Confused about travelling to Germany: Daughter will turn 12 whilst we're away - is there a grace period to get jabbed?

Just looking at possible summer travel and we would like to go to Germany with DDs who are 9 and 11.

We would probably drive so will come through france - French regulatuions look similar to German from what I can see

Looking at German travel advice it seems that anyone aged 12 and over needs to show that they are vaccinated to avoid quarantine. DD is age 11 and turns 12 on 1 August when we are likely to be away.

I know this is all subject to change but I'm confused

First off will the UK government mandate vaccines for under 12s who are not vulnerable?

Do they check your vaccine status as you cross the border from France? We would be in the car and my memory of travelling before is that theres no active border post but have these been resurrected due to Covid?

If we enter Germany on say 29 July when DD is 11 will it be OK or do we actively have to show proof of vaccine etc to gain entry to the hotel/ venues once we have arrived?

If we entered Germany after her birthday would they accept either the first dose having been done or is there a grace period in which to be vaccinated?

Any knowledge/experience/ speculation?

Tricky one. I've always assumed whatever travel regulations are in place apply for the whole time you are in country, not just entry of port. But unsure for covid.

I thought you have to be vaccinated if you’re over 5 in Germany?

Schulte · 01/02/2022 13:43

Yes, I just checked. Kids aged 6 and over need to be fully vaccinated to avoid quarantine. Sorry!

Otherwise they need to quarantine and then get a negative test on day 5. After that, they are free.

However these are current rules and they will likely change before the summer!

Anyone who isn’t vaccinated needs to quarantine for 5 days when they enter Germany, regardless of age. Friends who went to eg Greece with under 12s at Christmas had to keep their children isolated for 5 days when they came back. Even if primary age.

You need proof of vaccination + negative test/booster for entry to restaurants, museums, etc at the moment. Currently under 18’s are exempt from the vaccination requirement for venues and events, they can use a recovery pass or a negative test from the day.

But all of this might change between now an August. UK might be off the risk list, the pass rules might be relaxed… who knows.

Anyone who isn’t vaccinated needs to quarantine for 5 days when they enter Germany, regardless of age.

Isn't this due to change from February (if you're an EU citizen)? You can take a negative test if you're not vaccinated or recovered (genesen)?

If there is such a rule change coming, then I suspect it will be for people travelling within the EU and likely won’t apply for people coming from the UK, regardless of their citizenship. But I may be wrong! I do hope travelling will get a lot easier.

Pretty sure things will change before the summer, though that doesn't make things easy to plan.

German DP flew to Germany for the first time in two years this morning. Apart from the relentless "you are obligated to remain 150cm from other people (apart from when queueing, eating, drinking, flying 🙄)" it was all very smooth. They seem to be slowly unclenching a little

EileenGC · 01/02/2022 17:51

It’s been very smooth since the pandemic started, I’ve never experienced any difficulties here and that’s saying something.

I also don’t know anything about the quarantine for travellers from high-risk countries being lifted. There is a difference between travel vaccine requirements, and the 2G/2G+/3G rules which affect entry to shops, restaurants, venues… all indoor spaces basically.

I would check closer to the time, it’s bound to change multiple times between now and August.
