Am I supposed to take DC's to school? I have covid

Me and OH both have covid, kids not showing any symptoms yet.
Are we supposed to be taking them to school? I can't find any info about it.

I would just leave them off now but don't want to get into any trouble doing so.

DD is nursery so not to fussed about her being off but DS is at school.

Have you done a lateral flow on your son?

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 22/03/2022 07:45

Yes they are meant to attend as close contacts and under 18s dont need to self isolate.
Check with the school that they dont have any extra precautions in place like no family contacts attending

I've only got one left 😫 and I need it for my antenatal appointment on Wednesday. Can't seem to get any at all.

You would surely need 2 tests before your antenatal appointment? 24 hrs apart starting from day 5?
But it's unfair to send your ds to school with covid in the house without testing him first

inappropriateraspberry · 22/03/2022 08:01

Short answer - yes, you can do the school run, but obviously wear a mask etc.
Tell school, they may have some tests you could use, or they may be happy for him to go in.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/03/2022 08:41

You need to test DS. Is there no local pharmacies that have tests available?

ScottishTinydancer321 · 22/03/2022 08:50

Tbh would of ordered lft tests as soon as positive . You will need 2 tests days 5and 6. Also I would keep the kids of until they are tested I wouldn’t want to spread it In school.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/03/2022 08:52

I’d send them in, the rules have changed so we learn to live with covid.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 22/03/2022 08:54

Kids should be in school, ideally with someone else to take them.

If you’ve just tested positive then you wont be on day 6 by Wednesday and you need to test day 5 and day 6 for them both to be negative before you go to a medical setting.

LFT are available to order inline right now. I’ve just ordered some.

Jules912 · 22/03/2022 08:55

I would get someone else to take them if you can, but if not then wear a mask and try to stay away from everyone.

Sahgah · 22/03/2022 08:58

This is us as well. We sent ours in. I did have a few tests so tested them but not testing them everyday as we will run out of tests. Younger one now has a runny nose and I did a test on her in her sleep and it was negative so I sent them in.
The first few days I got a friend to drop off and pick up as I was so unwell I could not physically have taken them to school. It was hard enough just getting them fed and dressed. Today I had a very faint positive and no one to take them so I masked up and took them to school. It feels wrong to go out but they need to be at school.

Kage30 · 22/03/2022 09:01

I would take them in, if it's all outside and you stay distanced from everyone, the risk is minimal. Maybe arrange with the school/pre school to drop off a little later and meet staff outside?!

Kids can absolutely go in if no symptoms and/or negative lft. The lft testing is no longer compulsory for close contacts I don't think? When Dd had covid recently, I had a dilemma with Ds as he has sen and hates testing, he'd had covid the month prior and testing him is hell. School said he needs to be in and testing was not compulsory if he had no symptoms - and this was before the new rules come in.

Thewindwhispers · 22/03/2022 09:14

It’s very tricky OP. The ‘rules’ are now very muddled. I know one school that tells kids with covid “come in if you feel well enough to work.” That school keeps sending angry letters threatening attendance fines to ill parents 🧐 I know another school where if a famiky member has covid the whole family are asked to isolate at home for five days even thiugh tthey don’t legally have to.

(As a resukt of these policies the first school now has a huge number of sick children and many staff are quitting, the second school has very few covid cases.)

In your position I would keep the children home for five days.

And get some LFTs! If the government supply has run out then Boots sell them, or many chemists / libraries / schools are still handing them out free. Ask a friend to get some for you, or ask the school if they have any, most do.

MrsAmber · 22/03/2022 17:36

I just followed the guidance from the gov.uk site that states children should still attend their educational setting if LFT negative, so that’s what we’ve done albeit with some misgivings!

Bickles · 22/03/2022 17:41

First I had Covid then DH. DS has been in school throughout, he’s even been on residential. We did LFT on him on the day I was positive and it was negative but after that we’ve just been keeping an eye on him and will test if he has symptoms such as cough or temperature.
TBH I am not prepared for him to miss any more school or miss out on his residential unless he is actually unwell.
In terms of going to school, yes send him. Whether you test him is up to you. Mask up and keep distance at drop off and pick up or stay in the car if you can.

OdeToSadDisco · 22/03/2022 17:46

DH and I had it recently, just after DD. School asked that we take them late and collect them early, driving them right into the premises, and the school staff accompanied them to and from the car so we didn't need to get out. We were asked to test DS daily (he avoided catching it).
