Family have Covid, I have symptoms but testing negative

Is it possible to test negative on LFT but still have Covid?
We have been away for the weekend, staying all together in a caravan, travelling in our car around the area, there and back etc (5 hour journey back).
Dd had a little cough Sunday night but on Monday when we were travelling back she felt quite rough, white as a sheet, goosebumps, ached all over and had a headache. When we got home I did a LfT and she tested negative.
Yesterday, she was a bit brighter but I did another LfT and this time it was positive, she has continued to feel better and now just has a bit of a cough.
Last night, DH and I went to bed ok but felt rough all night. We were both very achy (especially lower back), hot then cold, exhausted but could not sleep, skin felt almost like sunburnt, nauseous, headachy and generally felt shitty. I had a temperature of 38.1 on and off all afternoon.
We both stayed in bed today until the afternoon, feel a bit better but still off.
I did a LfT this morning and was negative.
Just done another and still negative yet Dd and dh are both positive (which came up almost instantly).
I can’t understand how I have the same symptoms as dh and Dd and felt so rough yet am not testing positive.
Just worried the worst is still to come!
I am also worried as 17 yr old ds doesn’t want to stay at home and potentially catch it for the third time so he’s gone to stay with his mate, his parents are aware that we have Covid in the house and are happy to have him, I’m concerned he may be harbouring it and pass it on to them!

Yes you probably have it but it really doesn't matter at this point. Stop testing and stressing, just wait till you all feel better and the resume life as normal

OnceBitten25 · 29/06/2022 22:28

I've got Covid now and was symptomatic for a couple of days before a positive LFT

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/06/2022 22:36

Me too, a few months ago. Had the same symptoms as everyone else (they were all positive) but tested negative for several weeks (tests were still free and I tested every day).
I’m certain I had Covid too 🤷‍♀️
I’ve a really robust immune system, at 59 have had 3 days sick leave in my life and just don’t get colds/viruses etc.
Something wiped me out for a few weeks earlier this year, though, negative tests notwithstanding.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 29/06/2022 22:52

Yes. It is very possible. It happened to me. If in doubt, gat a PCR but in terms of isolating etc, just assume you have Covid if you are symptomatic.

PompomDahlia · 30/06/2022 01:48

I was coming here to make the same post. I’m really confused after getting a negative PCR today on day 8 of feeling crap (I’ve had 4 negative lft in the last week as well!). DH and 2 friends I spent time with last week are all positive. I’ve been the most sick out of all of them - sinus issues, fatigue, cough, gastric effects, fever, crazy dreams…. But still negative. Any ideas?

CakesOfVersailles · 30/06/2022 01:51

I thought it was well known that these tests often have false negatives! My neighbour has covid at the moment, she tested negative for four days (with a cough and fever) before finally testing positive.

supersonicspider · 30/06/2022 06:42

Yes of course it's possible to have covid and test negative! User error and all that.

tobi21 · 30/06/2022 07:51

it took me 4 days to test positive even though DP had covid and I had all the same symptoms

Jules912 · 30/06/2022 08:39

You'll probably test positive today (swab your throat too if you aren't already). I got a negative PCR (back when you could still get them) on my first day of symptoms but knew it was wrong as had an awful cough and DH and DS both had it so did another LFT when I got the result next day and got a very faint positive.

PompomDahlia · 30/06/2022 09:39

Well, just had another negative lateral flow. I went and got a PCR done yesterday by someone else so surely that can’t all be user error.

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 30/06/2022 11:18

Thanks all, it’s strange how some of us still test negative. Dh came up positive within seconds but even though I feel worse today it’s still negative!
I am on annual leave this week (typical that I would come down with this then!!).
I am a PA for a disabled lady and I am also a registered carer for my mum who has Alzheimer’s so I really don’t want to go spreading this around as they are both vulnerable. If I still feel crappy but negative Monday I’ll will have to go get a PCR.

PompomDahlia so the PCR has come back negative too? That’s weird isn’t it.

@RedorangeyellowBLACK Sorry, didn’t explain that well (my head is like cotton wool) but PCR was also negative as well as all the lateral flows.

from reading, there’s a suggestion that it’s because the infection isn’t strong in the upper respiratory tract (though not sure how that tallies with my very strong sinus symptoms). Today I feel achey and exhausted as well as the sinus issues. It’s not like any other illness I’ve had before

Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2022 11:45

I was really poorly over Christmas. Tired, high temp and the worst tonsilitis I have ever had, took me a couple of weeks to recover. DD was a bit ill but not too bad and DH and DS were fine. I tested neg for covid several times so thought it might just be another virus but DH had a dentist appt and they asked him to test so he did and was positive, we then tested the DC and they were positive too.

I feel your pain. I feel exactly the same today. Just weird and crappy. Thought I was feeling better last night but crap again today.

hoppinggreen it certainly is a very strange virus. I can’t believe how quickly dd has bounced back from it but dh and I are like zombies.

Where can you get PCR tests from these days? Hope you are all recovering nowx

AppleHa · 02/07/2022 13:41

DH had Covid a few weeks ago. I had the exact same cough, but tested negative all the way through. Maybe the cough was something else which we both had, as well as him having Covid or maybe I had it but wasn’t testing positive, who knows.

PompomDahlia · 02/07/2022 15:29

@Kcc73 I paid to go and get a symptomatic test in a centre.

Still testing negative at home on the lft. My sinuses are starting to feel better but I’m still exhausted and needing to take breaks after doing small jobs in the house
