Is it possible my son has caught covid a second time in 39 days

DS had a positive covid test on the 21st December. He has AN so we didn’t isolate him, isolating the household instead and no one else caught it (only double vaxxed at that time) so we kind of suspected it was delta given how transmissible omicron is. It was Christmas there was kissing and hugging a plenty so it must have been down to vaccine that we didn’t catch.

Roll on just over a month and he has a new cough and a temp and 2 positive antigens. The advice here is not to do PCR for 3 months after a past positive PCR but the GP told us to do one anyway and we are awaiting results. Is it possible he could have caught omicron and how likely is it?

You can do a pcr test if you get new symptoms. The government say to do one in this scenario. Always the risk it could be the old infection and you may have to isolate again.

PurpleDaisies · 01/02/2022 10:38

To be clear, if you get new symptoms, you should still take a pcr test within 90 days.

Lots of reinfection with omicron. Two positive lfts seems pretty nailed on he has it again.

Devilmakes3 · 01/02/2022 10:43

Yes that was what I was thinking, it could be a new infection it might be remnants of the old infection. He is self isolating now anyway, much easier this time with the rest of the family in school/work.

Yes it's possible, it's even possible that both infections could be Omicron. There was an article about a week ago saying doctors in South Africa have seen Omicron reinfections

Devilmakes3 · 01/02/2022 10:49

I hadn’t even thought about an omicron reinfection flax. He is in flying form today compared to yesterday but still has the cough. He has always had a dodgy chest, gets regular chest infections and was wiped out by the flu a few years back so he is actually quite a likely candidate to get reinfected. Damn.

If lft are positive hes got it again. Several threads have had people with it agsin around 5w

Chuzzle · 01/02/2022 10:59

My DC had covid at the very beginning of Jan, had negative LFT and went back to school. On Tuesday last week she had a positive test, so I would say it is possible.
However this variant is seemingly toying with the LFTs - false negatives all over the place, and positives for a long time after onset of symptoms.
Hope your DS isn't too poorly and keeps it to himself!

There are two main types of Omicron. The one going around at Xmas was Omicron BA.1. The other type is Omicron BA.2 and has overtaken the first in some countries, including Denmark ATM and is thought to be more transmissable. It seems they are both similarly 'mild' for illness though.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 01/02/2022 11:00

My DD has new symptoms and tested positive yesterday after having it over Christmas.

Devilmakes3 · 01/02/2022 11:56

Oh god snoop it is a complete PITA isn’t it.

Totally possible to get it again.

Theunamedcat · 01/02/2022 12:05

Ds tested positive on a lateral flow just after Christmas his pcr was negative though but because he had symptoms it was assumed a false negative on the pcr all however its rife in his school so we have been asked to test him again which I did but one was contaminated with blood and came back positive 119 said retest over the weekend three came back negative so I returned him to school then he had another two positive he has zero symptoms so we have decided to take a pcr go with those results and not test the poor kid again unless I absolutely have to he has sen and finds it all too stressful

Devilmakes3 · 01/02/2022 13:08

That sounds like a complete pain theunnamed PCR back positive 🤦‍♀️

Oh no that sucks I'm dreading ds pcr coming back positive it means I miss out on ds 1s parents evening I really need to go to this parents evening 🙇‍♀️
Theunamedcat · 01/02/2022 22:45

Ds has come back positive for covid too but he still has zero symptoms what is going on? There is nothing wrong with him at all he has had it a month ago with symptoms now its literally not even a cold

Devilmakes3 · 02/02/2022 10:21

Nooooooooo @Theunamedcat it is such a pain. Track and trace told me they wouldn’t know of it was the original infection or a new infection but it has to be treated as a new infection if new symptoms show.

Yes. Dd tested positive around the 14th December, we all had it at the time and she was last to get it. She had no symptoms!

Fast forward to the 15th jan, she caught it again after an outbreak at school. This time with some symptoms.

So definitely possible.

To add, we all had it in December. 3 out of 4 had symptoms and Dd didn't but was positive.

Only Dd got it the second time. The rest of us escaped!
