Funeral with Covid

I took my elderly aunt to a funeral this morning. The church was packed although we were spread around, I'd guess that less than 10% had masks on.
While we were lining up to go out and for her to giver her condolences to the family, one granddaughter stepped forward and said "I'm not coming too close, mum and I have Covid and we're not feeling that great!" Both were masked and they did stand a little further away but I was taken aback. The demographic of the mourners was generally older and I do feel like unnecessary risks were taken.
I get that the granddaughter and the daughter-in-law wanted to attend the ceremony but by the same token, many people last year were unable to attend funerals at all.
But is this the way people are going to behave from now on?

I think so. I honestly don't know where we go from here, once we done have testing availability. I feel for everyone in this situation.

Bonkerz · 01/04/2022 15:26

I noticed today the gov website changed covid advice to "managing respiratory illness at home (inc covid)"
They wore masks. They took precautions. If you are vulnerable you should also take precautions but yes I think this is how it will be from now on except people won't test so won't KNOW it's covid just that they are poorly

Bananabutter · 01/04/2022 15:28

Of course it is. If you’re well enough to go out you can if you want to.

We had covid recently; didn’t stop our day to day lives and haven’t worn masks since last year.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 01/04/2022 15:29

Only selfish people tbh and they might have done it in the past too. Everyone knows that the Covid figures are very high and that Covid can cause long-term health issues and that vulnerable people are more at risk. If they then choose to go into public places ... well, there's a degree of sociopathy. The government have failed miserably. But people deliberately choosing to put others at risk? That's firmly on them.
Everyone knows that Boris deciding to ignore Covid didn't mean it disappeared.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 01/04/2022 15:36

How can anyone justify going somewhere indoors with elderly people with covid just because you are allowed to. Such idiots around

Samarie123 · 01/04/2022 16:11

This confuses me...

Surely most would have been vaccinated and according to some people it stops hospitalisation !!!

I don't know why people are still wanting to isolate if the vaccines work, what's the point in them if you are still feeling at risk?

At least they told you not to come close and they were honest.

FairyCakeWings · 01/04/2022 16:15

It’s more than people will do in a few months time when no one tests at all anymore. I think it’s fine.

MissMaple82 · 01/04/2022 16:32

Yes of course it is because life needs to move forward! Would you miss a funeral if you had a simple cold virus?! No! People don't have to isolate anymore so mind your own business!

What more should they have done?

This feels like 2020 before we had vaccines..?!

Of course this is how it will be from now on
Thank goodness

seahart · 01/04/2022 16:55

I think I'm just not comfortable with someone who knowingly has Covid going to a place where vulnerable people will be.

Yes, they made others aware and didn't lie which I suppose could be seen as acceptable.
We did LFTs before we went, wore masks "just in case" and my Aunt didn't linger on the hugs & kisses! So sensible precautions taken.
The vaccines are wonderful but they're not any guarantee of immunity or depth of immunity so that's why I think we should remain cautious.
Perhaps I'm being too precious. Happy to be told so!

There are doctors all over social media sharing heartbreaking stories about how many people they are seeing with Covid. You're not being too precious. Our rates are horrendous but you'll have posters rushing to ignore that and to say they don't care about the rates, the longterm effects or the deaths. Maybe they get invited to Boris' next cheese and wine if they collude in supporting his lack of strategy and prioritisation of global conglomerates over the protection of the most vulnerable.

Is this a simple cold virus? No! This virus is entirely different. I recognise that some struggle with this, as Covid shares some symptoms that are similar to colds and flu, but it is genetically unique. At a funeral you're likely to to encounter people of all ages, including vulnerable people. Even with vaccinations, Covid can still make people like this extremely ill.

SpringRainbow · 02/04/2022 06:51

Unfortunately, yes this is how Covid is being managed at the moment. The Government message has changed so that we are now treating it like cold and flu.

Soon hardly anyone will even know if they have Covid as most people either won’t/ can’t pay for tests.

It’s not just hospitalisation that’s a disruption though. Even when vaccinated, catching Covid can be unpleasant and have significant consequences. I’ve lost 7 days of work in the past fortnight; my children were also both off school over a week. If we’re going to ‘live with Covid’ without any mitigation measures, absences will continue to be much higher than they were before 2020, because more people will be ill more often.
