Anyone had muscle twitching after Covid?!

greenbananas29 · 23/05/2022 12:35

I had Covid at the beginning of April and was asymptomatic.
A few weeks later and I started to experience muscle twitching in my right thigh, I could feel it and when I looked down you could see it's rippling and moving.
Over the next few days I felt it in my calf's, thighs, buttocks, eyelid, arms and neck.
It's not bothering me, but I'm super aware of it now so I'm looking for every twitch and feeling them when it happens.
Its felt every day though out the day in and off in various different places popping up and twitching.
I've had routine bloods done and they can back fine so no deficiencies there.
I stupidly googled and now worried myself silly it's something sinister like Motor Neurone Disease and I have bad health anxiety so that isn't helping.
I just wondered if anyone else has experienced muscle twitching after Covid? And if they've got a professional opinion what did they say about it?
I'm considering paying privately for a Neurologist at £300 just for a consultation (my health anxiety is swaying me) but part of me thinks I should sit it out and see how it goes?
It's just unsettling keep feeling these flickers everywhere 🥺

Yes, i had this with my first bout of Covid in March 2020, I had long covid for 18 months and muscle twitching was part of it for about 6-8 months (obviously not major compared to the other things i had). It's gone now and I didn't get it with Covid reinfection earlier this year. I took magnesium supplements which i do think helped a bit. I am pretty sure it is nerve inflammation. But as I say it's passed now for me thankfully.

I never had any tests by the way on my brain / nerves. It was when nobody really believed / knew the damage Covid could do in those that didn't die from the initial acute bit. I would hold off a bit if you can do as in my experience the tests rarely show things and many things long covid related appear to be related to to systemic inflammation.

I had covid two weeks ago and one of my legs has been twitching like mad a few times on and off since. Just one though but enough for me to notice.

I'd not connected the two to be honest as I usually ignore such twitches!

Wondering if you have been to see a neurologist and got an answer?
I do have the same reaction after covid. I had this virus 4 times now, and after each time I an going through the same reaction. The same as you, I had some blood tests which didn't give a lot of answers, got a referral to see a neurologist,but...its a year now and I still haven't received an appointment.
Or may be you did something that has help you to get rid of it?
Thanks in advance

Hi! Yes I did end up seeing the a neurologist privately as it was just taking over my life worrying about it 24/7. He did some clinical tests in his office had me walk and hop and strength tests like pushing against his hand etc. Then he watched the twitches, and asked me a lot of questions.
He was 99.9% sure it wasn't MND from about 5 minutes into the consultation, but said that because if my healthy anxiety he knew that, that may not have been enough for me just hearing that as you always think 'yes but what if? How can you be sure?'
So we scheduled an EMG test which cost me another £350 😳 But it was well worth it as the Neurologist did the nerve tests on all of my twitching muscles and told me there and then everything was perfectly normal and it was not MND.
If I can say anything about my experience is please try not to worry, now I know that's easier said than done but I literally wasted 4 months of my life worrying myself sick, not enjoying daily things with my family as I was too busy worrying.
I did SO much research and looking for answers online from forums to different sites and it's a really common side effect of Covid and one of the best ways I saw it explained was 'The virus affects every part of your body including the neurological system, and it causes your nerves to behave 'hyper excitable' resulting in twitching muscles. It's your nerves reacting to the virus remnants that are still in your body'
And although everyone including my neurologist told me that anxiety and worrying will 100% make the twitching worse, of course I didn't listen, but the funny thing is once I had that clear EMG test I stopped worrying and focusing on the twitching muscles and started to forget about them and I hardly even notice them now.
Good luck!

Reading this thread has reassured me. I've also had all the same symptoms post-covid. My GP was worried but the consultant said not to worry. She thought it was very possible that Covid is the cause, and added that the implications of C19 are not understood and won't be (if ever) for a long while.
I read a great piece on the internet which emphasised that muscle twitching doesn't matter unless there are other symptoms - notable muscle weakness - and that the odds are strongly stacked in your favour.
A year on, I am still twitching but I guess I've just got used to it now.

itsgettingweird · 19/12/2022 19:33

Yes I did.

My ds actually has a neuro muscular condition that's a cousin to MND and so I was really worried I was showing symptoms of it.

Like the previous poster this was after the March 2020 strain and it slowly disappeared over a year.

Hello, hope you are doing good.

Could you plese tell me how you are doing now ? I am feeling the same twitches after getting covid, they began in the same week I tested positive and I did not hve ny other symptom. I feel a little bit weaker, but I reckon it is due the infection. I went to a nuero docto who told me my strengh and reflexes are good and I do not need an EMG. I really appreciate your feedbck since they re pretty much the same case as mine.

I really appreciate.

Many thanks !

I have something called benign fasciculation syndrome where the muscles in my calves twitch and flicker constantly. I've had it since I was a teenager and now late 40s. It definitely gets worse if I am anxious or stressed or ill. Like a lot of these things it only gets better when you manage to stop thinking about it!

BodgerSparkins · 16/10/2023 11:52

I had this after a flu like virus, years before covid. Hypothesis was that whatever the virus was it had 'irritated my peripheral nervous system', it calmed down after a while and eventually went. Thinking about it certainly made it worse / more noticeable. Oddly someone in my office, who had what we assume was the same virus, or at least had the same symptoms at around the same time, had the same thing - and commented on my arm by the photocopier as they could see the muscle jumping about.

They're called fasticulations, these kinds of twitches - like if a fly lands on the side of an animal, they twitch - that kind of twitch.

Certainly don't jump to worrying about anything sinister. Go to the GP and do the exercises, they have a series of tests they can do which are very good at ascertaining whether something is worrisome or not. I can only say that I've had it, people I know have had it, and worrying about it definitely makes you more twitchy ;) so go and see the GP again. Ask them to explain what each test demonstrates - there is an important distinction between types of twitches, whether they happen at rest or when you're reaching for something etc. which they can explain to you if you ask. If you can, ask the receptionist which GP it's best you speak to as often they have special areas of interest.

Howardzzz · 21/10/2023 19:45

Hello. Don't feel alarmed by your muscle twitching. More than two years on, I am still twitching - for no obvious reason ! The consultant says they see these symptoms regularly/constantly but can't explain it. My own twitching comes and goes, but hasn't got any worse. The BIG RED FLAG is muscle weakness - which then causes the twitching. If you have muscle weakness, or any indication of it, then that is not so good. But if you want peace of mind (as I did) then of course get an opinion. Do post again on this site if you want to share any concerns x

Lena84 · 22/10/2023 08:11

Hi.
I am fine now, forgot about the twitching 🤣
Although they re appear (I have noticed) after a viral infection. I still think its because of c19. I am trying to take magnesium with potassium and feels like it's working.
Also, done some mri and no sign of something nasty

Try not to worry 😊

Crikeyalmighty · 30/10/2023 19:32

Guys for anyone who gets this I had an awful lot of it post covid last year-.twitching, awful pins and needles , internal vibrations , awful headaches at back of head and I did get weakness on right side- I was convinced it was curtains for me orMS at best , (I'm 61) but at around the 8 month point it started to fadeaway - I now get the odd bit of pins and needles , weirdly sore eyes/hot eyeballs at points but the twitches are barely there at a year. The neuro told me that those who get long covid tend to get either neuro issues or breathing /heart type issues. Around 8 months seems to be the sweet spot for many where symptoms decline. I found what helped me was gluten free, low sugar and much lower carb, high quality multi vits, magnesium spray , vit D spray and omega fish oil and lots of deep breathing , stretching and lots of water every day

Hello @greenbananas29 you don’t seem active on the forum anymore. Please can you let me know what happened with the twitches eventually?

Hi! User name change!
The twitches slowly disappeared over time, I did end up paying for a private nerve test as I was so worried about it and my health anxiety got the better of me.
All was fine and as soon as I knew that the twitches got less and less and then now I get them on and off I don't even notice them!

Metalmckie · 08/10/2024 23:21

This happened to me. I was twitching everywhere and the more I thought about it the more it happened. I was convinced it was mnd. My doctor however is very sensible chap and realised that my twitches don't roll like mnd, and that I have been under a lot of stress. Ultimately this whole very real and scary 5 weeks have been due to a nervous twitch, where one led to another which led to more. Basically get checked out by your gp, but also don't jump to the worst conclusion and mate yourself worse like I did. Good luck all.

anon199900 · 13/10/2024 21:44

I twitched after all of my covid jabs and after Covid. Lasted about 3 months each time.

Metalmckie · 06/11/2024 13:49

FYI, I had an EMG today and got the all clear. Still twitching but at least I now know its nothing to worry about as the doctor said.

Schoolrunmum81 · 01/12/2024 03:17

Can I ask if your twitches were just in one particular place or all over? Around 6 weeks ago I started with a twitch in my thigh which is now also in my calf and the arch of my foot. I then randomly get them in my arms, torso, palms and at times I feel like my face is twitching but not as noticeable as everywhere else

I have been under a lot of stress for over 12 months now and I'm low on vitamin D, for which I'm taking otc supplements. I've been backwards and forwards to GP so much in the last year with no cause found for other issues, I'm really worried to go back over this one. I realise lying awake at 3am is no good either as lack of sleep won't be helping !

Notcookie · 01/12/2024 16:11

Mine are usually in my calves but when I'm stressed they can be anywhere in the body. I often have an eye twitch for weeks and get them in random places like under my arm, middle of my back or stomach! Highly likely to be stress.
