Covid at 95

My 95 year old Grandma is in a care home which is currently closed due to a covid outbreak. I found out today that she has covid. She is triple vaccinated.

I know no-one can say what will happen, but does anyone know if very elderly people are coping well with the virus after being triple vaccinated? I’m worried.

It would obviously depend on your aunt but I know someone aged 94, who last month got Covid. She went to hospital with it, recovered and is now at home.

jpbee · 21/02/2022 19:36

@Stichintime Thanks for sharing, that’s good to know. It’s harder because I haven’t been able to visit for a while due to the lockdown in her care home so it’s adding to the anxiety.

My 96 year old grandmother got covid at the start of the pandemic. Shes still with us. Smile

MissMaple82 · 21/02/2022 19:48

I know of people in the 90's in a care home that got it during the first lock down before the vaccine and coped with it

Cherrysherbet · 21/02/2022 19:55

My Mum is nowhere near as elderly as your Grandma. She’s 76, but bedridden and just home from a long hospital stay (6months). She has been positive since last Wednesday. She’s had a cold/ cough, but is recovering well. I’ve had it too, and she was no worse than me.

I hope your Grandma gets well soon.

Thank you everyone, this is very reassuring Smile

The Queen is 95 and she has it. Sounds like she's doing OK but obviously will have the best medical care available.

Greenstone16 · 21/02/2022 20:06

Yes, my grand parents in their mid and late 90s got it a month ago, and just had a very mild cold for 2 days (one had fever for one day). They had been tripled vaccinated.
We were also very worried.

mynameiscalypso · 21/02/2022 20:06

I was talking to someone who runs a big chain of care homes. In this current wave, they haven't had a single resident need hospital treatment despite lots of outbreaks. A small handful of residents have died with Covid but the Covid wasn't a factor in their deaths. Vaccines seem to have made an absolutely enormous difference

Choux · 21/02/2022 20:19

I thought this was going to be about the Queen. Sorry to hear your Grandma has Covid - hope she stays well.

The Queen is doing ok so far but she might be on antivirals. You could check this list of conditions to see if your grandma is eligible for antivirals.

DF had it late 80’s. Still here 2 years later and he caught it whilst being discharged from hospital.

I know someone that goes into several care homes for their job and apparently although there are lots of outbreaks (which is not good for so many reasons) they are not experiencing the issues that they were pre-vaccines. Very minimal in terms of hospital care being needed or deaths at the moment. I really hope your Grandma is ok. I would be worried too but there is lots of reason to also be optimistic. It's an excellent suggestion from Choux to check out whether she can access anti virals.

My husband's host mum in states had COVID, no vaccinations as she has a problem with her immune system. She was 86 and she's still with us!

FairWindClearSailing · 21/02/2022 20:52

In the States* that should say

HesGotHisTrombole · 21/02/2022 20:52

101, barely a symptom!

Liamgallaghersparka · 21/02/2022 21:16

I know of a couple of very elderly people who came through unscathed.

mobear · 21/02/2022 21:27

My grandmother was a-symptomatic with it, also mid-90s and this was pre-vaccinations in the early days of the outbreak.

bookworm14 · 21/02/2022 21:28

Anecdotal evidence, but my granny had covid in December 2020, aged 96, and was completely asymptomatic.

Wigeon · 21/02/2022 21:40

Relative aged 99 and a half, triple vaxxed (and last vax was a while ago, given her age), had it over Christmas and it was like a fairly regular cold. Not too bad at all.

Two other relatives aged in their 80s, also triple vaxxed, also had it at the same time and although it was fairly unpleasant, in terms of heavy cold, they were nowhere near needing hospital.

Fingers crossed for your grandma too.

frankie001 · 21/02/2022 22:58

101 year old, slight cold like symptoms now back to normal.

Usernumber5253747293 · 22/02/2022 07:16

The queen has it and apparently only has mild cold like symptoms.

I know of many older people getting it and been totally fine, even before the vaccines but even more so now. I also know a younger person who is clinically extremely vulnerable who tested positive and has had not symptoms whatsoever despite long term breathing issues.

I hope your Grandma feels better soon!

Whitefire · 22/02/2022 07:55

My 89 year old MIL had it this time last year, not vaccinated, only picked up as she was on a hospital ward.

jpbee · 22/02/2022 09:59

Thank you so much everyone, I'm feeling a lot calmer now. I did think of the Queen since she is the same age and all seems ok there.
