Hi
My DS aged 6 has been offered the vaccine due to a mild heart condition. I am waiting advice from his consultant but would love to hear from parents whose DC have had it in this age group-

Did they have any side effects?
Did they tolerate the injection? I'm worried he will refuse and it would be very hard to hold him (eg compared to when they had there baby and toddler jabs etc)
Thanks

No but my DC will have it when he turns 5 later in the year. He has TOF/OA. I’m sure he will hate having it but he has been hospitalised with viral infections before so it’s worth it.

If you are worried about the pain when vaccinating - you can buy Emla numbing cream from a pharmacy. I used it for both of my daughters 3 year jabs and neither of them felt a thing

Not covid vaccine but my DD5 had to have some injections recently. Definitely harder to hold than when they're babies but speaking about it beforehand helped. Told her what would happen, that I had the same before and she'd had jabs when she was little, I didn't lie and say it wouldn't hurt at all but said she'd feel a sharp scratch but it would be over very quickly and explained why it was needed.

I can't speak for side effects of course because mine hasn't had it, sorry.

Yes, both my 5 year old and 11 year old had their first jabs two weeks ago. I'm in NZ, where all kids in this age group are now offered the vaccine. Both kids have been absolutely fine. The youngest one had a slight sore arm but the eldest didn't even have that. Anecdotally, I don't know any kids who've had a bad reaction so far.

In NZ too. My 10 year old had a slightly sore arm but that was all. The needle they are using even here is very fine. She’s not fussed about injections, never has been, but I’m a T1 diabetic so she sees me sticking myself with needles all the time.

About 30% of kids in NZ have had there first jab in NZ in the last couple of weeks.

Thank you everyone! Good to hear your kids were all fine. I wasn't expecting DS to qualify so think I was a bit shocked when the text to book came through. I've booked him in next week and will get some numbing cream as you said. Thanks for the advice.

Yes, my 8yo DTs had it in the US at Christmas. We're going back next week for their second doses.

One complained her arm ached the next day but other than that nothing else in terms of side effects. One of them has had Covid since though, but zero symptoms.

I'm in Ireland. My DD (11) has had two doses. She had a slightly sore arm twice but nothing more.

My son got one dose, and he seemed to enjoy the experience! He was a bit sleepier than normal the next day, but no side effects otherwise.
