My son has been having intense stomach pains since he had covid a month ago. He is off school due to the intensity of the pain. We have seen various Drs / had tests done but so far nothing conclusive has emerged, blood tests look normal etc.

The pain came on while he was getting over covid, it was his second pcr-confirmed case of covid so I am sure there is a link between the pain and covid.

We have booked to see a consultant but wondered whether has any experience with thus, thanks in advance.

how did you get on at the specialist? My DD was having some issues before she got Covid, stomach pains after a cold which were diagnosed as mesenteric adentitis.

She then got Covid twice in fairly quick succession and each bout seems to have made her stomach so much worse. It's awful. We've been referred to the hospital but there are no appointments available so we're waiting for them to come back to us - we have to give them till the first week in May! I'm desperate but simply cannot afford a private appointment so we need to wait.

Holland and Barrett Aloe Vera tablets helped us with this, I guess the liquid would too although it tastes awful. But I am a bit evangelical about it as its the only thing that worked for us, and they are cheap and easy to take.

Hi everyone rhe consultant today said he'd seen a lot of gastric inflammation in kids post covid. He is writing to my gp recommending some further blood tests, thyroid test and cal protectin as per another PP upthread he ruled out PIMS because no fever and ruled our mesenteric adonitis as pain has gone on too long. So he said if those tests come back as negative then he said time should heal it but if not go back in thr meantime a month of dairy. Obviously this was specific to my son but it did give me some hope even though could take months to heal, consultant said. Thank you for all of your comments and hope everyone recovers soon. I know the pain is very intense and hard to live with so sending you all best wishes.

I posted on the heartburn thread about this earlier, but my 8yo had Covid at Christmas and has since had awful stomach pains and ended up in A&E just before half term, after prolonged vomiting of acid and blood. He was treated for very severe reflux as a toddler and only weaned off Omeprazole 18 months ago. The doctor we saw in A&E suspected covid might have caused a resurgence. He’s now back on an emergency high dose of Omeprazole and is due to see a specialist soon with a view to endoscopy. I have inflammatory bowel disease which has caused more worry about this. I hope the situation will improve for him and others on this thread !

I hope your wee one will be ok. I had awful stomach pains after covid last month and my stomach swelled up so much I looked about 5 months pregnant.

I was seriously constipated and sore - I'm sure everything was inflamed. I still get stomach pains now but it is definitely easing.

Is he managing to go to the toilet normally?

Soninpain245 · 08/03/2022 00:12

Bettertocryinamercedes yes he's going okay but the whole intestinal tract seems painful for whatever passes along it. Poor chap...

I thought I would just add to the thread for completeness as I am sure others will also read this looking for answers to a similar issue. My son has had his endoscopies and despite not having classic symptoms or obvious blood results he has been confirmed with both Crohn's disease and eosinophilic esophagitis. The consult has said that he was very surprised with what he saw on the inside as it doesn't match up with his other results and that he must be in considerable pain. Covid could have been the trigger or coincidence, we may never know. The only thing to add is that the consultant we saw said he was the second case in 2 weeks who's main symptoms were intense pain which was rare and he felt there was a link worth looking into. We are just starting treatment and it's still all very stressful but we do have some answers now.

I’m not a child, but each time I’ve had covid I’ve been fine during the infectious phase, but 2-3 weeks after I have had the worst stomach cramps ever. Lasted for 1-2 months. Odd thing is, now every time I seem to get a cold it leaves me with stomach issues after.
AtrociousCircumstance · 06/04/2022 21:48

We had covid in the house before Christmas, and one of my DC (although they tested negative on PCRs, twice) had classic covid symptoms - hot, cough and cold, weird taste - and later started having inexplicable bouts of nausea. They have come and gone. Blood tests all came back fine. They seem to be reducing over time…so I wonder if in fact the PCRs were inaccurate…

marangu · 06/04/2022 21:57

Following as my son as my son has these exact symptoms and had covid twice, once before Christmas and again in January

PCRs aren't 100% accurate, I got a negative PCR on my first day of symptoms. I did a LFT next morning and it was positive.

Stomach pains can be a sign of liver problems. The HSA have very quietly slipped out a warning tonight about a rise in children with liver problems. Very, very quietly. I’d ask for full bloods.

JS87 · 07/04/2022 08:48

Could it be ibs? Are the pains cramps? You could also look at avoiding foods high in histamine as they can cause stomach issues in some people. Covid can definitely trigger histamine issues through mast cell activation. Do you have a family history of celiac disease? That is thought to be initially triggered by a viral infection I think. A lot of people with long covid do seem to have developed dairy and gluten intolerance so hopefully cutting dairy will help.

I'm the OP with a name change.. hi again... NovemberSnow I'm so sorry to hear this. Did covid bring on the crohns do you think? Did the pain get worse or stay the same? My son's pain is still there day jn and day out. We are seeing a herbalist to sooth the inflammation hopefully, will see what they can do. I wonder whether we should get a crohns test for our son NovemberSnow.

NovemberSnow · 07/04/2022 20:53

Hi, the consultant wouldn't commit to anything beyond saying that it may have been the trigger to make it flare up for the first time. He was very interested that he has 2 boys of a similar age, both had recent Covid, have intense pain which is worse when sitting but few other Crohns symptoms but both have cronhs inflammation seen on endoscopy. If you have not had one yet push the GP for the calprotectin test it's simple and a very good indication of inflammation as a start point. Mine has missed virtually a whole school term and is desperate to get well but even 2 1/2 weeks of steroids and other medication is not having much impact yet, I really feel your pain it is very distressing.

NovemberSnow · 07/04/2022 20:55

Just to add my sons pain is constant, lower abdomen and stomach but misses the middle section. He is more comfortable lying down but still had pain.

Stirrrupsaddle · 07/04/2022 21:49

Thanks NovemberSnow we have paid privately for a cal protectin test we are currently waiting for the results. We might have to pay for the crohns test I think as well. Thr nhs gp practice isn't that interested to be honest. My son has missed a lot of school too but for me the worst thing is seeing him in pain every day.... I really hope your son feels better soon. Xx

This happened to my brother's friend - he had covid and was told his stomach cramps was long covid until he ended up on A&E with a v high temperature and he got diognosed with Chrones.

The therory is it doesn't cause these autoimmune conditions but can spark it off if it has been lying dormant. My brother's friend is pretty sure he had exact symptoms wheh he was a teenager.
