90 year old Nana tested positive today

She's nearly 91 and has become really frail over this past year. She has emphysema and has recently had a stroke.
Does anyone have any recent experience with elderly friends/relatives dealing with omicron? The health board spoke to my mum this morning and initially said she'd be eligible for antivirals but when mum phoned back, they said that they had got it wrong and she's not eligible after all. The woman on the phone went as far to say that she believes the antivirals don't do much anyway!
Is there anything I should be making sure mum is doing? Mum is 67, also positive and lives with my Nana. I don't live nearby so feeling pretty helpless.

Thanks in advance.

If your mum doesnt have an oximeter then she should get one pretty damn quick and use it to check your gran's blood o2 a couple of times a day. As she has emphysema you may need GP advice on what a good or worrying reading might be.

babysleephelp · 15/04/2022 22:07

My 93year old grandad had it recently and said it felt like a cold. No other more serious symptoms than that.

He has had a stroke but doesn't have emphysema or any other lung condition to our knowledge.

Your nan is lucky to have someone who loves her and will look out for her. I hope she doesn't feel too unwell and recovers quickly

HesGotHisTrombole · 15/04/2022 22:15

My 101 year old Nan had it recently, no symptoms. Is now perfectly fine. My 94 year old aunt the same.

Gary24 · 15/04/2022 22:38

My 94 year old gran had it about 6 weeks ago. Barely even registered to be honest. She was being tested as close contact in her nursing home otherwise I don't think we'd have known, so try not to panic. Possibly order an oximeter for reassurance and if you are concerned (or your mum is) call 111. Hope she feels better soon

FruHagen · 15/04/2022 22:42

My 84 year old Mother who has had a stroke and is bed bound had it recently and recovered.

Herecomethedaffodils · 15/04/2022 22:52

I can relate to how worried you feel. My parents in their 80's had it recently and it scared me when they first tested positive. No underlying health conditions. Cold like symptoms and fatigued but otherwise not really unwell. Like a PP said, the main thing is to check blood o2 levels regularly, rest, eat well and keep hydrated. Wishing her well.

I don’t have any advice on the actual covid front that hasn’t already been given, but on the feeling helpless front, could you order them some groceries from Tesco- soup, nice bread, a few ready meals, vitamins, tissues, paracetamol etc?
Hope they’re better v soon Flowers

Thanks for all the reassuring stories of your relatives.
It's quite nerve wracking when it the virus catches the vulnerable in your life. I wasn't that worried when my 17yr old DD or my 9yr old DS caught it. But my sister who's just recovered from cancer and has sarcoidosis had covid a week or so ago, and now my mum and nana yesterday and today - I'm a nervous wreck!

Thanks for the suggestions on getting them an oximeter. Despite having one myself, I hadn't thought about getting them one! 🤦🏽‍♀️ I've ordered one on Amazon to go straight to mum's house.
I wish I could drop everything and head down to look after them, but I'm self employed and living hand to mouth at the moment - I just can't afford to cancel work.

That's a really sweet suggestion! Mum says she's well stocked for food and medication. She's a vitamin and supplement fiend too! But I might get them both a "hug package" each. Some chocolates and spa treats. X

My neighbour is 89 and has emphysema. She tested positive a couple of months ago, had a rough few days but has bounced back with no lasting effects. Fingers crossed its the same for your nana.

TizerorFizz · 15/04/2022 23:26

My 97 year old mum caught it in hospital. It was like a mild cold. No lasting effects but she reasoned tired for a couple of weeks. Ok now.

echt · 15/04/2022 23:35

Friends of mine in the UK's mid-80s mum got a loan of an oximeter from her GP when she got Covid. Worth a try.

Itsbackagain · 15/04/2022 23:35

83 year old mum so a bit younger but has heart disease and various other ailments had it a cpl weeks ago. Two very rough days then a cold - all good!

Choux · 16/04/2022 01:19

My parents live in Extra Care housing and there was an outbreak a few weeks ago. 13 residents tested positive including my parents who are 81 and 89 and dad has heart failure and were 25 weeks post booster so about to be boosted again.

Only one of the 13 had symptoms and although reasonably unwell did not need hospitalisation.

But my friend who is also triple jabbed has been wiped out for two weeks with it.

elliejjtiny · 16/04/2022 01:33

94 year-old grandad had it a few weeks ago. Took 5 weeks to get over the last few symptoms but he is fine now.

Myfanwy81 · 16/04/2022 02:01

My Dad caught COVID in December and passed away 4th January this year. Am still in shock, he was 70. It's a horrible, unpredictable virus. Best of luck to your Nana, keep an eye on her oxygen levels and makesure she takes plenty of vitamins and fluid. Vitamin D. C and Zinc. Try and keep her out of hospital if you can, am convinced my Dad would have survived if he hadn't been admitted. With your love and care am sure she will be ok xxxxx

Poppetlove · 16/04/2022 02:27

Why wasn’t she “eligible” for treatment or antiviral tablets?

SquirrelG · 16/04/2022 02:37

My DF just told me about a 105 year old woman he knows who had covid and is fine now. Hopefully your Nana and Mum will soon be over it.

babysleephelp · 18/04/2022 12:19

@Boofay how is your nana doing?

Oh bless you! ❤️

She's ok, thank you. Very tired and a little achy but other than that she's been relatively free of symptoms.
My mum on the other hand has really been suffering. She's had nearly every single symptom going. She's day six today and still has a very strong positive on a lft.

I bought them an oximeter which arrived yesterday and mum hasn't stopped testing her and Nana since! 😂

My grandad is 86, in a care home with dementia. He tested positive last Sunday. He’s lost smell and taste, had no appetite and slept more than usual (but also been confined to his room so nothing else to do). He’s testing negative today and has had breakfast and lunch and much chirpier. My nanna is 84 and has dialysis and she tested positive yesterday. She’s ok up to now - cough and runny nose! I dropped an oximetre off this morning but she’s ok atm. She’s eligible for anti virals so hopefully get them soon.

They’ve both caught it from my Aunty who is half their age and suffered much more than them.
