Exposed yesterday, high BMI, so worried

I have very bad anxiety so have pretty much stayed in for the last 2 years. I thought I couldn’t go on like that so I met a friend for lunch and typically he has messaged to say he has tested positive this morning.

He had a negative lateral flow yesterday morning before we met but we hugged, had lunch and shared a lift and were together for a few hours.

I’m so anxious, I’m 27 and boosted (Pfizer jabs and Moderna booster, booster was early January) but my BMI is 40. I know I should have lost weight but it’s not that easy. I feel like I’m going to get seriously ill, a friend was hospitalised recently with pneumonia because of it.

Not sure why I’m posting really unless anyone with a similar BMI has been okay?

I had covid unvaccinated and my BMI is higher than you. I have had worse colds.

You are young and well boosted. You will be fine. You might not even get it.

DespairingHomeowner · 12/03/2022 17:45

Your age is so much in your favour, plus your vaccinations were more effective ones & quite recent so I think you should feel confident

I would suggest you take a good dose of vitamin D (eg 3000 units a day) & multi vitamins and zinc to support your immunity

Focus on eating nutritiously & getting lots of sleep for the next few days

There is a lot of Covid around so support your immune system and try to lose weight but slowly and in a healthy way.

I say that kindly as I have recently lost 25 pounds and this has helped me during my recent bout of Covid. Also, when you lose weight it comes off around your organs first so even losing 5-10 pounds would help you

Thank you so much, I’m glad covid wasn’t too bad for you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post. That is helpful, I’ve just ordered some multivitamins. My sleeping pattern has been awful recently so I’ll try and rectify that. I’ll definitely be on it with losing weight too. I’m really kicking myself, I have lost weight quite a few times since the start of the pandemic but I just put it back on again, I’ve been eating terribly the past couple of weeks.

My BMI is similar.

I felt similarly scared when exposed to a close contact a year ago, but didn't get Covid at all.

And then last week I actually tested positive and it just felt like a bad cold.

Not to say there aren't risks, but try and keep a sense of proportion.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2022 18:00

I'm vaccinated with the same vaccines as you at about the same time frame, older than you with a similar BMI. I had covid recently and it was barely anything. Slightly coldy and achy for 2 or 3 days and that was pretty much it. I didn't even need any time off work (I can wfh).

gingerbreadtea · 12/03/2022 18:03

Vaccinated with same as you and lived in the house with our 12 year old who had covid a month ago. Probably lived 'normally' for 24-48 hours before we tested her and realised she had it. Neither i or my partner (same vaccines) caught it. Similar BMI and older than you so its not cos im fit and healthy that i managed to avoid it! Just saying, you may well not catch it all!

SantaCarlaCalifornia · 12/03/2022 18:09

I've got a higher BMI than you and I'm in my 40s.
I had covid in December, fully vaccinated but not yet boosted, and it was fine. I was horrified when I realised I had it but as someone said above, I've had colds that were a lot times worse.
I did have a weird symptom of hearing loss and tinnitus but that's very rare and TBH I was just happy that I wasn't severely ill.

Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate your posts.

Higher BMI and much older. Was very tired, but not once did I think “oooh don’t feel good, should I phone the GP!”.

If I’d not tested, I’d just have assumed peri/laziness/winter blues.

Whybirdwhy · 12/03/2022 18:27

I have a higher BMI than you, had Covid before the vaccines - it was a bad cold nothing more. You'll be fine.

CopperCloud · 12/03/2022 18:29

I have a BMI of 43 and I'm currently 5 days into covid. Please try not to worry. I feel like I have a really shitty cold, but have 100% felt worse than this.

I have a friend that is overweight and suffering with cancer and recovered well from covid. I've a friend who is slim and had a really tough time with it. It really is a roll of the dice on how it might affect you!

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 12/03/2022 18:36

I'm slim but twice your age, so I'm at far more risk from Covid. I felt a bit poorly for a few days. People three times your age and twenty times your risk shrug off Covid all the time if their vaccines are up to date.

Wolfiefan · 12/03/2022 18:42

What are you doing about the anxiety OP? It’s not healthy to hide away longterm.

Arghxbdhgd · 12/03/2022 19:35

Thank you everyone, it is reassuring. (Trying to ignore the fact that those that didn’t fare too well won’t post!)

Thank you, you’re definitely right but I think I’ve only just realised/come to terms with that as I’ve thought that I was justified to keep away from people given my risk factors (along with trying to lose weight). Luckily I have recently started a new job that gives us access to 6 CBT sessions so I’m going to access those.

Has it during the second lockdown and my BMI is similar to yours. I was terrified but I was fine, just a bit breathless and very tired. I was taking vitamin D at the time because I’d read that that helped, don’t know if it actually did.

I lost a couple of stone after that experience… all back on again now though. Blush

Fallulah · 12/03/2022 19:53

*had it

Rockbird · 12/03/2022 20:19

Just to add to the posts above, I currently have Covid. I'm 50, boosted and similar BMI. I've had what feels like a bad head cold with fatigue and achy limbs for a week. Now feeling almost back to normal except knackered and I'll be back at work on Monday. I've been terrified for 2 years, am almost relieved to have had it now.

HerbErtlinger · 12/03/2022 20:23

Higher bmi and older, all 3 vaccines. I felt rough but have definitely had worse colds. Try not to panic

Yogaca1 · 12/03/2022 20:53

Similar BMI and in my 50's . Same as you was Gerry worried about it and avoided getting covid for 2 years but tested positive about 2 weeks ago. Was tired and headachey with some dizziness but otherwise ok. Important to rest and keep hydrated. Was fine after a few days.

TypicaIMe · 12/03/2022 21:33

I tested positive today. I'm almost 50, BMI 37, immunosuppressed and have an autoimmune disease and high blood pressure. I'm waiting to get my referral for antivirals.

This is my fifth time with Covid. It's the first time I've been severely immunosuppressed (I started new drugs last autumn) but was still regarded as CEV before due to my RA/previous medication. There were no antivirals available for my past infections.

Each time, I was fine. The first time, two years ago, was the worst - I was unwell for about two weeks. But DH who is in his 30s and weighs ten stone wet through was much worse than me.

I've had four vaccines and four previous infections so I'm hoping this time won't be too bad, particularly when I've had the AVs.

I'd bet my house that you'll be fine, OP. That's if you catch it at all - you may well not.

Arghxbdhgd · 12/03/2022 21:35

Thank you so much again everyone, it’s really kind of you to take the time to reply.

@TypicaIMe I hope you feel better soon and get through quickly! Thank you for replying when you’re positive yourself.

My BMI is MUCH higher and I'm older. I had covid recently. Had a head cold and sore stomach for a day.

Littlepinkpeg · 12/03/2022 21:39

A reduction in BMI may also help your anxiety massively, good luck op, hope you dodge it.
