Anyone else feel liberated after recovering from covid?

firstly, I just want to say, this is not meant to be a smug post – sorry for anybody really struggling with long Covid/CEV etc.

However I got covid for the first time and I’ve only recently recovered -luckily suffered just with cold symptoms. However I’m shocked by quite how I feel now i’ve had it – it’s almost a sense of elation and liberation!
Yes, I know that I’ve been lucky and that I could also catch it again. But I don’t think I realised quite how much latent anxiety I’d stored away over the last two years, and now I’ve come out the other side I just feel massively relieved.

I am relieved that I haven't had it yet. Omicron being milder doesn't stress me. I think when alpha was around I was nervous because no jabs. Now I just be normal and if I get it, I get it. No anxiety or stress.

I felt the same when my vulnerable DS got it and sailed through it. I have spent the past 2 years in a state of great anxiety about him getting it as he has multiple immune issues and asthma. I feel so much better and in about 6 weeks he can get his first jab (after the suggested gap between infection and jab) which will make me feel that way too.

Friend is going thru this. Nothing I said for 2 years would assure her that she was low risk. She demanded LFTs when someone visited her, wouldn't go to busy places, wouldn't see anyone she thought had over-exposed themselves too recently, expressed fury at end of free LFTs. Now she's finally had it (tested positive on hoarded LFTs ,now doubt), and was very minor symptoms, she's itching to get out & socialise & live life again. <shrug>

@umpkj - yes, I was relieved that I hadn't had it, and I believed that I was fairly chilled about the prospect of getting it. I was socialising normally, not wearing a mask until required etc, however I think I've now realised that perhaps there was still an underlying niggling uncertainty in the background which I wasn't aware of:

  • what if I got it and it wasn't mild and I ended up getting long covid

  • I was always thinking 'if I catch it at this event, then next week it will affect xyz' e.g. holidays/ travel etc

I can't describe it really, but now I just feel mightily relieved - thank god that's over with, I've recovered, I seem to be OK, it hasn't caused any major problems/ cancellations etc

Same here. CEV, shielding since Feb 2020 and I had it 2-3 weeks ago with few symptoms. So relieved I was okay and got lucky. Glad you're okay too!

LeftFootForward · 03/05/2022 19:07

Yes, I feel the same as you OP and from what I've heard from friends so do most people who catch it.

Motherofcats007 · 03/05/2022 19:14

I’m CEV and had covid fairly badly (hospitalised and then had pulmonary embolism), now that I’ve recovered three months on, I’m pleased to have it over and done with.

TulipsGarden · 03/05/2022 19:19

Yes, I am relieved and feel happier being in busy enclosed spaces now. However, don't assume you won't get it again - someone I know had it quite badly then got it again five weeks later. The second infection was milder but she still felt rough.

I'll be happier if and when my parents get through it. They're basically still shielding and I can't see them every going back to normal.

picklespark · 04/05/2022 23:01

Not particularly, given that you can get it multiple times and with Omicron and its variants, at worst you might only have a few weeks of immunity. I don’t particularly want to get it repeatedly, given that your chances of long covid and other long term effects increase if you get it again.

whatnumber · 04/05/2022 23:40

We feel so relieved for our parents who are older and vulnerable and have now recovered from it, hopefully no long term effects.

Zippidy123 · 06/05/2022 18:16

Yes I feel the same. I'm CEV and have spent 2 years with it hanging over me, scared to really go anywhere or do anything. I had caught it 3 weeks ago. needed 2 weeks off work but have pretty much bounced back this week. We've had a big florida holiday on hold since all this started and I was terrible of getting really poorly abroad. This has given me the confidence to travel again. It wasn't pleasant but it was manageable.

boonducks · 07/05/2022 13:45

I felt exactly the same. I had a very bad dose of covid last year and was hospitalised. But I survived and made a full recovery. The feeling of liberation was magical.
However that has worn off to a large extent as I had Delta which gives little protection against Omicron and I really don't want to go through that again.

Frazzled2207 · 07/05/2022 13:48

Yes just had a negative test this morning after having it and feel I can conquer the world now

RadioRouge · 07/05/2022 14:24

I felt like that the first time.
