Hi all,

I'm in Wales and looked online but a bit confused.

Day 6 of testing positive for Covid (really ill not eaten in a week) but partner has left me and I'm alone with a 2 year old.

I know technically we don't legally have to isolate. So does this mean I can go to the shops? Food shopping? Pharmacy etc?
What about days out? At the moment I can barely walk straight but he's a very busy child and I'm going to need to entertain him for 7.30am-10pm. I'm a bit weak so I struggled doing half an hour at the park. Presumably I can legally go anywhere? I just dont want to infect anyone and obviously can't visit friends.

Ideally, you'd stay in as per the advice as to not transmit it.

Legally you don't have to do that.

MJ123 · 07/04/2022 21:41

Sorry just spotted your in Wales, not 100% if the above still applies - sorry I can't be more helpful

Illwithdisappointment · 07/04/2022 21:45

@MJ123 thats ok, I'm just confused. I agree ideally I'd stay in but I'm on my own now and will need to get some shopping tomorrow. God knows what I'll do with a toddler. We can do little walks but he's awake 14.5 hrs of the day, a walk won't be much entertainment!

Keep away from people - not onlymwhen its legallymrequired butnwhen it's the right thing to do.

Can you get on online delivery for your shopping?

Would a neighbour pop to the pharmacy for you?

Can you exercise the toddler on the open air well away from anyone else?

pinkcattydude · 07/04/2022 21:55

I thought in wales you were still required to isolate until day 10 or negative test after day 5.

Lovemusic33 · 07/04/2022 22:04

Online shopping?

MsMartini · 07/04/2022 22:06

gov.wales/self-isolation

Here is the Welsh guidance. I think "should" means it is guidance not law, but yes you are being asked to self isolate till two negative tests day 6 on, or day ten.

I would order online shopping if you can or ask neighbours. I don't see any problem with taking your toddler out as long as you are not in a playground or similar. You poor thing, it sounds really tough. Is there someone else - perhaps someone who has had covid recently - who could take him out for you, so he can have some fun and exercise, and you can get some rest?

BlooberryBiskits · 07/04/2022 22:19

Really try to rest as PP suggested to avoid long term fatigue issues

Illwithdisappointment · 07/04/2022 22:22

I can't get any slots for online shopping and will need milk etc before then. We've only lived here 3 months and I don't feel I could ask the neighbours, they are both elderly couples.

I will do my best entertaining the little one outside, just not easy with nothing to do and when I feel so week.

I do agree though that ultimately I should be avoiding people and realistically I wouldn't leave the house (other than a secluded walk with nobody around).

Hang on a second - your partner has left you - as in completely? If so he's a fuckwit and you're better off without him. Who the hell does that to someone with covid and a toddler?!! But still, sympathies if that's the case.

If that's not what you mean by 'left' - like they've just gone on a visit - can your partner not organise some food for you? Amazon grocery? Can get things like pasta and pesto and longlife milk to tide you over.

Do you know anyone local who's had covid recently who might be willing to look after your toddler for a bit? If I'd only just recovered from covid I'd do that for a covid positive friend.

There were a lot of volunteer mutual aid services set up when covid started - have a look on google for help in your community - you might be able to get a food parcel delivered. They may be able to advise on things to help with your toddler, perhaps some toy banks or donated toys to entertain him. Otherwise tv. Lots and lots of tv, it's not going to harm him and you need to rest.

For online shopping, see if you can get a slot with either co-op (who do same day slots) or Iceland- who I think do save slots for those who are isolating

You can do a full shop at Iceland (fresh fruit/veg/milk/meat etc) - less choice than other supermarkets but it’s fine for a week

I think you should isolate to be considerate to others but also really minimise the energy you exert so you can recover: having had a nasty bout myself, & several friends having issues after going back to work too early

Illwithdisappointment · 08/04/2022 00:15

@theemperorhasnoclothes yes, he's gone and that's in a while other thread! Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately my friends all have families and none of my close friends have Covid. My mum is 100 miles away and also has Covid!

@BlooberryBiskits thank you so much. I thought Iceland had gone bankrupt and have never ordered from them online! I've got a delivery coming 15.00-17.00 tomorrow so we are all stocked with essential and mostly non essential items ☺️

@Illwithdisappointment: I’m glad you were able to get a slot! Hopefully lots of tasty treats coming your way. Wish you a speedy recovery

Self isolation has not been mandatory in Wales since 28th March, but (as in England and Scotland) remains advisory.

If you are well enough you may go to the shops (if necessary) and/or take your child for a walk or out for a walk. It is a good idea to wear a mask indoors and keep your distance from other people.

In all honesty, covid is so prevalent at the moment, that isolation and other measures probably aren't making much difference.

Cases are sky-high in Wales and outcomes have been worse than in the other UK nations, despite mask and isolation mandates and other restrictions being in place in Wales for much longer than elsewhere.

Pootle40 · 08/04/2022 22:33

You have to eat so yes go to the shops if you are able.
