Were they OK and what were their symptoms?

Dh tested positive 2 days ago, DD (6m) and I were negative on PCR as of yesterday. However tonight when doing her bath I noticed her skin was quite mottled. She feels a bit hot as well, temperature is 37.9 at the moment.

So i guess that's it and my mind is now running away worrying that she'll suddenly take a bad turn or have some long term effects. Seems like such an unpredictable virus.

If you could share your experiences that would be great so I know what to potentially expect and look out for. Thanks!

I’m pretty sure dd had it back in 2020 when she was under 1. She had a rash high temp etc. our gov here (jersey) wouldn’t test under 2’s. But she bounced back to normal after a couple of days.

I’d personally keep an eye on temp make sure they get lots of naps. Stay hydrated. And unless they seem “off” in themselves I wouldn’t worry too much.

I know it’s easy to say though and I’ve been known to sleep on dds floor when she’s had a cold just in case she needs me. (Wrecked my back in the process….)

rozzers · 18/03/2022 19:11

Just recovered here. DD 7 months had temp just under 39 for 24hrs that didn't come down with calpol, and was breathing more rapidly than usual. Also had a bit of a funny tummy and was generaly grisly! On the cusp of calling for help, especially as her breath rate was very close the being dangerously fast, but thankfully she started to bounce back and now just has a bit of a sniffle (may or may not be covid related!)

Nurserygerms · 18/03/2022 20:21

Thank you both. I wasn't that worried at the prospect of her catching it but now it's real I'm really freaking out somehow! @rozzers, how worrying about her breathing! DD had bronchiolitis at a month old and really don't want to be back in A&E watching her chest like a hawk!

I have had no sleep... DD woke crying every 20 mins or so so I never had enough time to get back to sleep. She won't nap this morning either. She'd probably nap in the pram but I guess we're not allowed outside? Arghh day 1 and I'm struggling already! She'd feel so much better with calpol but she spits it all out so not much actually goes in. Help!

If you're in England you're fine to go out for a walk somewhere quiet. In fact you don't have to isolate and can do whatever you like but I wouldn't recommend that.
OliveOyl321 · 19/03/2022 10:09

My little boy had it a few weeks ago. He’s 3 months old. My DH had it and then I got it. Honestly he was fine. He had a temp (highest on day 1 at 39C) which made me panic. I phoned out of hours doctor who advised me to keep treating temp but if it didn’t come down to go to A&E. Used Nurofen/Calpol to control it and it only lasted a few days. He had a runny nose but it didn’t seem to affect his sleep and only slightly reduced feeds.
My other son was hospitalised with bronchiolitis as a baby so I understand the anxiety around watching the oxygen levels and his breathing! Nightmare.
Hopefully your little one won’t be too badly affected.

OliveOyl321 · 19/03/2022 10:12

Also with Calpol, did you try using a syringe. It releases it a bit slower than the dispenser that comes with Calpol. Release little by little aimed at back of the cheek and keep her just slightly elevated to let gravity help. That’s what I found worked for me. Too much at one time and my children just pushed it back out with their tongues.

ememem84 · 19/03/2022 13:33

If you don’t feel up to going out could you put her in the pram anyway and rock her about in the livinf room?

Really feel for you.

Is there anyone else who’s help?

Nurserygerms · 19/03/2022 20:58

Thank you @OliveOyl321 I use the syringe that comes with it and it is too much for her even if I try to do small amounts at a time. She's still barely had any calpol today, luckily her temperature hasn't spiked. She's now really congested and gagging with phlegm, very similar to the bronchiolitis!

Thanks @ememem84 DH is here but has confirmed Covid. He did push her around the garden in circles in the pram so she'd nap for an hour though! Wish I could have slept during that time, but I was making lunch and clearing up for my toddler.

Should head up to bed now as she only seems able to sleep properly in the first part of the night. It's been almost 2 hours, let's hope she continues!

Just as I wrote this, she woke inconsolable. Will I every sleep again:(

OliveOyl321 · 19/03/2022 21:05

Hopefully she’s over the worst of it. The chestiness might linger longer, it did with my baby. Go to bed now and try and sleep in case she wakes again. Good luck x

Caffeineandcarbs · 19/03/2022 21:11

Your experience regarding sleep sounds like ours recently. Baby DS woke every 40 mins or so inconsolably crying and I thought I’d never sleep again. That lasted for four days, then he was much better. Sleep improved about the time the congestion started to lift!

Hope things improve for you and your little one soon.

Nurserygerms · 19/03/2022 21:29

Thank you both for the support and hope! I can do this!

MissDynamite23 · 19/03/2022 21:37

Good luck for tonight!!

My DS had covid when he was around 16 weeks. Also inconsolable and only slept whilst being held for about a fortnight. Needless to say we were knackered, not to mention ill with covid ourselves (although only like a bad head cold).

He’s been ok since but has had a few recurrent coughs and has really struggled with worse eczema and skin rashes ever since. I think he’s generally ok but it’s definitely been tough on him. I was vaccinated whilst pregnant and breastfeeding so assume that’s given some antibodies. He was very sad for a couple of weeks.

He also had a miserable virus before Christmas at 9 weeks (my eldest brought it back from nursery) and was worse.

For the last few months I have wondered too if I will ever sleep again. DS is currently waking every 1-2 hours and it’s killing us!!!

Oranges555 · 19/03/2022 23:35

Does she drink from a bottle? Try putting the calpol in just the teat and let her suck it out, worked for my 8 week old baby a charm after his 8 week vaccinations, I tested positive the day after he had them on Thursday and I think he also has it but can’t tell if he was grisly from the vaccinations or covid yesterday. He seems better a-bit better today though!

Nurserygerms · 20/03/2022 07:43

We slept, I can't believe it! The night before she only slept whilst held and latched on so I was quite worried but she slept in her bed and only woke a couple of times. I guess she was exhausted.

@MissDynamite23 well done for surviving the fortnight. We also had a fortnight of no sleep with the bronchiolitis and it was horrendous. Having babies with illnesses is so miserable and seems to happen so much more with an older sibling. To make myself feel better, I tell myself that their immune system will be brilliant by the time they start nursery themselves. I hope you have some help with the hourly wake ups and they pass soon.

@Oranges555 she won't drink from a bottle unfortunately which makes everything a bit trickier. Won't take it from a spoon either. In fact we're meant to start weaning this weekend but don't see that she's ready as she pushes it all back out with her tongue. Hope your LO stays healthy and you're OK.

I'm the only one of 4 in the house to still be negative. It will probably hit me once I finish looking after everyone and they've all recovered!!

OP posts:
ememem84 · 20/03/2022 07:50

That’s what you want though. Well. You don’t. But you know what I mean.

You want them to be able to look after each other if you need to rest.

I’m so glad you managed to sleep. Xxx fingers crossed for speedy recoveries all round. And for immunity for you!

Okeydoky · 20/03/2022 07:53

Glad things are improving.

Sounds like a good idea to postpone weaning until the tongue thrust reflex goes. Some are ready sooner than others.

Babycovhelp · 20/03/2022 08:32

My 7 month has covid right now. He's been poorly for a few days. Elevated temp, snotty, and cough. He's eating OK but not really drinking - so we're battling to get fluids in him

Nurserygerms · 20/03/2022 19:07

Oh definitely @ememem84, that first night was so tough I thought there's no way I could cope with this whilst poorly myself!

@babycovhelp hope your LO was OK today. DD is much brighter but has also started to refuse feeds today and screams if I try. I guess she must have a sore throat. She's not coughing really but very very snotty.
