What time in the press conference later? And it is that it - It's all over? Back to Pre-March 2020?

I assume it's 5pm but can't find confirmation.

I am feeling slightly bereft and alarmed (bit also excited and happy) that this is coming to an end?

But it's a real mixed emotion.

Are we really going to end it all? Testing? Isolation?

7pm

Very starnge, but it's not the end is it. How many people would go into work or mix with vulnerable people knowing that they might give them Covid? There's a huge number of infections out there. Thankfully hospotalisations & deaths are not above what you would expect in a normal winter, but even so...
With this amount of virus circulating another variant will soon pop up & it may not be as benign as omicron. Also part of the mildness of omicron is that so many people have antibodies. That will wane.
Having said all that I do see that we can't live like this forever & it will become just another virus circluating etc etc, it just seems odd when there is just so much of it about. Most people I know have avoided it for 2 years & seem to be getting it now.

Think BJ tabled for 4.30 to speak to the house, could be pushed back to 5.30 with presser to follow.

Just checked as @Scottishgirl85 had a time. Twitter feed in photo.

Hopefully the6 declare an end and remove all testing and isolation rules. Its over

Our Queen is 95, has covid and is cracking on with with things, that's good enough for me.

Do away with isolation, fine. But the confirmation that CEV people will not have access to free LFTs is devastating. I need to test daily, symptoms or no. I need to be as sure as I can be that I don't have covid when I inject my weekly immunosuppressant drugs.

We've got to move on, isolation should end - but not giving CEV people the tools they need to protect themselves is hideous. For us, it's absolutely not over.

ENoeuf · 21/02/2022 16:57

They’ve said vulnerable and the elderly will get free testing?

GreenLunchBox · 21/02/2022 16:59

Bozo is talking to the house now.

Press conference with Whitty and Vallance at 7pm. I wondered where they were 🤔

Overthebow · 21/02/2022 17:00

@0pheliaBaIIs it says the most vulnerable will still get free tests, which I assume will be the 500,000 immuno-compromised.

It seems a bit bizarre to be judging things by the effect of covid on one person, who happens to have access to the best medical care in the UK.

Actually, the official response says that free testing will still be available to a small number of at-risk individuals, so you might well be included in that group (more details to follow).

Giveaschitt · 21/02/2022 17:02

Sorry, I realise that doesn't talk about daily asymptomatic testing. But presumably if there is a negative need then you will be able to get them on prescription?

Giveaschitt · 21/02/2022 17:03

*medical not negative!

Symptomatic over 80s will have access to PCRs. Those of us who need to test regularly without symptoms won't have access to LFTs.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 21/02/2022 17:22

It's over...except for many people still being ill with it. My mum was in hospital last week with it, my dad also got it and was very poorly but luckily avoided the need for hospital. I think it's right not to have all the restrictions we had at the worst, but isolating if you actually have it is hardly much of a restriction. Just basic quarantine, which is common sense.

GreenLunchBox · 21/02/2022 17:23

Exactly. No doubt she got started on the antivirals as soon as she tested positive

freckles20 · 21/02/2022 17:24

@0pheliaBaIIs would you mind me asking if it is only infection with Covid that would mean you have to stop your medication (so other viruses don't pose the same issue).

Karma1981 · 21/02/2022 17:24

When I visit my mum in a care home I will have to pay to test from April to he able to see her?
That's if they still want people to test before they enter.
I agree about all the rest though, as long as tests are available to the most vunrable free.

toomuchlaundry · 21/02/2022 17:27

Surely it’s people visiting the vulnerable who need tests too?

Also surely they needed to say the Queen was carrying on with light duties because otherwise many people would say she had died or if she was ill Boris would struggle to say COVID was over.

Wonder if the police report is due soon?

It'll be up to the care homes to decide I guess. Puts them in a difficult position - inflict financial penalty on visitors or risk bringing covid in to the care home.

Covid is more dangerous to me than many other infections, according to my consultant (it's to do with something called cytokine storm, a massively exaggerated immune response which causes organs to fail). It's also far more widespread than flu currently, and from Thursday those who have it won't be isolating - so there's a greater chance I'll be exposed to it if I go anywhere.

If I have a sore throat/flu symptoms and it's not covid, I have to contact the hospital immediately so they can evaluate whether I need treatment/can continue with my medication. I do have a better immune response to flu vaccines than Covid vaccines and have so far managed to avoid catching it. And in a normal respiratory disease season, far fewer people have flu than currently have covid.

In short, covid (even asymptomatic) means stop treatment immediately. Anything else, get advice/evaluate the situation.

Outlined in parliament today so you can see what will happen in news already

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/02/2022 17:38

I don't think they've hammered out details around testing. They don't usually bother to wait for that before making grandiose announcements. See the vaccine roll outs for CEV 12-15 and 5-11 years.

toomuchlaundry · 21/02/2022 17:47

Be interesting to see how upbeat Whitty is at the news conference, tend to listen to him rather than Boris
