My DH is on day 5 (possibly day 6) of Covid and his cough seems to be getting worse. I was hoping he would be starting to turn a corner by now.
On what day did you all start turning a corner with your Covid symptoms?

I was sick for 3 weeks negative for one and couldn't move for about 10 days pains all over my body

pinkchampagne1 · 11/08/2022 10:24

Oh that sounds awful, shoebag! 🙁

The first 3 days were very bad for me (especially with the muscle aches). I started to feel gradually better from day 4 onwards.

My DH took much longer to recover than me, but I normally bounce back quicker when we both have colds so this wasn't a shock. It's been about 6 weeks now and to be honest he still isn't 100%.

pinkchampagne1 · 11/08/2022 10:28

Goodness, your poor DH!
My DH tends to pick up more bugs than me and suffer more with colds etc. He works permanent night shifts which may affect his immune system

I was getting better from day four onwards both times I have had covid.

DeborahVance · 11/08/2022 18:06

Was covid free and felt fine after a week but had massive relapse and am still exhausted three weeks on

pinkchampagne1 · 11/08/2022 18:48

Oh dear, that’s not good. 🙁
DH has a very feint line today but isn’t feeling much better. He seems to be coughing more if anything.

They say that days 5-7 are the most important as people tend to feel slightly better or begin the feel even worse. For me the first 4-5 days were the worst after which I felt a bit better each day. But it's two weeks tomorrow and I've been totally exhausted!!

applegrumbles · 11/08/2022 19:34

i felt better after 4-5 days but the cough got worse for quite a while before it got better.

soupmaker · 11/08/2022 20:13

I was properly ill for 7 days. Cough started on day 8 and continued for a week. Had terrible fatigue for another 2 weeks. Took 10 days to test negative after my first positive.

pinkchampagne1 · 11/08/2022 20:33

applegrumbles, interesting that you found the cough got worse after a few days too. DH is definitely coughing a lot more now but the body aches, shivers, nausea etc has calmed down. He was at his most poorly on that first night.

soupmaker, sounds like you had a really rough time of it. 🙁

Day 6 now and he is still coughing loads and feeling rough. When is this going to end?! 😩

This is very interesting, as I’m currently on day 6 (I think)…. or possibly 7.

Wednesday - first suggestion of feeling a bit tired, but wondered if I was being paranoid (had heard the previous day that someone I’d been with for several hours the day before that had tested positive)

Thursday - coughing a bit, nothing too worrying. Tested - negative.

Friday - coughing quite a bit. Felt tired. Took temperature - high. Tested - negative. Forced myself to cook, couldn’t eat much. Started taking paracetamol. DH insistent that since two tests were negative, it’s not Covid.

Saturday - fairly busy morning then went on to a social event in the afternoon. Felt crap, wished I wasn’t there. Got home. Took temp - very high. Slept off and on all evening

Sunday - cough much worse, sneezing and runny nose, headache, high temp, snoozing on sofa in the afternoon, feel crap, looking at watch from 7.30pm onwards wondering if it’s too early to go to bed. Ate little.

Monday - woke early, really congested and sore throat from sleeping with mouth open. Got up to take paracetamol and decongestant…. and test. Positive! DH was surprised when I told him and even more surprised when his own test was positive. Curiously - feel a bit better, less tired, more appetite. Ate a full meal in the evening, first in about 5 days.

Tuesday - didn’t feel need for paracetamol or decongestant today. Felt a bit tired late morning, but no actual snoozing. Was able to concentrate on reading and jigsaw rather than just inane TV. Am about to cook real food from basic ingredients. But, curiously, the cough is worse!

Just hoping that progress will be smooth from here, as it was first time (Jan 2021, pre vaccine). Then I got worse for 4 days, held steady for 10, and then steadily improves over 2-3 weeks before getting back to full energy.

PuzzledObserver · 16/08/2022 18:48

@pinkchampagne1 sorry, just realised I’ve been a bit rude piling in 3 days after your last update when your DH has been quite unwell. How is he doing?

pinkchampagne1 · 17/08/2022 08:20

PuzzledObserver, you don’t need to apologise. Pleased you are feeling a bit better. Hope you are still recovering well.

My DH is still coughing a lot and feeling fatigued. Yesterday was the first time he has got through the day without cold & flu tablets every 4 hours. He had an upset stomach on Monday evening so thought he would give his stomach a rest from all the drugs. Thank goodness I seem to have avoided it so far. 🤞

Hope everyone else is ok

I'm on day 11
Yesterday I had to come home from my first day back at work (did 2 hours!) and slept for 3 hours in the afternoon
My legs throb with tiredness.
My heart rate goes up to 101 just going up the stairs!
It's awful
For context bmi 19.5, regular gym goer, no ultra processed food at all other than mayonnaise. It hasn't helped much as far as I can see 😂

Yorkshirepuddingwithsyrupnotgravy · 17/08/2022 08:50

Day 5. Still got a cough, no taste or smell either

PuzzledObserver · 17/08/2022 09:36

@pinkchampagne1 still fatigued and coughing a lot is normal, I’m afraid - but do you see any sign of improvement? That day without cold & flu tablets - did he cope OK without them?

@WithIcePlease with you on the heart rate shooting up with minimal exertion - I noticed that over the weekend, not even stairs, just getting up and walking to the loo had my HR at 90-100. Mind you, my BMI is 40, but even so, that wouldn’t normally happen!

Have you agreed a phased return to work? If not, you probably need to. This thing is a bugger!

@Yorkshirepuddingwithsyrupnotgravy can you say more about taste and smell, please? Can you literally not taste or smell anything? Last time my taste and smell were unaffected. This time, taste seems to be muted. Things don’t taste different, but it’s as if everything is a milder version of itself iykwim.

pinkchampagne1 · 17/08/2022 11:24

PuzzledObserver, yes he seemed to cope okay yesterday and hasn’t had the tablets today either so a definite improvement. He was at his worse the first 3 or 4 days I would say.
Luckily (or unluckily) he has been on 2 weeks holiday so hasn’t had to worry about work.

OP posts:
WithIcePlease · 17/08/2022 12:21

@PuzzledObserver I've done another 2 hours today and now back in bed. I'm not back at work now until Tuesday thank goodness. Plus DC out of the country so I can rest
I'm day 12 now

PuzzledObserver · 17/08/2022 12:23

@pinkchampagne1 oh, what a pain to lose his holiday to sickness! Will he be able to convert it to sick leave and take his holiday at another time? I suppose it depends on his sick pay arrangements whether that’s to his advantage, though.

My DH used to work in a care home. Early on in the pandemic, he told his employer that he had been in the same building (not even the same room) as someone who had subsequently tested positive. His employer wouldn’t allow him to come to work for 2 weeks - and all he got was SSP. He didn’t have Covid at that point.

Later, when he did catch Covid (from work - they were in outbreak) it was at the start of a week’s annual leave. He then had a further two weeks off sick - for which he was paid full salary. I guess by that point his employer had decided that as well as protecting their residents, they also had to look after their staff.

PuzzledObserver · 17/08/2022 12:28

@WithIcePlease good that you can rest now. We have done a bit of housework today, but that’s it - feet up, going to take it easy the rest of the day.

I am retired, so don’t need to think about work - just how many social/leisure/volunteering activities I will do or not do once I start venturing out.

We are supposed to be going to a cricket match with friends on Friday. Even supposing that we test negative by then, I’m not sure that an hour’s drive, a bus ride, walk to the ground, six hours watching cricket and then journey home will be a good idea.
