Any positive stories of someone very vulnerable with lung condition catching covid

My mum who's in her late 60s and has severe asthma and other lung conditions has covid. 😥She's very poorly with high temperature and really sore throat. She also has a cough that is different from her usual cough. It's also been more than 6 months since her last booster.

So worried for her, she's been so careful for the past two years and we have no idea how she caught it, presumably from supermarket or when visiting her doc.

Any positive stories or experiences? Did you or someone you know end up being hospitalised with it under similar circumstances?

My MIL has had it twice. She is aged 70s, paralysed down her left side and has problems with her lungs. (You would have to ask DH for specifics).

First time she was in hospital 24 hours just so she could have oxygen. Second time she was home and fine.

My mum is 77 with asthma and COPD. She had Covid last month.

She was quite unwell but not seriously and didn't end up in hospital.

Try not to worry.💐

Friend of mine had lung cancer and they (fuck knows how!) removed healthy parts of his lung, not the cancerous part, so then had to go back in and remove more. He has to have extra oxygen daily as this has caused further problems. He, thankfully, had a bit of a snuffle and nothing more when he had Covid.

My uncle has severe Asthma and in his 60s, he had COVID a couple weeks ago. We were worried and it didn’t really amount to anything more than a mild illness!

i think this variant is so much weaker than it was a couple years ago, I’ve had it twice and I don’t have an immune system due to several health issues and I was fine!

My stepdad was a miner so his chest is done in , he had covid in March and recovered fine . I hope your mum's recovery is swift .

Thank you, so comforting to read these. I also think it's omicron that she has which is a good thing as it's milder, just can't help but worry because of all her lung issues (she actually had tuberculosis as a child and her lungs are still scarred from that). Just hope she gets through this without getting very ill.

I have asthma and bronchiectasis. I was pretty ill with covid (delta) and spent time in hospital but fully recovered after about 10 weeks.

EatYourFive · 30/05/2022 19:50

Thanks for sharing your experience @TheRoadToRuin. Sorry to hear you were so poorly but glad it got better eventually. Quite worried for my mum, she went to doctor's today and got prescribed some anti-inflammatory meds. She's quite poorly with very high fever and other symptoms.

DP has asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis. He had Covid twice, once quite badly but he was fine. No hospitalization required. Can your mum not get the new Covid antiviral pills or is it too late for that? Also get an oximeter to monitor her oxygen levels.

Friend of mine has severe asthma - the kind that having a cold with can land you in hospital. She caught covid before the vaccines were out and we were so worried. But she got through. It was a long recovery but it wasn't her lungs that were the issue, it was a rare complication that had nothing to do with her asthma. Another colleague got it, again severely asthmatic, and it wasn't too bad for him either.

Wishing you and your DM strength and hope for a strong recovery. My DM has it, she's in her 70s, and it's such a worry isn't it?

StarDolphins · 30/05/2022 22:32

My 77 Yo Mum had it at Easter. She has COPD is all but bedbound after strokes/heart bypass. Dr came out as she was lying in bed looking grey/coughing & weak & said she needs to go to hospital- my Mum refused & got over it slowly in 2 weeks.

BordoisAgain · 31/05/2022 08:34

My mum as COPD and had covid a couple of months back and was fine.

Ironically she is now in hospital with pneumonia caused by a cold 🙄

EatYourFive · 31/05/2022 11:09

Thanks everyone. Thankfully the anti-inflammatories seem to have brought down her temperature (it was persistently over 39) so that's something at least.
Sorry to hear your mum also has it @ColourMeExhausted, hope she feels better soon. It is such a worry. My DM has been so careful for the past two years because of her health issues and has hardly seen any people for much of it, but guess it's almost impossible to evade it forever. Just hoping she'll be ok.
Hope your mum also makes a quick recovery @BordoisAgain!

My two DC have severe asthma and one has underdeveloped cartilage in lungs, both caught covid last summer (not omnicom variant, previous more severe variant) having shielded for a year. Covid didn’t trigger anything in their lungs, but did give them huge temps and one had a galloping heart rate, but no lung issues.

the worst of it Lasted 48 hours, then recovery. They amazed me!
