Did you monitor your young DC overnight when they had covid?

Suspect my 3.5yo has covid following a faint positive and then a quicker positive on LFTs this morning. Went for PCRs today.

She's been bouncing around as normal, just has an intermittent cough. No temp. Her oxygen levels are top notch according to the oximeter I have from when we had covid (her included) 18 months ago.

I have anxiety for background. I'm wondering whether (okay more like how) to keep an eye on her overnight - do I bring out the old breathing monitor? Pull a mattress into her room and sleep on the floor? Set timers to check on her? Not sleep? 😬

She had it mildly when we caught it end of 2020, although as she was only 2 we couldn't figure out if she also lost her sense of smell temporarily.

Nope, didn't monitor either of mine.

3WildOnes · 12/03/2022 20:25

Absolutely not. The only time I have stayed up with any of mine is when they have had a sickness bug and they need me to hold the sick bowl for them. I did also check on one of mine when she had a temp of 40.

practicallyimpractical38 · 12/03/2022 20:26

I brought mine into bed with me as his temp kept going up ( came down with medicine) . I just think you get a better night's sleep when they are close.

ReadyToMoveIt · 12/03/2022 20:26

No, I didn’t. All three of mine have had it. The only time I like to have them in with me overnight is if they have a vomiting bug.

Nighttimenope · 12/03/2022 20:28

You really don’t need to worry. There is no information to suggest that there is cause for alarm with an otherwise healthy 3.5yo catching covid that would mean you should stay up/wake up/sleep in their room.

HoneyItIsntGoodLuck · 12/03/2022 20:28

Mine slept in bed with me the night after testing positive. But that wasn’t because I felt I needed to monitor her, but because she was unwell, and that’s what happens when they’re unwell.

The following day she was much more back to herself, sleeping in her own bed, and aside from going in when I went to bed, I didn’t check.

Tonsiltrouble · 12/03/2022 20:30

I always sleep next to mine if they have a temperature, easier to help them in the night and one of mine voms if his temperature spikes. But it depends on the child, the setup and what makes you more comfortable. Covid was pretty mild for mine.

IDontDrinkTea · 12/03/2022 20:31

Nope, put her to bed. Enjoyed the fact the youngest (6 weeks old at the time) was tired and slept more than usual. Eldest (3yo) made up for it by waking up in the night but didn’t do anything extra other than bunged her some calpol if she didn’t feel great

changenametimeagain · 12/03/2022 20:34

Thanks everyone. I hate this part, waiting to see how it affects us. No temperature yet and I really hope it stays that way.

She likes pretending she's a dog sometimes so I got a face lick today. Don't think I'll be avoiding it 😬

Mine came into the bed with me. He was coughing relentlessly so it was best I was close etc & could settle him etc.

He was back to normal quickly! Think we had 2/3 rough nights but days not too bad. He was 2.

Quartz2208 · 12/03/2022 20:51

DD had Covid 2 years ago at the start when she was 11 and she wasnt great - coughing and breathing issues and she was with me for 4 nights so I could keep an eye

itisyourbirthdayKelly · 12/03/2022 20:52

I co sleep with my 18 month old anyway. We didn’t test her but she was a little hot and had a snotty nose for a few days.

My 7 year old had one bad evening where she was hot and her head hurt so she slept with me but she always does when she’s sick.

Fantail · 13/03/2022 02:19

I monitor mine if they have a high temp or a cough (she has asthma). Or if she’s vomiting. But if she’s happy in herself then no.

thaegumathteth · 13/03/2022 02:48

I monitor mine if their asthma is bad or their temperature is very high. Regarding temp I just Medicate if it's really really high or they're struggling with it.

(Obviously if they need me and are I'll I'll be with them too but no monitoring)

SpringRainbow · 13/03/2022 03:35

I agree with others, I would only monitor mine if they were obviously unwell.

If they seemed fine in themselves then I wouldn’t worry.

RichTeaRichTea · 13/03/2022 07:13

No more than I do with any other illnesses. I can’t actually remember whether I checked mine in the night when they had covid, which suggests I probably didn’t need to

SamMil · 13/03/2022 08:08

No. Mine has it at 3.5 too and i didn't do any extra monitoring.

MrsGHarrison87 · 13/03/2022 08:13

No. They all had it just after Christmas. One of my DC had a viral infection 3 weeks before she had covid and she was worse with that. I did set my alarm several times throughout the night to check on her but with covid she didn't have any symptoms beyond a mild cough for a day or two.

RewildingAmbridge · 13/03/2022 08:15

DS slept in bed with me when he had it, his cough was really bad and he couldn't sleep unless propped up, it was easier to have him leaning on me and I slept propped up on pillows. I also felt better having him with me as his breathing was affected

MiniMaxi · 13/03/2022 08:23

You don’t need to stay up all night. Sleep in together if you prefer, and set a couple of alarms to check if you feel worried. If she’s asymptomatic she’s unlikely to get suddenly very bad. Hope she feels better soon!

WaterBottle123 · 13/03/2022 08:47

Nope! It's a mild virus for kids, no need to monitor

AnnesBrokenSlate · 14/03/2022 01:12

I brought them into my room so I could monitor their temp during the night.

Kage30 · 14/03/2022 11:37

No I didn't, but I'm a light sleeper and doors are left open so I could hear if they had any problems, they slept fine with covid, neither of them had much of a cough. My kids had such mild symptoms, I wasn't really concerned, I would be more likely to check on them with a stomach bug or other respiratory virus as covid was so mild for them (I do reckon they had more severely in early 2020 though!).

If you would feel better by sleeping close by, do it. Maybe she can sleep in your bed? But honestly, she'll be fine!

changenametimeagain · 18/03/2022 19:14

Thank you everyone ❤️ day 6 and still mild which I'm grateful for. She's woken us a few more times overnight but only for a few minutes - wee, etc. I also sleep with doors open so easy to hear her Smile

She's had a very intermittent cough (which made me test in the first place) and today seemed a bit hayfeverish - runny nose and a bit more sneezing. I was hoping the end of covid was near but got a positive on the LFT today. Almost there!
