No longer required to isolate after 24 February??

CorsicaDreaming · 07/02/2022 22:17

I heard this in passing from a not necessarily very reliable source at work today. I can't find anything about it and wondered if anyone else had heard of this?

She seemed to be saying that after the 24th February people are no longer going to need to self isolate even if they had a positive Covid test. It would "just be treated like a common cold".

Can anyone shed any light on this?
Or is it just completely made up?

24th March

SickAndTiredAgain · 07/02/2022 22:19

I think 24th March was what was being discussed, so yes, the idea is right but I think your colleague is a month out.

CorsicaDreaming · 07/02/2022 22:23

Ahh thanks. I think... gulp!

This may or may not be true . But don't forget public health is now being governed by politicians DESPERATE for 'feel good news' .. NOT public health experts and scientists.

I for one. Could NEVER knowingly walk around deliberately infecting people with a disease that kills. There are currently over 500 people with Covid on ventilators. It's NOT over. There is a huge amount of infection in the population. For sure many will get a cold like infection however there is a percentage that will be very unwell.

I'll take my advice from the WHO. I will stop isolating when we move from pandemic to epidemic. I won't be taking public health advice from an opportunist lier who has only ever thought about himself.

Littlehouseonthefairy · 07/02/2022 22:35

The sooner the better. Children and young people are still missing too much education and too much of their lives.

Endofdaysarehere · 07/02/2022 22:39

@pollygartertidywife that’s a really interesting number you’ve quoted.

Can you source it?

I’d be interested about the age/co-morbidities of these 500 people on ventilators.

I understood that there were currently no people in intensive care with covid(although I cannot source this as I heard it on radio 4).

Tillyloveslettuce · 07/02/2022 22:43

Littlehoiaeonthefairy my class are missing their education because their class teacher (me) is currently off sick with covid. Even if isolation ended - I would still be too sick to work. Letting it run rampant through schools is only going to add to the disruption.

Fairylightsongs · 07/02/2022 22:44

Yes it’s the wrong month, on the 24 March self isolation expires and we don’t do it any more. And then free lateral flow tests end in July.

Cherryblossoms85 · 07/02/2022 22:47

It has to end one day given it's basically a cold now for nearly everyone. It's sad if people get sick, but there were plenty of infectious diseases before that were also bad for some people. Doesn't seem fair or proportionate to have millions of healthy children missing school.

leotardrock · 07/02/2022 22:51

What I've noticed though is that when the scientists talk about isolation coming to an end they also talk about people voluntarily staying at home when they feel unwell, not going to work with cold symptoms & generally thinking about 'disease control'.
When everyone else talk about it, it's all about 'getting back to normal' & I'm not staying at home with a sniffle & employers not paying people a decent level of sick pay - it will be a disaster!

It was 474 on the 4th Feb. That is the last day there is data for coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/healthcare?areaType=overview%26areaName=United%20Kingdom#card-patients_in_mechanical_ventilation_beds

Lottle · 07/02/2022 23:06

@Tillyloveslettuce
Agreed!

Theunamedcat · 07/02/2022 23:11

Considering I might have it again I think we should stick to the isolating ds1 had it gave it to ds2 he came down on day nine and on his day 8 im coughing till my eyes stream aching and sneezing same symptoms I had before! So I'm testing again we all had this Christmas its obviously more contagious I'm triple jabbed too

Why is it a disaster? It will be like what happens now with the cold.

If you're too I'll to work of course you should be off sick, but if you're healthy enough to go in you go in. We've had the option to be vaccinated now. We can't keep people out of work unless it's necessary

This is not true

Toadsinholes · 08/02/2022 06:24

About bloody time. My totally asymptomatic dd is off school for the 2nd time, missed a very important sports competition at the weekend (one that’s pretty vital for her level of competing), and another week off school when she didn’t even have a runny nose. I’m absolutely furious healthy children are missing out 2 years in when we have vaccines.

Have you ever walked round with a cold? If so then you knowingly walked round with something that could infect and kill people.

And if you're going to chuck numbers around get them right there are currently under 500 people on mechanical ventilation (474), the lowest its been in 7 months and the number has been steadily dropping even when numbers of infections went through the roof.

Common cold kills people, generally the old elderly, you've never been to the shop or work or school run with a cold?

I think you mean "endemic"

I'm sorry you're off sick with Covid, and hope you recover soon.

Covid is already "running rampant" in schools as evidenced by your illness. The removal of isolation can't prevent something that's already happening with isolation!

What the removal of isolation will do however is to stop those children and teachers from isolating who aren't too ill to be at school for the full isolation period - which is the large majority. It will also hasten the time it takes a wave to pass through a school, shortening any residual disruption.

At some point in your life you have walked around carrying a virus which you have passed on and infected someone else. Maybe even someone vulnerable. It seems bizarre to me that people only start moralising about it when it relates to this one specific virus.

There are definitely people in ICU with covid as someone I know is in there. However, they're in for something else, and caught the covid in hospital.

Theunamedcat · 08/02/2022 08:13

@Fairylightsongs

It's a disaster because currently if your off sick with covid you have to isolate by law so you can't really be punished by your bosses remove that and people start dragging themselves to work infecting people or else they lose there jobs
