Would you pcr? Or just lft in this case?

Pcr testing is ending April 1st right?

Dd has been sent home with a sore throat. Seems fine, she's eating etc. Not sure there's much wrong with her. I don't mind keeping her off.

I've done an lft which is negative, I intend to do another. School are asking for pcr as a few cases in the school. Nearest available pcr site is miles away now!

Buy Dd has had covid twice in the last 2-3 months. I know it's obvious you can get it again and again as she has but it would surely be extremely unfortunate that she would have it for a 3rd time within the 90 days?!

Lft's were actually very accurate when she had covid the last 2 times and picked it up on first testing attempt.

So say, she feels better tomorrow or Wednesday? And has a negative lft. Would you send her back to school? Obviously if she's poorly, I'd keep her off.

If school are asking for a PCR then do you have any choice? Order a home testing kit if you can't get out to a testing site?

SheWoreYellow · 28/03/2022 11:30

LFTs are much more sensitive than they were.
Can you ask the school for the health authority guidance on getting the pcr?

WouldYouIfYouCould · 28/03/2022 11:30

I wonder if the lfts are picking up other viruses as positive. I have had what feels like tonsilitis for a week but got a strong positive lft so assumed it was COVID. I’m awaiting a PCR result. It does seem odd to have covid three times in 90 days. Were the first two confirmed by PCR or just LFTs?

They haven't asked me directly. They've just sent home generic letters if kids have any symptoms!

My concern is that she's had covid twice within 90 days already... chance it could still be positive from that? Whereas lft's would pick up when you are contagious?

I'm not even convinced there's anything wrong with her to be honest. It was a stressful morning getting them to school (sen) and think she was looking for any excuse to say she was poorly to come home!

Where did you get that idea from?

@Kabs30 can you get a postal one? Do the school have any? Just tell them you can't get her to a testing site.

When does she start Easter Holidays?

umpkj · 28/03/2022 11:36

Dd had sore throat on Saturday and Sunday but lfts were negative. We sent her to school because no other symptoms.

SummerHouse · 28/03/2022 11:39

I have been to the test center more times than I care to remember with DS. I would not in these circumstances. Be different if she had one of the three (so called) named symptoms. But as you say it's a pain, she has a negative PCR, she has had covid twice recently.

There's a danger the PCR would actually pick up the previous infection.

Absolutely don't test her.

In my view you have done everything right and been very responsible.

The school guidance can't account for individual circumstances like this. So it's not relevant in your daughter's case.

First fine we all had it and she tested positive on a lft, confirmed by pcr. She had no symptoms at all but tested positive for 10 days.

Second time 6 weeks or so later there was an outbreak in her class.. she developed fairly mild cold like symptoms with sore sinuses and eyes. I did an lft which was positive, but negative by day 5&6. Positive pcr too!

Knowing my luck it'll hit us 3 times since Christmas 🤦‍♀️

*sorry negative LFT.

Piggy42 · 28/03/2022 11:43

@WouldYouIfYouCould have you had your result back? Am intrigued as also wondering if I’ve had false positive on lft but didn’t bother going to get PCR

Kabs30 · 28/03/2022 11:49

@MuggleMadness still got 2 weeks until Easter holidays here! Got this week and next at school! 😊

I would believe the lft, personally.

JaneAust · 28/03/2022 11:59

You're not allowed to do a PCR within 90 days of having a positive PCR. So you just can't do one anyway by the sounds of it. The booking system wouldn't let you.

You can now, if you have new symptoms.. or you could a month or two ago anyway. Dd had two positive pcrs within 6 weeks 😪

Oh, suppose you'll have to do 'something' then.

I'd probably ask the school what they want to do & tell them you taking her to a test centre isn't one of their options.

JaneAust · 28/03/2022 15:08

Sore throat isn't a new main symptom. It's up to you whether you take her for PCR but given she's had a positive within 90days and doesn't have a new 'main' symptom, she has a sore throat which isn't a qualifying symptom - this should be enough for you to push back and say no to the school because it's not inline with the guidelines
