What are the chances of other members of my family avoiding covid and us still making the holiday?

I know, that no-one on the internet can know the answer. I realise that.
I suppose im after a bit of hope.

Things to note-
We’ve just spent 6 hours in a car together!! 😬 and on Friday, another six hours!
My DD was sick yesterday and feeling unwell, temp, sore throat so in my mind it’s fairly likely she is going to test positive in the next coupleof days.

I'm not sure how much this helps but we've had Covid in the family 5 times now and never passed it to one another. Lots of open windows and cleaning might work!

HeyMicky · 31/07/2022 22:33

DH and I both tested negative on day 5 and the DDs didn't catch it

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 31/07/2022 22:34

I think you need to start licking them right now to ensure you all get it asap (only kind of joking!), if they get it soon very good chance you'll all be recovered in time I would think.

@Benjaminsniddlegrass I have considered this! Breathing heavily if not actual licking!!

stop bloody testing and go on holiday

kids are told specifically not to be tested unless told my doctor

follow the advice and stop worrying

we are supposed to live with virus not test for it

live means stay in if unwell otherwise go about as normal

the only person who can stop you going away is you

pinklavenders · 01/08/2022 08:28

Yes, so if you feel unwell you're unlikely to enjoy a holiday....

WhatsInAMolatovMocktail · 01/08/2022 08:36

My dd had Covid and it was just a sore throat and feeling tired for 24 hours. I only found out about it by accident (I was planning to give a lift to a friend who was about to go on holiday and really didn’t want to catch it, so I tested dd just in case and to my astonishment it was Covid, I’d never have guessed otherwise). I kept her off school for two days hours as she had a four hour gym event at the weekend she didn’t want to miss, and I didn’t want to spread it around her class with everyone planning holidays.

my dh caught Covid off my dd and was barely unwell at all. I didn’t catch it, nor did my son despite us making no attempt whatsoever to stay isolated (figured we may as well get it over with before summer).

I know it is not really going to ease your anxiety to know that “we were fine” but it really is very common in families where parents are vaccinated to have only the mildest infection nowadays, so mild you really wouldn’t think to test for it. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

YesitsJacqueline · 01/08/2022 08:40

Just don't test
The blind faith that people are putting into these pieces of plastic that are only 67% accurate is ludicrous.
5 years ago if you came down with a cold 2 weeks before your holiday , would it cause this OTT reaction? No . The difference is we've given that cold a name.

pinklavenders · 01/08/2022 08:48

That's not been my experience unfortunately. I got Covid 4 weeks ago, so probably Omicron, and felt pretty ill for a few days. Thankfully it was just after a holiday so I could rest and recover at home.

ApplesandBunions · 01/08/2022 09:16

What are you worried about, testing positive on the 13th or being too ill to go?

Rainraingoaway21 · 01/08/2022 09:22

Are you flying OP? Do they test temperature at the airport or anything?

Delatron · 01/08/2022 11:07

It’s highly unlikely you’ll all be too ill to go on holiday 2 weeks from now. Stop testing.

Treat it like any other illness. If one of you had come down with a cold or stomach bug today would you be panicking about a holiday 2 weeks away?

I was positive for 2 days (only tested as I work in close proximity to older people). DS2 I think caught it from me but had a minor sniffle, threw up once and then was fine after a day. Nobody else seemed ill in the family.

Unless you have a requirement to test treat as you would any other illness. If you’re well enough to travel then go.

Quite a few people know including myself have had covid recently and felt unwell with it ,I felt grim for about 3 or 4 days ,whilst I certainly wasn't ill enough to need any medical care I certainly felt it

x2boys · 01/08/2022 12:06

And I have had three vaccinations

minipie · 01/08/2022 12:06

Are you going somewhere that requires a negative test?

Tobermory · 01/08/2022 13:40

Sorry, I posted and ran.
feeling pretty terrible today certainly more than just a cold, wouldn’t want to be away and feeling like this. So I suppose my concerns are other family members being too unwell to fly . Or getting being unwell when away. But whoever said it was spot on, I wouldn’t have worried about this BC (before Covid) so need to try and put it into perspective.

But thankyou for sensible advice, and crossed fingers!!

DH had it back in March and I never had a positive test, although I had a banging headache for a week... so you might be lucky.

The 'just carry on and pretend Covid doesn't exist' is all very well when that's what's been decided in the U.K., but the same rules may not apply wherever your going. In France for example, 'test, alert, protect' is still very much the rule and you are supposed to isolate if you have it. Even in countries where there is no obligation, there is more sense of social responsibility than there is in the U.K..

At work, staff who have tested positive have been all been strongly, strongly encouraged to
follow guidance and isolate for
5 days. People are still watchful. This certainly colours my view, for how I/we deal with a positive test.

New variant/s are pretty contagious. Spread round my house and a couple of friends recently when they’ve escaped catching and spreading it through the house before. I do know someone that didn’t catch it from her husband recently though.

However you’ve time on your side. I tested negative on day 12, I was much better after day3/4. Just took it easy and rested which helped my quicker recovery. As even tho this government have decided we are defo not contagious after 5 days the NHS seems to disagree and wants a negative for us to go back.

Mindymomo · 01/08/2022 15:03

When we all had covid we couldn’t have gone anywhere. My 2 adult sons recovered well over 4/5 days, but were extremely fatigued for about 2 weeks. My DH and I took about 3 weeks to begin feeling normal.

LondonWolf · 01/08/2022 15:20

Negative day 6 for us. Dd positive first, ds and I the next day. Six days later she was negative, the following day ds and I. So all three of us six days. I think you'll be fine.

pinklavenders · 01/08/2022 15:40

I think the issue is how bad you feel. Personally I felt pretty ill for a few days and would have not enjoyed our holiday (not to mention the wasted money...)

Sofedupofitall · 01/08/2022 17:38

It’s spread around our house very quickly but fairly mildly and we’ve had to miss our holiday too. Unfortunately we needed a negative test. Just tiredness in our house with a small fairly insignificant cough.
