Outbreak in office

Whathefisgoingon · 10/02/2022 08:59

Last week my employers removed the mask requirement and social distancing, this week so far about 30 people of around 70/80 total are sick with covid, including myself.

They are still making everyone else go in to the office, no wfh allowed. They haven’t even shut for a day.

Is this normal?

It will be soon so I guess they are just making a head start

Enjoy your freedom

Yes normal. Try working in a school with no masks and over half your class off with covid zooming into lessons with a new case every day but no requirement for kids to test. But thank goodness we can carry on as normally as possible. We just need to get on with life now. And soon we won’t have to isolate anyway.

AlexandraEiffel · 10/02/2022 09:07

Wow I'm amazed such a high proportion of you haven't already had it! Are there not many with school aged children? Or are they all in the group that aren't infected?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/02/2022 09:07

I work in a factory. We've had all this already. It will come to everyone, you just have to deal with it now.

hashbrownsandwich · 10/02/2022 09:16

I work frontline NhS so I guess my opinion of 'getting on with it' is probably a little different as I've been working throughout the pandemic, compared to someone who has had the luxury of being protected.

SatinHeart · 10/02/2022 09:41

I guess if its not normal already, it will be soon. Where I work there is still masks/distancing etc but pretty much everyone with kids has had it recently anyway.

CorrBlimeyGG · 10/02/2022 09:44

Welcome to the new normal.

But as long as Johnson's poll ratings are good, the government don't give a shit.

Already having had Covid doesn't stop you getting it again @AlexandraEiffel – it might reduce the chances for a while, but people are catching Omicron just weeks in some cases after previous (presumable Delta) infection.

We as a family have had it twice in about 6 weeks the school said they are seeing a lot of cases at the moment with people who had it Christmas getting it again

You can get it twice.

Goooglebox · 10/02/2022 10:23

I don't think children feel very free when they're pretty unwell and half their class is off, then the other half is off when they return and it happens again the following month. Omicron is shafting children.

Madmog · 10/02/2022 10:36

Not great, I know, but it's what many of us have been dealing with throughout the pandemic, as well as the pressure of covering for staff off sick. It's only going to get worse in the spring.

GirlInACountrySong · 10/02/2022 10:39

Yes we just had this but we are through the other side now

GirlInACountrySong · 10/02/2022 10:39

@Madmog why is it going to get worse 'in the spring'?

lifeissweet · 10/02/2022 10:42

Soon enough, people won't be 'off' with Covid unless they are quite sick. They will just come into work coughing and feeling a little like they have a cold, they won't be testing. Not so many people will be at home with it, so it won't be so disruptive.

Very few children get extremely unwell with covid. My DS has now had it twice. The first time he was mildly ill for 48 hours, but had to spend 10 days at home as per the rules. The second time he had a sore throat for 24 hours before testing positive, then had 7 days at home when he was perfectly well. About half of his class caught it both times, and none of them were really unwell either. Some had no symptoms at all. Neither DH nor I caught it from DS either time. The biggest problem for children at the moment is being forced to isolate because they happen to test positive. Testing isn’t even compulsory so there’s no doubt many children in school who are asymptomatic/have cold symptoms (but actually covid) spreading it around anyway.

My children are vaccinated but the children at our local school have been really, really unwell actually.

Goooglebox · 10/02/2022 14:26

So unwell the majority of one year group was home last week with gastrointestinal issues, sore heads, throats and some really high temperatures. These children are six. Covid shut down their learning all on its own. And they are not immune now either. North America and Europe have vaccinated for a reason.

Goooglebox · 10/02/2022 14:28

The Wuhan strain has a completely different impact on children because it attacked a different portion of the respiratory tract in a different way, leaving children unscathed. Unfortunately, it has changed.

MarshaBradyo · 10/02/2022 14:29

Yes they wouldn’t shut over this

Flippydip · 10/02/2022 18:06

Sounds normal. We haven't had masks or social distancing in the office and I think one person has had covid through the entire pandemic. I don't think the masks will have made much difference, its just unlucky that you've now had an outbreak.
