15 year-old close contact, school have told us to test

Ds1 (aged 15, year 11) has just been identified as a close contact by school. They have said he needs to test every day for the next 7 days which will use up the last of the lateral flow tests we have.

We can afford for the occasional test when the government stop doing the free ones but not 7 days of testing every time one of the dc is a close contact.

Tell school you don’t have any tests.

ididntevennotice · 23/03/2022 16:14

They won't be asking you to test every day then though?

Hedonism · 23/03/2022 16:17

Just don't do it then.

Or order more tests, I thought that you could still get them free until next week?

Remmy123 · 23/03/2022 16:19

Don't do it if you don't have tests

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/03/2022 16:24

Just don't do it. They won't be asking to see proof.

elliejjtiny · 23/03/2022 16:42

Thankyou everyone. I have been trying to order more tests but it keeps saying there is none available. I hadn't thought about telling the school I don't have tests. Seriously sleep deprived at the moment thanks to autistic 7 year-old having all his interventions (which were already at the bare minimum) cut and having his class merged with the year above because his teacher has covid. So he's not sleeping much and neither am I.

Hope you all feel better soon.

Op the horse has bolted.
I tested dc on sat and they were positive. With only a weird head feeling nausea maybe slight temp but she didnt know.
I kept dc off on monday. But have now sent back. Mainly because all the teachers already have it as have everyone else i know. Im just fed up with dc missing school. We actually only tested to visit a relative as they didnt really have any of the 3 symptoms to with no contact isolation.
I now have it too. I do feel rough

RocketFire7 · 23/03/2022 18:14

Totally unacceptable on the let of the school. I suspect it will be down to a union rep or similar trying to find enough cases to close the school.

handmademitlove · 23/03/2022 18:19

Schools can still order tests so ask the school to provide them. They gave the capability to do so.

Blimecory · 23/03/2022 18:25

It’s impossible to get tests at the moment. Let the school know. We don’t have any. We’ve been trying for a week, and we have confirmed Covid. We just need to know when we might test negative.

Watapalava · 23/03/2022 18:42

Schools are overstepping

They are not supposed to contact trace anymore - that role was taken off them ages ago

Gov advice is contacts do not need to test daily

BluebellsGreenbells · 23/03/2022 21:58

We actually only tested to visit a relative

Good enough for a relative but not school staff. Nice.

GD12 · 23/03/2022 23:08

Just wondering. I'm in Scotland and we get a generic letter saying there's been a case in the class and your child is "low risk" (yeah sure, the whole class + teachers now have it). Anyway, is that the same us England or donyou not even get notified anymore?

elliejjtiny · 24/03/2022 08:58

He tested negative this morning so he has gone into school with the instructions to ask his form tutor or the pastoral care teacher for more tests.

@GD12 we get an email from secondary school if our child has been identified as a close contact by them saying we need to test for 7 days. The primary school don't do that although we have had emails recently saying things like "parents evening will be postponed this week as we have 11 staff off sick with covid" or "please ensure that school dinners are booked and paid for promptly this week as 2 of the kitchen staff are off sick with covid so it is even more important than usual that we know in advance how many children are having school dinners". Any other information I pick up from my 8 year old who likes to know exactly what's going on and to organise everyone.

@elliejjtiny Ah OK. Tbh it is kind of vague here, like I said a standardised letter and then nothing but from the parents WhatsApp group we know everyone is going down with it.

Kab3042 · 24/03/2022 12:35

Nope, not compulsory anymore. I mean it's a good idea to but realistically no one can get lft's now, no one will be able to afford to buy several so it won't be happening most of the time!

It wasn't even compulsory before the rules changed to be honest! When there was outbreaks in my kids school it was advised but not enforced or monitored!

Fedupsotired · 24/03/2022 18:43

That's really old advice!!!

rainbowunicorn · 25/03/2022 16:04

Just don't test how are they going to know if you do or not.?

Lovemusic33 · 25/03/2022 16:07

We don’t even get told if they have been a close contact. Dd2’s school sent out a email last week saying cases were high and to keep up the testing twice a week, they sent tests home (SEN school) but my dc1 hasn’t been given any tests for over a month now, she keeps asking for some and being told their aren’t any. I managed to pick one box up last week from boots but can’t get any online.

Feenie · 25/03/2022 16:13

You have absolutely no idea how this works. Union reps have absolutely nothing to do with that decision - even the Head doesn’t, ffs. Only Public Health have the power. Stop flinging about ludicrous misinformation.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 25/03/2022 17:12

@Feenie

Aren’t your union reps down at the pub right this min making a plan to close your school Monday as Monday looks sunny. We are thinking of having an extra long weekend and blaming covid!!

Feenie · 25/03/2022 17:14

😆😆😆 I am the union rep!

What absolute nonsense
CallmeHendricks · 25/03/2022 19:53

@MrsHamlet, There are seemingly no limits to the depths people will stoop to in order to disparage teachers.
