My son has been home since Tuesday because they have shut the class apparently its spread around that class and its more of a staffing issue. I didn't think they would or could do that now.

He's still testing negative

The school I work at was close to shutting a few weeks ago due to staffing levels.

Most of those who are catching Covid feel awful with it. For some of them this is their 2nd/3rd time catching it and is the worse they’ve felt with it.

Sal for Sally

Thanks! I thought it sounded like a name but wondered if it was a funky internet abbreviation passing me by! Good luck Sally!

ThickCutSteakChips · 07/07/2022 17:29

Are people actually paying for tests now, or are they using the freebies that they still had in the cupboard? No way am I paying for an LFT, if I am really ill I'll stay off work, if I feel OK I will be going in.

itsgettingweird · 07/07/2022 17:31

Schools have always shut for illness outbreaks.

Usually it's norovirus in winter and they also feel clean.

Sometimes you just have to because you can't safely staff the school.

MoonKnight · 07/07/2022 17:31

The rules are different for special schools - in wales at least - and has been throughout. my sons school has closed for each positive case (there’s 5 staff to 6 children so not that many times)

Georgeskitchen · 07/07/2022 17:11

I hope your fining the school. Like parents who get fined for not sending their kids to school

Fining was the government’s bright idea, not the school.

lorisparkle · 07/07/2022 17:43

We are really struggling for staff in our special school as both teachers and students are quite poorly with Covid. In our school it is not safe to run classes without sufficient staff and we can not join two classes together for safety reasons.

Favouritefruits · 07/07/2022 17:43

My sons whole school shut a few months back because of Norovirus, they can’t physically open if there’s no enough staff it doesn’t matter if it’s COVID or flu.

HashtagShitShop · 07/07/2022 17:48

A friend of mine is on day 5, already had long covid and is still suffering and exhausted physically and mentally as well as cold symptoms. She is also testing positive still - not just a faint line but very strong obvious line that comes up within seconds of applying the sample.

Shes not the only one I've heard it lasting much longer in too. If you're ill, you're ill. They could have CEV children or those with CEV family members too within the school as well as their own family.

Oh my god it’s sounds like we are in 2020/21 again 😢

No it doesn't. This is probably a rare case and OP has posted for attention to make it look like its happening all over when it is not!

Lougle · 07/07/2022 17:50

DD1 (16) left special school last week. Covid has run through the school (I think she has had it but hasn't tested positive despite symptoms). They have had to shut a year group each day this week, despite the year 11s not being in, which creates a void of 40 pupils, and many students not being in due to Covid. The staff are too ill to come to work and they have to have the ratios for safety.

whenwillthemadnessend · 07/07/2022 17:52

This new bout seems to be laying people out for at least a week so I imagine they are too ill to work.

Trolltrotters · 07/07/2022 17:54

I am kinda see their point. It nearly the end of term and no one wants to ruin teachers' hard earned summer holiday.

(Not a teacher btw)

We have covid here. We've had it before and not really noticed, but this version has kicked the teeth out of us. If closing means some way to contain it, I think it's a good thing, especially in potentially vulnerable kids and families

GlitterSparkley · 07/07/2022 17:54

Half my team are off with covid atm. They are all bedridden and very poorly. They couldn’t come to work if they wanted to.

DD (9) has just tested positive too, so home again. She is poorly this time too, whereas last time it was a mild cold - this time its much worse. Apparently they are dropping like flies at her school.

chiffchaffchiff · 07/07/2022 17:57

I work at a uni and we've had lots of Covid cases lately. Far more than at the height of the pandemic. It's really knocked a lot of students and academics for six. Thankfully nobody hospitalised but like a very heavy cold or flu. Not the sort you can just soldier through with a box of tissues.

megletthesecond · 07/07/2022 17:57

How do you suggest people too ill to work actually teach pupils?
Everyone I know who is getting covid (I'm 48) is in reasonable health, fully jabbed and still really poorly for about 4 days. This is what our government expect us to deal with.

Winter will be worse unless they sort out boosters.

Also, pro tip: only commoners say 'pardon', and we don't want to be perceived as one of those now do we?

starlingdahling · 07/07/2022 18:01

Isaidnoalready · 07/07/2022 17:12

Where in the country are you? We don't have any covid cases here that we know of

Really??

Our hospital is over run again. 3 wards closed and turned in to covid wards and other less sick patients being kept on open wards in side rooms. Also talking of stepping down elective work again etc.

QuebecBagnet · 07/07/2022 18:02

If they haven’t got enough staff then they have no choice. It’s a safety and safeguarding issue.

Theimpossiblegirl · 07/07/2022 18:03

I'm a covid positive teacher but am expected in as I'm not particularly unwell. Children are expected in if positive unless unwell and I have several in my class this week. It's really shit, I feel like a leper. I don't want to be passing it on.

I did get a need to improve attendance phone call a few weeks ago and that was after having about 3 days off in one term. He's had four days this week alone. He attends a special school so I could have insisted on him still being in but they would have just stuck him in another class and he probably wouldn't have liked it. Hopefully the class will open on Monday and stay open till the end of term.

Sal

Is transport affected too?
My son goes to a special school and he's had to stay home s few times because transport was affected .

Where on earth are you located? I just looked at there are 11421 cases in my area which is up 3116 from last week.

OxanaVorontsova · 07/07/2022 18:05

Teacher here, tested positive for the first time this week, feel dreadful, no way could I go and teach. If there’s no staff what else do you expect the school do? This is the government’s living with Covid plan, with nothing done to limit the spread in schools or elsewhere.

SnowyLamb · 07/07/2022 18:06

We've got loads of staff off currently with covid. It's not that they're isolating, if they were positive but well they wouldn't have tested they'd be in school, but staff are being really poorly. I had it a couple of weeks ago and was barely able to get out of bed for 4 days, not fit for work for 8.

They haven't really closed because of "covid" but because they have so many staff off ill they can't operate safely. This would happen with any illnessn but most aren't as contagious so you don't usually get so many staff out at once.
