Could this child still have been infectious?

Hoping someone with a better grasp of the rules/covid logic can help me figure this out.

A child in my child’s school tested positive on Saturday.
Was apparently very ill and feverish constantly until at least Wednesday. Was still testing positive on Wednesday.

Was back at school today (Friday).

The child was all over my child when I collected from school, trying to hug and kiss, shouting right in their face.

I get irritated by her being all over my child (it’s clearly overwhelming for my much smaller child and not welcome) BUT I’m wondering if my irritation about that in general is making me paranoid about the covid or whether I’m right in thinking that this girl was probably still infectious!
Parents admitted they sent her back because they wanted a break before the weekend as she’d been home all week and their other kids were still ill with covid.

Due to visit a pregnant friend this weekend so am possibly being more cautious than usual.

Absolutely could still be infectious. It's common to be positive after 10 days.

Lindy2 · 11/03/2022 17:23

Today would have been 7 days since testing positive. Most people are infectious for a couple of days before they get a positive test result which would make today day 9 since becoming infectious.

I would say the main risk has passed. I think the first 5 or 6 days are the high risk times.

I would hope that they had received 2 negative tests before being back at school but I guess that can't be guaranteed now.

I'd not be happy that they were all over my child but I think it wasn't too high a risk given the timescale.

I wouldn’t be thrilled BUT it’s entirely possible she was negative.

itsjustnotok · 11/03/2022 17:37

I thought you needed two negatives before returning to work/school. If this has happened you should be ok. If not then I’d be irritated.

ReadyToMoveIt · 11/03/2022 17:38

She could have been, but there’s no way of you finding out.

Dotdotdotdashdashdashdotdotdot · 11/03/2022 17:45

Plenty of people are still positive day 7/8/9 so yes, it’s possible.

Thanks all! I appreciate the responses.

They had just spent the whole day together so I wouldn't be fussed about the hugs at the end of the day. She could have tested negative Thursday and Friday morning.

ShaneTwane · 11/03/2022 18:49

Yes she could be positive or she could be negative unfortunately no way to know. I tested positive on Monday and negative again Wednesday and Thursday so fingers crossed your child doesn't get it.

My DD tested positive on Sunday. Lateral flow was negative today & if it’s negative tomorrow, we’ll be back out enjoying life.

It’s possible the child has had 2x negative flows & was perfectly ok to come back to school today.

Testing is gone in two weeks, so we’ll stop being able to know!

JanglyBeads · 11/03/2022 20:15

Also, you don't know (presumably) if she had symptoms before testing positive, that might move her day count on a little.

DespairingHomeowner · 11/03/2022 23:11

Balance of probabilities this child was negative: as young kids seem to clear the virus a lot faster than adults

inappropriateraspberry · 11/03/2022 23:17

Well, Thursday and Friday would be days 5 & 6, so they shouldn't be at school! I'm surprised the school allowed them to go.
At the earliest, they'd be back on Monday, at the latest, Wednesday after 10 days and no symptoms.
