On holiday and DH thinks he has covid

Dh has had a stinking cold since we have been on our UK holiday this week. We didn't bring any tests with us. Can we still get one in the chemist ? Is there any point?🤔

I saw them for sale in Tesco yesterday.
£2.00 per test.

PotteringAlong · 13/04/2022 08:35

There’s no restrictions and no requirement to test. Behave as you would if he had a heavy cold and crack on

VanCleefArpels · 13/04/2022 08:37

What would you have done 2 years ago in the same situation? Do that.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 13/04/2022 08:40

If you care about other people you can but tests v cheaply over the counter and then isolate until 2 negative tests in a row, as per the guidance.

If not then crack on, although my DH has Covid and has been far too ill to crack on so you may find he can’t anyway

The above applies to England, other countries have different rules still

Totally agree
Crunchymum · 13/04/2022 08:59

What do you have planned for the rest of the holiday? As long as you aren't doing loads of indoor activities you should be okay?

Or can you get some tests? Boots and Super drug sell them?

SpringHasSprungYay · 13/04/2022 17:49

He's just full of snot.
And coughing.
He feels well enough to go for walks, sit on the beach.
We are mostly outside.

You can't buy them very cheaply if you want to keep testing until you get a negative! I didn't realise the boxes only contain 5 tests, unlike the ones you could order before.

MossyBottom · 13/04/2022 18:40

It's not a cold though. Two years ago if you gave someone else a cold they would just get a cold.

Covid is different in that it makes some people very seriously ill.
So no, don't crack on.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/04/2022 18:44

But he might have a cold @MossyBottom, there are other illnesses out there apart from Covid.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 13/04/2022 18:46

Do they have shops where you are? If you want to take a test go and buy one, no need to consult with the internet Grin

Nelliephant1 · 13/04/2022 18:47

You can get tests. If he tests positive you just return home and isolate.

There are plenty of people for whom a cold would make them very ill, you just didn't get told about it.

🙄 OP is trying to be constructive. Testing would ensure he isolates. If it’s just a cold, no point wasting holiday and a cold wouldn’t have the potential serious consequences if passed on.

I’ve had a cold & irritating cough on holiday this week. I’ve got no tests & I refuse to pay for them. I’ve just carried on doing as I would with a cold.. we’ve done 95% outdoor activities anyway. It’s a long awaited holiday, I’ve had covid twice & I’m triple vaxxed 🤷🏼‍♀️

MossyBottom · 13/04/2022 22:12

@hellcatspangle
Not so much.
I'm immunosuppressed. A cold might be a bit worse for me but covid had me in hospital and made me ill for 3 months. Not the same.

whywhythough · 13/04/2022 22:48

@PotteringAlong

There’s no restrictions and no requirement to test.

It depends on where in the UK they are.

Attitudes like this bother me. I'm CEV and going on my first holiday in three years next week - and I'm sure I'll be surrounded by people like you. I live in a country where we have always had to buy our LFTs, and we don't appear to have a compliance issue with them. People test when they need to, don't complain about it and don't refuse to pay for them. BTW - it isn't a cold in any way and shouldn't be treated as such.

TulipsGarden · 14/04/2022 07:31

If you want to be sensible and responsible, and you can afford it, buy a test and check whether it's Covid. Covid is not a cold, it's a more serious illness. If we had tests for flu or noro I'm sure people would use them, it would be useful to know wouldn't it?

If it is Covid just avoid him doing indoor activities (and perhaps the rest of you too, as you're probably incubating it).

TulipsGarden · 14/04/2022 07:33

Oh and in most countries you've always had to pay for LFTs. So for anyone who 'refuses to pay' - think how lucky you've been up till now 🙄

ReacherMargrave · 14/04/2022 07:35

If your outside and can limit your partner going inside shops etc then carry on as you are. Covid is going no where and unfortunately we just need to get on with it and people need to realise this. Enjoy your holiday OP.

Ffs for some people a cold is not "just a cold" A cold nearly killed my son and has hospitalised several of my children multiple times. The real difference is that the fact that a common cold can be extremely serious to a group of people (many of which are the same group who are at most risk from covid), wasn't splashed all over the media.
