Do PCRs still tell you which variant you have?

I have Covid and wouldn’t mind knowing which variant I have - do they still differentiate? Won’t bother ordering a pcr if not

Thanks )

No they don't tell you.

Wnkingawalrus · 13/02/2022 12:49

This has never been standard.

PriamFarrl · 13/02/2022 12:50

Nope. They don’t tell you and I don’t think they ever did.

I’ve had covid twice and neither times did know what I had.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 13/02/2022 12:50

They have never told you

Millicent2022 · 13/02/2022 12:51

Ah thanks all, won’t waste their time then with one

It’s almost all omicron (of some type) in the U.K. right now.
Cookerhood · 13/02/2022 14:39

If you have Covid at the moment it's almost certainly omicron (about 99% of sequenced cases are).

AnotherMansCause · 13/02/2022 14:40

DD, DH & I had covid in December, our PCRs didn't specify.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/02/2022 18:40

I'd assume that my December dose was Omicron as it timed with cases soaring to their peak. At the start of the month there was more ambiguity. Omicron took dominance very quickly.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 13/02/2022 18:42

I read an article on BBC news this week that said only 1 in 6 cases are omicron. Surprised me as I thought it would be higher.

Cookerhood · 13/02/2022 19:36

According to the UKHSA briefing of 11 Feb:
As of 7 February 2022, 7,194 genomically confirmed cases of BA.2 have been identified in
England. Sequencing data is complete up to 31 January, at which point 95.4% of sequences
were BA.1, 4.1% were BA.2 and 0.5% were other lineages

BA.1 is omicron and BA.2 the other omicron variant that has emerged.

Cookerhood · 13/02/2022 19:37

So not 1 in 6

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 13/02/2022 19:38

They don't tell you as an individual, but they do test a proportion to find out what is circulating, and to spot any new variants.

JanglyBeads · 14/02/2022 00:55

When omicron first appeared in the uk they did tell you if possible, because you and your household had to isolate at that point. This process stopped once it had taken hold.

Where did you get 1 in 6 from? It's over 99%!

I'm assuming the 1 in 6 referring to the BA2 Omicron sub-type.
