DD has Covid, due to fly to the States

My DD10 has Covid, she’s been poorly and I did an LFT which was positive. I’m due to fly to the States on Tuesday and have a supervised LFT booked for Monday - what are the chances it’ll be ok? I’m fucked aren’t I?

I've just had covid ... no one else in the family got it ... had to test other family members due to activities and seeing vulnerable people. Might be OK.

Chewbecca · 12/05/2022 15:18

Have you had it before? How recently?

TangointhePark · 12/05/2022 15:21

I had it in September last year - we all got it then - fully vaccinated so hoping that helps me avoid it.

Not necessarily fucked I'd say. I had it recently and my DH didn't catch it, we didn't change out normal routine or keep away from each other.
Same thing at Christmas, DD who was staying with us had it and we didn't catch it then.
It'll be the luck of the draw.

Trinacham · 12/05/2022 15:56

All the families I know who've had a member with covid, nobody else has caught it - that's including my husband when I shared a bed with him. Not to say it's impossible, but certainly not certain you'll get it, no.

rainbowandglitter · 12/05/2022 15:57

I caught it from my 12 yo a couple of weeks ago but DH hasn't caught it from me. We carried on sleeping in the same bed etc and he's unvaccinated and still never caught it. It's bizarre.

Chewbecca · 12/05/2022 20:18

Hmm, I had it in April and gave it to my son who previously had it in September last year but my DH who previously had it in January avoided it.

good luck!

Frazzled2207 · 12/05/2022 20:20

When my ds2 got it I did not

when my ds1 for it, I did, but not for 12 days and tbh it was more likely from a work event (half of them subsequently got ill) than from him.

I flew to the states using an unsupervised test…….

Which test did you use? We are going there to get married next month and I am so paranoid about the whole testing thing.

that one

Jellycatspyjamas · 12/05/2022 21:20

How did you do that @Geordie01 everything I’ve read says it needs to be supervised. To be honest if I test positive I’d not travel - I couldn’t square it with myself sitting on a 10 hour flight knowing I was infectious so I’ll just keep testing daily so I’m prepared for possible disappointment, isolate as far as possible and hope it passes me by.

Howmanysleepsnow · 12/05/2022 21:28

She may be negative by then… DS was negative on day 5, Dd on day 4.

Genegenieee · 12/05/2022 21:29

I had a mega dose of Covid recently and neither DH or 2 DC (teens) got it. I sat in a small hot box of a meeting room the day before I got it and nobody I was with got it either so, 🤞🏻fir your trip - keep hope!

Howmanysleepsnow · 12/05/2022 21:34

Just saw you were asking your chances not hers… Well, LFTS pick up 53% of cases, so if you catch it there’s a 47% chance of a negative LFT anyway. Plus there’s the chance you won’t catch it.
DH has had it twice, all 4DC had it once each. I haven’t had it despite sharing a bed with DH before each positive (whilst symptomatic) and hugging/ kissing all 4 dc.
of the 6 cases in our household only 2 were caught from one another. Which means out of 30 opportunities for transmission, it was only passed on twice, giving you an anecdotal 1 in 15 chance of catching it based on our sample of 6!

Throwawaytoday · 12/05/2022 21:36

Last August DD had covid (probably Delta at that point) - DH and I didn't catch it (single jabbed at the time), despite the face she was a face-breathing 4yo.

This March DH and I had covid (probably Omicron) - despite being triple jabbed, but DD didn't catch it...

All is not (necessarily) lost.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2022 21:39

Both my DDs had it the week before last but DP and I didn’t get it.

User3568975431146 · 12/05/2022 21:46

How is your daughter?

It's such a worry when children are ill, it definitely focuses the priorities, nothing else matters except them getting well again.

Lovemusic33 · 12/05/2022 21:51

I caught it off my dd a few weeks ago despite having it last September, my other dd didn’t catch it though, she did stay in her room out of the way as we were due to go away, like you I was worried she would come down with it and we would have to cancel are trip, luckily dd2 and I were clear after 10 days.

TangointhePark · 12/05/2022 21:58

Thanks for the stats @Howmanysleepsnow hopefully I’ll avoid it.

@User3568975431146 My DD has been very poorly today but her temperature broke this afternoon and she seems to be bouncing back well. You’re so right, while I would be disappointed not to go my bigger concern is that she’s ok. She was so unwell this morning I was concerned hence the test, but I’m hoping she’s through the worst of it.

I've just returned from the US and we had an in person airport LFT and certified recovery certificate and nobody checked either of them. The only thing we had to do was the US attestation which does not require any link to either the test or the recovery cert.

Pineapplepine · 13/05/2022 09:01

Geordie01 · 12/05/2022 21:06

Thank you

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 13/05/2022 10:50

Just a heads up that the CDC state the test must be supervised one day prior to travel.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 13/05/2022 10:59

@Geordie01 I’m intrigued how you did that as even on the link you posted it says supervised for the US. I’ve flown into the US several times this year (I live here) and haven’t been able to check in until I’d proved a supervised test. If there’s a way round it, I’d love to know!

VeganVampire · 13/05/2022 10:59

Geordie01 · 12/05/2022 21:06

How did you do that? Your link states

Some countries, such the United States of America, require rapid antigen lateral flow tests to be video supervised online.

Did you tell them that you were flying somewhere else other than the USA? We had to input flight times/destination and the test was supervised online.

However, one of the tests was supervised poorly and it would have been possible to switch swabs or not to dip the swab in to the solution. The other three were very closely monitored and everything had to be done clearly on camera.
