Clear of all symptoms apart from cough and loss of taste/smell for 48 hours before school?

Is this a new rule?

DDs 6, Year 2. Just had covid, today is day 6. As well as the two tests on consecutive days she has to be 48 hours clear of all symptoms apart from the cough and loss of taste and/or smell before they can go back to school.

I know the temperature is a national rule, but is this normal for schools?

She’s on Day 6 and negative, but won’t be going back yet as I am still positive, but it feels a bit restrictive anyway?

She has nosebleeds as part of another condition but these ramped up during her having covid, but she can’t go back until 48 hours after her last one, which could be never?

What about mouth ulcers? She’s had some really huge ones that are still healing that may not have healed by the time I’m negative and able to do the school run.

DDs still very tired with it, which I’ve been told can last months, so is she supposed to miss all that school?

Her school have said they mean every symptom apart from the cough and loss of taste and smell.

I get it they’ve had an outbreak and had to close classes/year groups. I get the temperature thing as it’s a national rule (and probably shows your still fighting infection) but every other symptom feels a bit much.

DD is suspected dyslexic, DCD (the new name for dyspraxia), and has a speech disorder being out of school for 5-10days due to covid in the house was just about ok, but how can I work if she’s not allowed back until all symptoms have disappeared? Also she’ll never make any progress if she’s not allowed back and that’s without the fines.

So is this normal with schools? I get they have no measures in place to stop spread and I have absolutely written to my MP and the local council to raise the issue, but I do feel like school are now punishing us for the lack of measures?

Just say the only other symptom she had was a temperature which has gone. Honestly covid has so many other possible symptoms no one would ever go back. It's not possible to say that any other symptom was definitely due to covid.

This isn't a rule at my DDs school, nor have I heard of it elsewhere

@Seeline Unfortunately though some of her symptoms like the nosebleeds are obvious and I have it in writing from school that she needs 48 hours without those. If she has one at school within 2 days of returning she'll be sent home.

And her ulcers are obvious as she's not eating much due to the pain and again school said they'd send her home because they're a covid symptom.

Do you have evidence/previous communication with school that nosebleeds are an ongoing condition for her?

Soontobe60 · 30/01/2022 11:25

Just send her in. She should be going tomorrow regardless of whether you’re positive or not.

Bigfathairyones · 30/01/2022 11:27

Bonkers. Not a rule I've heard of elsewhere and T&T confirmed to me last week that it is the temperature that needs to have disappeared. Cough and anosmia might be around for some time.

Firefliess · 30/01/2022 11:29

The only three official covid symptoms are cough, temperature and loss of smell/taste. A long as she's free of the temperature and testing negative on days 5/6 she can return. A nosebleed can be brought on by various things but isn't an official covid symptom.

@Soontobe60 I can't, school have said while I'm positive that she can't attend. They've said this to other parents as well, one girl missed over 4 weeks of school because it ripped through her family 1 by 1 and school would not let her back while there was a positive case in her household even though she'd had it.

Her nosebleeds are caused by rhinitis which is triggered by post nasal drip and allergies. But school are saying because covid made them worse she can't return - DD told them on the phone she was having a lot of nosebleeds they then emailed me and told me she needs 48 hours without any symptoms including the nosebleeds to return.

That's kind of you to offer to do the school run.

I can understand the please don’t come
In with a positive household case as there is what a 50/50 chance of child getting it. But if child has already had it then it much point. Maybe the school can’t cope with all coughing and vomiting and not feeling 100% even after they have tested negative and it causes more disruption. Are school sending work home?

I'd go to the chair of governors armed with government policy etc to be honest. This is crazy bullshit.

itispersonal · 30/01/2022 11:42

Some schools are setting their own rules!!

But I sure the government website says on 6 day l they can return if no temperature.not no symptoms of COVID-19, and 2 negative tests for the day before and today. Lack of smell/ taste can lasts months!!! Long covid??? Years!!
