Are people still testing and isolating?

Sorry to sound silly, I’m just confused after seeing several people (on SM) saying they have tested positive, some without symptoms and moaning about isolating. I thought we no longer needed to test, tests are no longer free, DD’s school are no longer testing or giving out free tests. I thought the advice was to stay home if your unwell and go to school/work if you feel well?

Dd had a sore throat over the weekend (started Friday), we don’t have any tests so she just stayed in and had yesterday off school, she was fine this morning so I sent her in. We are all triple vaxxed and have had covid (in September).

Why are people still testing their kids and keeping them home when they have no symptoms? Why are people isolating when they are not ill?

Tests are still free.
Guidelines are still to isolate if you have covid.

I know more people now-through friends/school/family/work who have covid than at any previous point during the last two years! Some are quite unwell with it.

But there are no longer any isolation payments so the lowest paid can't afford to isolate.

why on earth do people still think 'its the law'??

Powaqa · 10/03/2022 18:02

My DH's office has just had to close again as 1 person who had covid decided not to isolate and came into work despite knowing he wasn't supposed to. He still gets paid. He has now infected 9 others .
My DH had some mild symptoms but the test is negative.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/03/2022 18:05

Still testing, will isolate if necessary (as are most extended family).

Have several tests left. Once we have to pay, I’ll not test but behave as though it’s Covid and keep to myself.

I’m in the fortunate position of being able to do that, though. Not so easy for very many people.

I don't live in England!

I live in Scotland and make my own decisions

I tested my DS who was sent home with sickness and a banging headache, positive line came up before the control line. I was meant to be seeing someone vulnerable this weekend so glad I checked!
Will probably only test DD if she shows symptoms though given she had it less than 2 months ago.

I will test if me or the children have symptoms otherwise not. DH has to test for work.

Your husband’s colleague is a selfish **.

Wish this was a disciplinary matter - being I’ll with Covid right now I dread getting it again

Gerbilteeth · 10/03/2022 23:38

In Scotland still required to do full test and isolate for 10 days. Household has to isolate for 10 days too, or take a negative test every day if fully vaccinated.

Gerbilteeth · 10/03/2022 23:39

If work tells people not to come in if they test positive, and they do, that is probably a gross misconduct offence which could result in dismissal.

GreenTeaRoses · 11/03/2022 01:01

I remember former colleague coming in with a horrendous cough, sputtering “it’s not COVID, it’s just the flu.” FFS. You dont get a merit badge get a merit badge for coming into work or school unwell. Rest at home and fell better but if you have to go in, be courteous and wear a mask. No surprise that sicknes ran rampant in this school: COVID, runny tummy, chicken pox all at the same time)

I now work in a school with 1200 students . Staff test regularly (and isolate if positive) and are careful so that staff and student absence is minimised due to illness.

Abraxan · 11/03/2022 06:55

Lots are still testing and isolating in my experience, yes.

We still have several children and some staff off at the moment with covid. Most have symptoms of a very heavy cold - hence the testing. Both myself and Dh know a number of people currently positive and isolating.

I don't know anyone who is positive and still out and about, though guess they wouldn't necessarily say.

They'll definitely be some people just not testing too though.

why on earth do people still think 'its the law'??
Because in some countries it still is and presumably not everyone here lives in England.

You don't get a merit badge but many people also don't get paid if they don't go in!

It I had symptoms I would test. If I knew I had it I would isolate (for 5 days) as much as was practical. No one I know would be happy with me around them if I had covid.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 11/03/2022 07:23

Numbers of tests is down, by 2.6% over the last 7 days (rolling) and it's been declining at roughly that kind of rate for a while now.

Anecdotally, people are isolating, unless there is an absolute compelling reason to mix with others. That schools ask for 5 days seems to have permeated through as the 'right thing to do'. And of course people who have vulnerable family/friends/colleagues tend to take infection control seriously.

But obviously that not everyone.

Care rates are rocketing again - up 52.9% in same day period - numbers per 100k fell briefly to 347, but is now at 423.

Hospital admissions and deaths also up (17.3% and 0.8% respectively)

That won't mean the covid wards of earlier in the pandemic, but it's still tying up a lot of NHS effort in maintaining green/clean areas.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 11/03/2022 07:46

I’m not testing I’ll only test if say it was required for going into hospital for example or if my household became ill.I’d isolate if necessary but I’d still go out for walks . Work are saying wfh if have covid so I would do that but I’m not testing anymore unless I have symptoms.

Abraxan · 12/03/2022 21:04

I'll test as I'm more vulnerable. It means that I can access antiviral treatment if I'm positive, which needs to be given by day 5.
