Blowing blood out of my nose

I’m 2 weeks post covid infection and I’ve been prescribed antibiotics for a suspected sinus infection. I’ve got lots of pressure in my face and my front teeth.
I started off blowing yellow/orange snot out of my nose. Now it’s bloody.
I’m on day 3 of the antibiotics and no improvement.
The pain is still present and now I’m blowing fresh blood out of my nose every time I blow it.

I’m not sure what to do.

Tbh, I can get bloody nose even after normal cold, if I'm blowing my nose a lot. Just damaged blood vessels, isn't it?

Finish the course of antibiotics, and if it doesn't improve, go see the doctor again?

Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 13:55

Thanks for your reply.

There’s blood everytime I blow in varying degrees.

I just don’t understand why the antibiotics hasn’t helped yet. Maybe it’s viral, or a follow on from
Covid.

Sinus infections are difficult to get rid of. I know because I have had sinus problems for over a decade. At one point I had pain for five months continually. I ended up having my sinus’ drained and my septum straightened to try stop the problem occurring again. It didn’t. You will likely need stronger/different antibiotics.

BunsyGirl · 19/02/2022 15:36

Oh and my DS had Omicron recently.
I tested negative but I felt under the weather and then developed sinus symptoms and have blood when I blow my nose. DS is still full of snot three weeks later so I think that Omicron is causing sinus problems.

Cornettoninja · 19/02/2022 18:16

I’d think the blood will be due to weakened vessels in your nose from the infection/blowing your nose.

Do speak to your doctor on Monday but it’s also worth googling how to massage your sinuses to help shift the mucus and maybe order a sinus rinse kit (you can also search on YouTube on how to do it), again to help clear out the infection. If you’re bleeding that may be adding to the volume/thickness of gunk already accumulated making it harder to move.

well that's a picture I really didn't need to see and i had enough years of sputum and other bodily fluids at work! you've just to try and be a bit more gentle with your nose OP, if you rubbed a fresh scab that was trying to heal on your arm repeatedly you'd make it bleed, your nose lining is no different and the capillaries are very close to the surface. try gentle massage, hot and cold compresses, steam inhalations...and garlic and horseradish both good for sinuses ,you can get tablets if you don't like eating them!

PolkaSpace · 19/02/2022 20:17

Oh that's vile. Um..phone the doctor if it carries on I guess?

Kittykat93 · 19/02/2022 20:19

Gosh a warning for the pic would have been nice 😂🤢

I get this sometimes when I've been blowing my nose lots..don't think it's a covid thing

Bagelsandbrie · 19/02/2022 20:20

That’s quite a lot of blood if you’re blowing that out every time you blow. I’d contact your Gp on Monday.

Mykittensmittens · 19/02/2022 20:25

I’ve had about 15 sinus infections in the last 5 years including a trip to a&e where the upper jaw and face pain was only helped with a bag of ice on my face for hours. I have a nasty nasal congestion after the infections pass, and cough from the post nasal drip for ages (weeks).

I get these infections without fail after ANY cold,
Flu, and also Covid. A lingering nasty mucus thing makes me cough with post nasal drip and also makes me want to blow my nose. Although I can breathe clearly.

I have tried sinus rinses, sprays, decongestants, inhaling steam, antibiotics, acupuncture, etc

The ONLY thing to help is a mild steroid spray called flixonase. 3 days of this and it stops it all.

brio4ever · 19/02/2022 20:54

Are you coughing anything up? Or have chest pain? Is it bloody up your nose, say if you stick some tissue up there, or is just in the snot? I saw a GP when symptoms worsened after the 10 days, and was promptly sent to a&e as I had coughed bloody phlegm/sneezed bloody snot and they needed to rule out blood clots.

Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 20:57

@brio4ever I haven’t coughed anything up. It’s just coming from my nose.
I’ve also got the sinus pain so I’m assuming it’s related to that.

I hope it’s not blood clots Sad

What did yours turn out to be?

OP posts:
Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 20:58

@brio4ever oh and no chest pain either

OP posts:
Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 20:59

If I stick tissue up there I get bits of blood mixed in with the snot come out too.

OP posts:
Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 21:00

@Bagelsandbrie Do you think I should finish my antibiotic course first?

OP posts:
Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 21:01

Sorry for the pic, I hope it hasn’t grossed people out too much.

It kind of feels like when you accidentally inhale water…that’s the kind of feeling I’m getting in my sinuses/nose.

I had the same thing recently with a sinus infection - like a pp, the first set of antibiotics didn’t shift it, and I had to go back to the GP for a second. Don’t leave it as long as I did though - within a few days of finishing the first set of antibiotics, I was also holding ice/hot water bottles against my face for the pain and codeine etc wasn’t touching it.

Yellowdinosaurs · 19/02/2022 21:07

@Eyesonstalks oh dear. Shall I finish my current antibiotic course?
Did you have the blood when blowing your nose too?

OP posts:
brio4ever · 19/02/2022 21:17

No clots thankfully. Originally diagnosed at a&e with a second chest infection after blood tests and x-ray, and sent on with antibiotics. Ended up back in a&e a week later (3 weeks post-positive test) with worsening symptoms despite antibiotics. Admitted overnight, more blood tests, X-ray, CT scan, IV antibiotics. End result was second chest infection and laryngitis on top the damage covid has caused to lungs - GGOs (hazy patches) and partial collapse on left. Blood from the strain of coughing - likely the same for you but sneezing strain, but should definitely be checked out by a GP. Definitely finish your course of antibiotics, it maybe that you need a second course.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 19/02/2022 21:17

If you've got broken capillaries in your nose from blowing your nose or inflammation then every time you blow your nose they'll break again. Antibiotics won't stop that happening, it will only stop when you stop blowing your nose as much, so it's like a side effect of getting better rather than what the antibiotics are actually treating if that makes sense.

Eyesonstalks · 19/02/2022 21:17

I’m not a doctor but I am guessing that they possibly wouldn’t give you a second set until you’d seen the first course through to the end…? Perhaps an actual doctor can jump on the thread and confirm.

Yes. Apologies in advance for TMI, but for about 5 days, I had a streaming cold and when I blew my nose it was the consistency of snot, but completely blood-red. The first set of antibiotics stopped the blood but didn’t stop the pain. By the time I finished the second set, I was no longer crying with the pain every night, but it took me perhaps 5 or 6 weeks to feel “right” again. Whenever I tried to go to the gym or for a run, the whole thing would start again. It’s fine now though- just take it easy for a bit, maybe.

Hello. I know this is a very old post from 2022 but when I googled a picture of my nasal discharge, this is what Google took me to. You are the first person I’ve ever seen that I can relate to with what I have in my nasal cavity. Do you mind replying to let me know what you did to clear this up? I’m freaking out because it has actually started looking like the “calamari parasite “they have nicknamed a particular parasite. Your picture looks like what my used to look like at the beginning. They are absolutely horrid by now, though, and is looking definitely more than just a sinus infection. Hopefully you can tell me what steps you took to get rid of your infection and or if it turned worse to the point where it looked like a parasite. Thanks.
