I can go to work with covid now, but I shouldn't go anywhere else?

Hi,

I tested positive on Tuesday. Felt really poorly Tuesday and Weds, much brighter Thursday. My school now say we can teach if we feel well enough, so I was teaching Friday. Have now broken up for Easter break, and strong positive tests stil but feel fine. My instinct is to stay inside until that changes to prevent infecting anyone else. DH thinks I should go on an afternoon out with him and DC as I was at school yday- what's the difference etc. I don't feel comfortable, and nor did I feel comfortable yesterday teaching but that is the schools policy now. It all seems so strange doesn't it?

I’d have taken yesterday off sick too, to potentially avoid spoiling the kids’ (and their families) Easter. For the sake of one day, morally that would be the right thing to do for me.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 09/04/2022 12:32

It is strange. I personally would isolate (we currently are). I'm sure plenty of people are too, whilst plenty of others aren't (at least on MNet anyway)! It's a shitshow.

Silverclocks · 09/04/2022 12:32

It's about keeping the country going while reducing transmission where you can.

You may well have passed it on to a few people doing your necessary job yesterday, but if you a kid unnecessary contacts to day, the spread is reduced compared to if you go the shops and out to dinner.

But ultimately, none of it's law so it's your choice.

Our holiday is ruined over DS catching it at school. Sounds like OP didn't have much of a choice.
Silverclocks · 09/04/2022 12:38

Although, I'd have told school I was still too ill to work on Friday too.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 09/04/2022 12:46

Maybe. It's a shitty position for employers to put people in and goes against health advice.

ArcheryAnnie · 09/04/2022 12:49

It's a risk - you really don't know who you will infect or how unwell they will be (potentially life-altering illness). Please stay home until the positive line has gone.

worriedatthistime · 09/04/2022 13:03

Its unfair all the onus is put on us
Now
Dh is postive as if tues and had been to work but his symptoms literally hit him tues pm and very faint line on lft
I have now since yesterday started to feel unwell with a very slight cough my lft still negative so I can continue to go out but last time ai had covid i only tested positive on a pcr not a LFT so who knows if ai have it , its unfair as hearing so many work places say go in .
I am staying in all weekend and will test monday but ai have to have treatment 3 x a week at the dr's that can't be missed , so I will have to call them and see what they say
Its all a mess and its rife around here every day I hear of another couple of people who have it
I only had it end of jan so if I have again then this could be it , i could be getting every 2-3 months putting all our lifes on hold

gettingolderandgrumpy · 09/04/2022 13:09

I’d stay home till negative, I felt better by day 4 was a faint positive so I asked if negative can I come back to work was told wait till 2 days negative so I did . I really sing think people should be going out if feel unwell regardless of covid. If you feel ok go out of big stay home . Some people it’s a couple of days others a couple of weeks .

It's not that this is incorrect at all but I'm very concerned by how many employers are now only paying SSP for covid absences (i.e., you won't get paid for several days) and saying covid absences count towards disciplinary procedures. A lot of people will simply have no choice but to go to work with it.
ArcheryAnnie · 09/04/2022 14:51

I agree the government regulations on this are nonsensical, and give the green light to bad employers who enforce irresponsible behaviour. I think this is the point that the unions should step in.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 09/04/2022 15:00

I am 9 days today and still strongly positive. I feel better today but all the while I have a positive I really feel I must stay in. As a HCP I am risk assessed to see if I am fit to work and as it's day 10 tomorrow I could technically go in.

Treetops09 · 09/04/2022 17:41

My employer is being cautious. I’m on day 8 but still testing positive so not going in (customer facing).

I’m counting from the day my symptoms started which was 4 days before testing positive. All the government advice now starts from the test date though. I have a hair appointment on Monday which would be day 10 so I won’t go if I’m telling testing positive (my hairdresser is unvaccinated) but will go out from Tuesday as 10 days have passed. It’s difficult to know what to do for the best.

WouldBeGood · 09/04/2022 17:46

Staying home til negative is unrealistic as it can take ages, long after you’re infectious.

Infectiousness is much less after five days, so I’d just go out if you feel well, much like any other illness.

user1471509171 · 09/04/2022 18:58

My school says we can come back on day 5 if we feel ok.

Watapalava · 09/04/2022 19:06

Try following nhs and gov advice which for adults in England is to not test

Usually by day 5 although can take up to 10 days it’s unusual to be after that .
Calmestofallthechickens · 09/04/2022 19:18

I have been in work the last couple of days despite positive test - my work have said to go in unless I’m too sick to work.

Because I’m public facing we have moved outside and informed clients of the reason (this was my request, not my work’s) and I’d say 80% of people were fine, kept their distance, and said ‘good on you for managing to come to work, hope you’re not feeling too ill’.

10% cancelled and said they didn’t want to see me (fair enough) or said it was terrible that I was at work (not my call, and the alternative was to close…)

10% didn’t wear masks or distance at all

worriedatthistime · 10/04/2022 09:46

@Watapalava where is that advice i haven't seen it , I have for kids bit not adults

Watapalava · 10/04/2022 10:02

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/get-tested-for-coronavirus/

Anyone who is no longer issued free testing is no longer advised to test.

All the 'questions' on mumsnet currently are because people are simply not following gov advice.

worriedatthistime · 10/04/2022 11:33

@Watapalava you have to follow the guidelines even if you don't test and have symptoms though so your still in the same position and many work places are askinv for a test if you have one
Your confusing free testing being availible
So i have covid and symptoms so even iF I never took a test i have to assume covid and follow the advce
Well i don't want fo isolate for 5-10 days with a cold so for now why i have tests left I can test for covid

worriedatthistime · 10/04/2022 11:39

@Watapalava and goverment advice is pathetic so I could not of tested but pretty much knew it was covid and then i feel ok day 3 so I just go to work and spread it because i can choose to ignore it as I didn't do a test to confirm
Most of us have more morals than that though , goverment guidelines are bullshit at the moment and make zero sense
I also have to visit the drs 3x a week where i could spread it very easily

Watapalava · 10/04/2022 13:31

You are not advised to isolate with covid unless you are unwell or have a high temp

If you simply have a cold you don’t have to isolate and are not actually advised to - positive test or not

balalake · 10/04/2022 14:25

I think you should not go into another building or enclosed space. A walk perhaps, say with your dog if you have one, but otherwise think of others.

I don't agree with the government policy on this, which will not surprise you.

TulipsGarden · 11/04/2022 04:12

Government policy is based on pretending Covid is over so we forget about how they partied during lockdown. It has absolutely nothing to do with sense or science.

Fortunately many people are sensible, are ignoring the government and still testing and isolating if they can.
