Have I got a cold and DD has covid?

DD tested positive two days ago, she's feeling rotten.

I'm achey - head and body, snotty, have an irritating cough especially at night and my chest feels like I can't quite breathe in enough air...but LFT x 2 are negative?

If you have a cough then go for a PCR
LFTs can give false negatives which is why a negative test isn't always a true result

False negatives on LFTs are really common! That's common knowledge by now.

Yeah I'm too poorly to drag us out to test site.

Rubbish really DH and son have no symptoms and negative tests but if that's not reliable it's hard to know what to do for the best with work/school etc

There's a chance you do just have a cold but there's also a chance you in fact have covid and lft's aren't detecting it!

I had a cold when Dp had covid. Then I actually caught covid so two viruses back to back. There is some suggestion having a cold protects against covid if you come into contact with it. It may explain why I caught covid at the tail end of an existing cold over a week after Dp got covid! 🤷‍♀️

That's sounds a bit grim!

I felt like I had a cold for 10 days before I tested positive. During this period I was exposed to my kids who all caught covid. I felt like I had a cold but all lateral flow tests were negative. I realise in hindsight that I should had taken a PCR but I didn’t. Then 3 days after testing positive I was negative again. I think I definitely had it earlier but the lateral flows weren’t picking it up.

Me and DD had cold/ cough symptoms with negative tests for 3-4 days before positive tests on day 4 for her and day 3 for me. DD was actually a bit better by the time she tested positive.

DH tested positive on Wednesday, I had the start of a ‘cold’ from Saturday evening. Tested straight away but all negative until this morning which is day 7 for him. I made the decision to stay home with him anyway (on maternity leave so not difficult for me to do) so thankfully I haven’t been putting others at risk in the meantime.

I tested positive on a LFT 2 days after I started getting cold symptoms. My DH already had Covid and due to other circumstances I hadn't been anywhere else to have caught a cold so I knew it was Covid, and just waited until the positive tests showed up.

Even after 2 days the line was reasonably faint but got stronger as they days went by.

My positive test came 6 days after DH's so quite reasonably I could have not done a test and carried on (T&T say to do LFTs for 5 days).

I'd say chances are you have got Covid but it's just talking a while to show up on a LFT.

As PP have said - get a postal PCR or just keep testing and stay home in the meantime.

Hope you feel better soon.

I'm now 17 days post positive result and 19 days post starting to feel rough and I still don't feel 100%.

Other than extra tiredness it did just feel like a really rotten cold (which I always take ages to shift anyway).

You have symptoms so you should go for a PCR. My DH was negative on LFT and positive on PCR the same day.

Tigerblue · 15/02/2022 08:01

It took 2.5 days and four LFTs for me to get a faint line, the following day it was red. The day it was red I managed to get myself to a testing site, although, not sure I was concentrating that well on driving!

From my experience I'd say if any of you have any symptoms, I'd assume it's covid and keep yourselves wrapped up indoors away from others.

My DD had a snotty nose for a week before she tested positive.. I guess she could have first had a cold then Covid, but the snotty nose never disappeared in between...
