Covid vaccine in pregnancy

Whathefisgoingon · 04/05/2022 11:16

Considering trying for baby number 2 at some point soon, however the fear of covid + pregnancy still looms over me.

I am triple vaccinated and have also had covid.

I’m curious to know if the covid vaccine is given as routine in pregnancy now, like flu and whooping cough? What is the general advice like if you’re already tripled jabbed? I had my last dose November 2021 so obviously they will have worn off by the time I’m pregnant, especially third trimester...

Anyone pregnant and know?

I'm not pregnant but am a vaccinator. Extra jabs are not routinely being given to pregnant women unless they fall into one of the other categories (immunocompromised).

Noix · 04/05/2022 18:00

I had two boosters (4x vax in total) during pregnancy as my GP was sensible enough to write me a letter justifying that I am well immunocompromised because pregnant and will otherwise go into labour/hospital with little protection left. It's possible.

Whathefisgoingon · 04/05/2022 20:54

So you’re telling me that they’ve told us all that covid in pregnancy is extremely dangerous, yet we will have to fight for a vaccine?

@Noix can I ask, are you immunocompromised otherwise or are you saying pregnancy was the sole reason your GP did that?

I'm 26 weeks, never had any vaccines and wouldn't want any either, pregnant or not. Was asked briefly about the vaccine by midwife around 12 weeks. I said I wasn't comfortable introducing something unknown into my body during pregnancy and I didn't believe the risk outweighed any supposed benefit. She said that was fair enough and understandable and left me alone after that.

No, I'm perfectly healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, 36yo. I was lucky because both GP and midwife agreed it was outrageous to not give me another booster to protect me and baby when most vulnerable. Good luck getting it sorted!

Purplerain1144 · 04/05/2022 21:37

I am pregnant and work in NHS and I don't get any more than 3 vaccines x

2isontheway · 04/05/2022 21:46

I'm also pregnant and work in the NHS...I'm surprised they didn't extend the spring booster! I have also just had covid too and thankfully had fairly manageable symptoms.

Whathefisgoingon · 04/05/2022 21:52

@Noix glad you got it! Was that in the third trimester? Apparently that is the “riskiest” time.

So they lied about you being immunocompromised because you were pregnant?

That does not make sense at all !
There is currently no evidence that a pregnant woman needs a 4th jab

BreadAndWater · 04/05/2022 21:57

@Noix 👆

Whathefisgoingon · 04/05/2022 22:06

@BreadAndWater there is evidence that boosters start to wane significantly after around 4-6 weeks, there is also evidence to show pregnancy makes you vulnerable to severe covid outcomes, so how does it not make sense to you?

Makes perfect sense to me. GP can make the call anyway, but they shouldn’t have to lie as it should be available for anyone who wants it!

After 4 to 6 weeks the protection against catching covid starts to reduce but not the protection against being seriously ill.

Whathefisgoingon · 04/05/2022 22:11

@Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas I haven’t seen anything confirming that to be the case in pregnancy.

I wouldn’t want to take the risk! I’d rather have a booster during pregnancy and pass on some protection to the baby too.

BreadAndWater · 04/05/2022 22:23

@Whathefisgoingon
But medical professionals are lying for someone to have the jab, thats the point!

WHO has not found any ‘evidence’ that pregnancy requires a FOURTH jab at the moment
This is my point

And the booster ‘3rd’ jab lasts more than 4/6 weeks

SweetMeadow · 04/05/2022 22:32

I think your immune system is weaker during pregnancy. I was very run down in my third trimester and picked up so many infections, one after the other and then caught covid (I was triple vaccinated). I wasn’t as sick with covid as I had been with an earlier viral infection which knocked me out for weeks.

My midwife did recommended that I start taking Florodix vitamin tablets and put me on a weeks bed rest! It made such a difference and I felt so much stronger going into the final stages of pregnancy. I honestly think resting as much as you can and upping your vitamins and doing other things to boost your immune system is a really good idea in your third trimester, to help give your body the best chance to fight off any infections and get your body ready for labour and the (potentially draining) early days with a newborn.

Are you going to go into the reason why this is, or are you being deliberately enigmatic?

Robinni · 07/05/2022 15:33

@Whathefisgoingon you will still have some immunity, B cells/T cells. For now pregnant are now being asked to come forward for booster, but this could change

Robinni · 07/05/2022 15:38

@BreadAndWater pregnancy makes you immunocompromised…. This is how the baby is able to grow within your body. The immune system downregulates so that the baby isn’t attacked. Then there is all the pressure on respiratory system in third trimester. I was surprised they didn’t extend booster too, @Noix thank you for info!

if you have had covid + vacc this is shown to give heightened protection anyway.

MassiveSalad22 · 07/05/2022 15:42

I had my second vax during my 2WW, and my booster at some point during pregnancy, and then had covid at 35 weeks. That was bloody bad enough, I dread to think what it would have been like without being vaxxed. If you’re offered it in pregnancy I’d take it!

BreadAndWater · 07/05/2022 17:29

@Robinni
Being pregnant does NOT make you immunocompromised
More likely to pick things up yes, weaker immune system yes, but not actually immunocompromised!

Being pregnant does NOT make you immunocompromised
More likely to pick things up yes, weaker immune system yes, but not actually immunocompromised per sae in the realms of medication / steroids

Otherwise ALL CEV would of been offered a 4th jab and they wasnt because you have to actually be immunocompromised through medications / steroids / Anti rejection meds etc

At the end of the day the world health organisation has not felt it is necessary to include pregnant women in the immunocompromised category of needing a 4th jab

Robinni · 07/05/2022 18:02

@BreadAndWater fine it does not induce immunosuppression in the classic sense but widespread immune modulation increasing susceptibility to disease. Are you happier with that definition?

As said before if further booster required then pregnant women will be amongst first to be called. For now people should just be cautious.

BreadAndWater · 07/05/2022 20:55

Thats the point though isnt it

There isnt a 4th jab for the majority of the population at the moment, including pregnant women
