 24/08/2022 13:44

Still see loads on the tube.

PeloAddict · 24/08/2022 13:45

@StillGoingStrongToday so if you're on chemo and need to go into a busy chemist, you wouldn't wear a mask? It's not fear, it's protecting yourself

justasking111 · 24/08/2022 13:49

Friday I had to schlep 30 miles for a covid test so my hospital would admit me on Monday for an operation. Turned up Monday for operation I'm a rare bird wearing a mask. Test back yesterday for a check-up I'm the only one in a mask in waiting Room. Over the weekend all restrictions lifted I discovered.

It's confusing

5zeds · 24/08/2022 13:53

I assume the wearer has a cough/cold and is being kind, or they have a weak immune system. Either way I give them more space and think very little of it.

APurpleSquirrel · 24/08/2022 13:55

I'm in the SW & still see a few people wearing them in supermarkets or round town - mostly older people though.
I've only worn them to medical appointments recently.
Did roll my eyes at the lady I saw in Sainsburys wearing hers just on her mouth, I mean come on, if you're going to wear one... otherwise what's the point?

womaninatightspot · 24/08/2022 13:57

I’m in Scotland and it’s rare to see a mask. The gp and chemist were still asking for them but that has gone at the chemist. I haven’t binned them in case they come back in the winter. Hoping not though.

megletthesecond · 24/08/2022 14:00

Just me a lot of the time. Some older people too. But I haven't got covid yet so maybe it's given me that marginal gain.
Masks don't bother me. I was running in one when the parks were busy at the start of the pandemic.

StillGoingStrongToday · 24/08/2022 14:00

PeloAddict · 24/08/2022 13:45

@StillGoingStrongToday so if you're on chemo and need to go into a busy chemist, you wouldn't wear a mask? It's not fear, it's protecting yourself

If I was immune suppressed then I’d get someone else to go to the chemist for me, so you may as well move on to the next implausible reason that couples are wearing masks in Aldi.

megletthesecond · 24/08/2022 14:03

I'm not living in fear. I just don't have anyone to look after my younger teen if I get ill. I'm the most annoyingly healthy person there is, a decade of lone parenting does that to you.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/08/2022 14:06

Yes if in GP surgery, pharmacy or on public transport/ at stations/airport etc.

Don't bother in local shops anymore if the staff aren't wearing them. But still always have a spare one in my handbag just in case.

FlorianImogen · 24/08/2022 14:10

I still wear one in shops

PeloAddict · 24/08/2022 14:13

@StillGoingStrongToday doesn't work
I'm immunocompromised for life. Live alone
I can't not go anywhere for the rest of my life so I choose to wear a mask and I HAVE to go some places like doctors, hospital appointments etc
Better than not going out

Northernsoullover · 24/08/2022 14:16

I recently wore one on my way to Spain. I know its not 100% or anywhere near that but after 3 years without a holiday I was in no way risking covid ruining it if there was the off chance it might protect me.
I hope no one felt sorry for me 'living in fear' because it would have been a waste of their time. I stopped wearing it the second I arrived at my hotel (except on buses as its still a requirement) and didn't bother on the way home because now I've had my holiday I'll take my chances.

DeedIDo · 24/08/2022 14:18

One of my customers still wears a mask at all times, but she's cut a hole in it so she can drink beer through a straw!

I'm unsure what protection that gives her.

LoveMeForARaisin · 24/08/2022 14:19

I have a friend who still wears a mask. No particular health-related reason other than she’s still inexplicably obsessed with covid and rages that other people are not. She still tests daily too.

LoveMeForARaisin · 24/08/2022 14:21

I have an opticians appointment next week and they said on the phone I’d need to wear a mask. I have no idea where any of masks even are now. I’ll need to dig one out.

Hugasauras · 24/08/2022 14:22

I'm in Scotland and everyone wore a mask here during the height of Covid but it's quite unusual to see someone in one now. Occasionally in the supermarket but that's about it, except obviously in medical settings as they are still asked for there.

Hugasauras · 24/08/2022 14:22

(By here I mean where I live, not speaking for the whole of Scotland!)
