Possible costochondritis after Covid?

I tested positive for covid 3 weeks ago, I felt quite ill for a few days, mainly tiredness, high temp and sore throat. Tested negative on day 10 and went to develop a dry cough for around 4 days. I feel fine now, all symptoms have gone, but I have developed this pain in my sternum that moves also to the back in between my shoulder blades. It’s very mild when I wake up in the morning ( 2 days ago it went until the evening), but it gets worse in the afternoon and it becomes quite sore. Someone at work today mentioned costochondristis, has anyone had it post covid, does the pain sound similar? The muscle in my back and neck feel really tight too, and the pain at the front is at the top of my sternum going down 3/4 ribs.

I get costo after viruses and sometimes for no reason at all. Been having it on and off for over 10 years. Do you have quite a skinny or boney chest/rib area? Apparently you can be more prone to it if you do.
One sure way to tell if it’s costo is wen you palpate the area there will be a tender spot somewhere. Sometimes it’s quite hard to find the tender area due to referred pain making it difficult to pinpoint.

Thank you for replying, I'm not slim at all, but I don't have much fat on torso, I can feel my ribs. The pain is my sternum, I can't find any point that is particularly sore, but it it feels tender a bit all over when I press? The pain seems linked to the pain in between my shoulder blades too.

This is interesting. I had covid over Christmas and really didn't suffer too much at all.. but I have been feeling what is like I pain in my heart since testing negative. It comes on most when I am exercising or a bit stressed. Obviously I have convinced myself I have a heart condition.. however I did have costocondritus (sp) about ten years ago and remember convincing myself of the same.. so I am kind of thinking it must be that post covid.

This is interesting, I was surprised as I started having the pain too once I started feeling better? I didn't have a particularly bad cough so it can't really be from straining. I would have worried about my heart too under normal circumstances, but I had lots of tests for my heart in the summer, and it was all fine.

I had pleurisy post covid. It was non palpable pain, sometimes sharp, sometimes constant but I ended up having it for weeks. Was initially investigated for a PE but thankfully wasn't one.

Did it feel like a pain in the middle of your sternum or more in your lungs?

My daughter had Covid at start of Feb and now has had severe costo for 4 weeks.

She’s been on codeine for the pain and been given 6 weeks of Naproxen.

I believe it’s linked to the Covid she had as it hit her out of no where.

I really worried as the pain has been level 10 for her with attacks hitting 2 or 3 times a day and then constant duller pain the rest of the time.

I’m just hoping it goes soon.

I'd go back to your doctor. The heart tests you had were before you had Covid.
I've had costo and currently have chest pains (post-Covid). They're slightly different from costo but your description could be either. My GP has referred me for an ecg.

Stormchaser1502 · 06/04/2022 06:56

I’ve had costo on and off for about 20years. It comes on a week or so after I’ve had a stressful situation, or been unwell.
I had Covid 3 weeks ago all, and I’ve got costo now in my sturnum. Also in my back.
I checked by pressing on my sturnum and found the point of pain. (I usually get it in my ribs not my sturnum)
My back pain was apparent when I made myself relax and rotated my shoulders, I could feel the knots in my back muscles.

I hope you feel better soon OP, it can feel really debilitating

NightmareLoon · 06/04/2022 07:33

I have costochondritis and had a small flare-up after Covid, but as others said, you can pinpoint the painful joint. I'd talk to your GP in the first instance of any pain of this type.

Daqqe · 06/04/2022 21:02

Yes! I was diagnosed with this after covid in October! I’d never had it before & was a bit freaked out something was wrong my my heart 🙈 I had awful pain laying down in particular.. my GP did a thorough check including getting me a 24 hour heart monitor. All fine!

It cleared up in time, maybe a couple months, I don’t remember 100% .. I took ibuprofen regularly, that helped!

DaffodilGreen · 08/04/2022 12:13

Those of you with Costo, do any of you get ‘attacks’ where the pain is stabbing and debilitating. My daughter gets these. They last for about 20 minutes and during this time it comes in waves several times lasting about a minute each. The peak of these waves is 10/10 pain and she’s crying. Then when the waves are over the pain subsides to her back. After the attack passes it leaves her exhausted and with a numb feeling in her legs.

Does anyone else have this?

Teenylittlefella · 08/04/2022 12:29

My 14 year old got pericarditis recently, possibly linked to second covid jab. Luckily it was quite mild. They did check for costrocondritis but his ECG showed it was the heart.

Cocodreams · 09/04/2022 22:43

The GP diagnosed costochrondritis with me too, but mine started 4 days before the first Covid symptom, and then I finally tested positive 3 days after that. I had a mild flare/up last week but the original bout was pure agony. I thought I was having a heart attack
