Isolation time question, a bit bamboozled

I’ve not kept up with the changing rules as thankfully covid hadn’t arrived at my house until this weekend, just when I was beginning to think we were superhuman. Sadly not it seems.

DS tested positive on lateral flow on Saturday, and PCR yesterday. There was a bit of confusion as to whether he needed the PCR so please don’t jump down my throat about it, we haven’t used up any NHS testing resourced until now.

Does he have to isolate for the full 10 days or can he released early negative with 2 lateral flows? Do we could day zero from the Saturday lateral flow, or is Sunday day zero with PCR? No idea.

He is 16 and not vaccinated. He’s feeling fine apart from a runny nose, no temperature or other symptoms.
He’s currently isolating in his bedroom but it seems a bit daft to keep him in the house for 10 days when he’s perfectly well - in the before times he’d have been at school!

Sorry for all the typos, I’m trying to do a work call while writing this!

Day zero is the day he tested first so Saturday, he can test on day 5&6 if negative then he gets early release

Mediocrates · 07/02/2022 16:34

It will depend on where you are too: I'm in Scotland currently on Day 6, so won't be free until I have a second negative LFD test tomorrow. It's seven days in Scotland, not sure about other home nations

Mediocrates · 07/02/2022 16:35

Seven days for early release, I mean. Ten days otherwise

Mediocrates · 07/02/2022 16:38

Sorry - didn't even answer your question! Day zero is first day of symptoms or positive test, whichever came first. LFD test counts for that, so you don't have to start again from the PCR date

actiongirl1978 · 07/02/2022 16:59

Day zero is day of positive test if no symptoms, or day symptoms started

WilsonMilson · 07/02/2022 17:18

Brilliant thanks for your help, we’re not in Scotland, so the days 5 and 6 apply to us. Saturday is day zero and the therefore Thursday and Friday are days 5 and 6, and if he tests negative on both days he’s free to go out after a negative test on Friday.

Thank you, that’s much clearer than the info I had looked at.

Go to NHS website and register the lateral flow test, then they send you all info.

My DS tested positive on Saturday too and that's exactly how I've calculated it. I really need him to test negative on Thurs and Fri so he can go back to nursery...
