Would you test for just a morning cough?

Ds 11 has woke up coughing for 2 mornings in a row, gets up and then doesn't cough all day!! He was prone to this when he was younger anyway but not so much in recent times.

He had covid a month or so ago and didn't even have a cough.

The funny thing is my kids have had so many coughs in the last 2 years, none were covid, pcrs negative. Then they actually caught covid and didn't even get a cough 🤯

Would you test? If your child was coughing a bit in the morning then fine all day. Otherwise fine. Not even coughing during the night or anything!

My son woke up with a cough. Lft negative. No other symptoms. School insisted on a Pcr which he had at 12. Positive. Grrrrr. We all had negative lfts at 7am and all of us tested positive the next day

Nightmare. I agree, lft's can be hit and Miss. we all had covid not too long ago. Dd has had it twice. I'm just sick of it all!

It's half term here so weighing up whether to put him through a test (asd, finds it really hard to test). Or just stay at home and chill without testing!

It's so difficult isn't it. I was positive for 10 days as was my husband. My son 5 days. Thankfully he had no symptoms after that cough.

Jules912 · 21/02/2022 11:44

Is he asthmatic? My DS gets a cough ( usually in the mornings) whenever he gets any illness due to his asthma.

RedToothBrush · 21/02/2022 11:52

a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

It doesnt sound like a new continuous cough. Its sounds like a cold, damp weather cough.

Lft if you can but I doubt I'd do a pcr in your circumstances unless it gets worse / persists or he has other symptoms.

If he cannot tolerate that and staying home is an option this week do that.

Isolation is supposed to be ending this week and its all going to go to advisories anyway.

Be sensible. Do what you think works best for you under the circumstances. Obviously crowded places are probably not wise.

I don't think you are achieving much but a rod for your own back with an asd kid (who you will probably want to go for a walk with for both your well being anyway).

I would do lfts yourself though, if you can't get him to do one.

Just a morning cough I'd be thinking dust mite allergy tbh. We spend a fair chunk of the night breathing in their droppings. There is bedding you can get to help with that as well as hoovering the matteress etc

No he is not asthmatic but has had some respiratory issues over the years. He had chest infection and chest infection when younger - lived in a damp flat, had an inhaler and often on steroids hand little. He's also prone to coughing after running around in the cold. Morning coughs have been a thing for him especially when it's cold but not a problem for a good while now! If he gets a cold he will cough for weeks. Thankfully no colds for a while and covid barely affected him!

I will likely test him but it's traumatic - he has sen!

Thanks! Dd actually has allergies so we have to keep on top of things. Ds usually isn't prone but DD's allergies have been really bad this week so you never know!

@RedToothBrush, thank you! I will likely test him. He coughed between 5.30am and 8am when he wasn't fully away (but not in a deep
Sleep, he didn't cough at all during the night). Now totally fine and running around like a loony.

If he had Covid a month ago then I don't think I would test him. It could still show the positive within 90 days. Would contact GP for potentially testing for athsma

Well a while ago I would have agreed but my youngest child - Dd had covid twice in a month with negative tests in between and new symptoms. She caught off me and her dad the first time then from school the second after an outbreak! So unfortunately it isn't impossible. But yeah definitely less likely to get it again!

It's pushing about 2 months since ds had it now though! 🤯

No, especially if he had Covid a month ago.

^ this is exactly how my asthma presents OP.

MalbecandToast · 21/02/2022 15:50

Another one here saying it sounds very much like asthma. Mine is triggered by the cold air too.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/02/2022 17:14

Similar to DS2 having an asthma flare-up.
Are you under asthma care with his history?

Happy36 · 21/02/2022 17:15

Why wouldn't you test?

Piggy42 · 21/02/2022 17:19

No point testing now, isolation ends Thursday anyway

No not at all, it was suggested he might be asthmatic when he was younger but with age things have got better 🤷‍♀️ If he was to get W cold, even a mild one - he would cough for weeks after!! Covid didn't affect him McIntyre at all though which is good but crazy as a cold would affect him more than covid.

He doesn't cough every morning. It seems to come and go! I find he coughs more on the days the heating has been left on too late in the evening or when it's really cold outside! 🤦‍♀️

Does it come and go? It's really not a problem all the time?! When he's fine, he's fine. Thank you 😊

Yes.
But my DS didn't have any of the symptoms when he had covid. Just a scratchy throat.

Koala817263549 · 21/02/2022 18:13

Yes it comes and goes depending on lots of factors, including weather, central heating and recent colds! I also did not cough when I got covid, but am currently still coughing 4 weeks after a mild cold.

Can it be several weeks or months in between spells?

crazy isn't it with covid! None of us really had a cough with covid or even a fever! We all assume cough = covid, but from my experience in the last 2 years and all the coughs my kids have had during the pandemic have never been covid and covid did not cause us to cough!

Dd had a nasty nasty cough in November and pcr negative. She then caught covid a few weeks after whilst she still had the lingering November cough and covid did not worsen it, if anything made it better as was at home resting. The November cough lingered until January and she isn't the one we are talking about here. as above Ds will cough for weeks after a cold!

I'm done with coughs. In our experience headaches, stomach aches etc etc are just as likely to be covid than a cough!

I will likely do an lft on him. But he hasn't coughed since 8am this morning.. will se did he coughs again tomorrow morning!

My youngest didn't have any symptoms at all the first time she had it. The second time she had very mild cold symptoms, I'm talking very mild and barely there! I only tested her as most of her class had it, she said her throat hurt once but was eating and drinking fine! She sneezed a few times (she gets allergies anyway) and said her eye hurt (but looked fine) ! If there wasn't an outbreak in her class I wouldn't have tested for this!
