Foods and drinks to eat to help your body fight covid

Apart from fruit and veg are their any super foods in particular that will boost your body's immune system and help fight off covid?
My DS 5 has it and I'm giving him lots of fluids, fruit including kiwi and smoothies.
Any other immune boosting foods or drinks you are having?

My kids all had it the other week. They were unaffected apart from one having a very mild cough for 2 days. They ate and drank as normal, I just made sure they were drinking enough. I didn't really have any symptoms myself apart from a complete lack of energy so I just ate whatever I wanted for those few days.

vitamin D tablets or gummies - stick to 10iu for a young child. Possibly Sambucol liquid as it helps with respiratory things and it has a pleasant taste so no problem getting it into most kids. Maybe Boots Dual defense nasal spray.

I know those are not foods - some mushrooms have vitamin D and yoghurt may help with good bacteria in the gut.

Vitamin D, so red meat, eggs, fortified breakfast cereals and oily fish, I don't eat much fish so take cod liver oil and vit D supplement

TwentinQuarantino · 28/01/2022 13:14

As mentioned above vitamin D is important so you could give DS drops or similar. Salmon and cod liver oil are also good sources of vitamin D and getting out in the garden.
Foods such as cheese, red meat, berries and green leafy veg contain zinc and vitamin C which aid recovery. Lots of warm drinks, preferably with honey, lemon and perhaps a drop of blackseed oil.

I try and follow Tim Spector's advice around diets, not for Covid but for health, trying to eat 30 plants a week, fermented foods such as Kimchi and cutting out processed food as much as possible 👍🏻

Vitamin D supplement. You can’t get enough from food and we don’t make it from sunlight in this country until April.

Probiotics. Lots of variety in the diet in terms of fruits and veg. Kefir for the gut too.

BasiliskFace · 28/01/2022 16:13

I've been on the Actimel. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it feels like it does!

onedayoranother · 28/01/2022 16:24

Vitamin D as stated above. Go easy on the fruit - there's a lot of sugar in there.

FromEden · 28/01/2022 16:39

Not food but kids vitamin d and zinc gummies should help. Also vitamin c and elderberry/sambucol.

I don’t understand the reasoning behind recommending Vitamin D. My home in the sun has a huge death toll from covid relative to it’s population. Vitamin D has been no help whatsoever.

Delatron · 28/01/2022 17:16

Where is your home @Esspee

Some hot countries have populations low in vitamin D for various reasons.

The main research on vitamin D is that it lessons the severity of respiratory illnesses. Not enough conclusive research done on Covid unfortunately but I’ve seen some small studies that make me think it is worth taking. But it’s so important and many people are deficient in this country during the winter. Everyone should take it. But worth getting levels checked.

I think the study I saw found that people in ICU were mainly hugely deficient in vitamin D. What they couldn’t assertain was whether they were already deficient and this contributed to disease severity or whether the illness depletes vitamin D.

Either way it’s worth taking!

Spidey66 · 28/01/2022 17:25

Agree with vitD.

I heard it was good for covid about a year back, paid no attention. I broke my shoulder in September and have been taking a vitD and calcium supplement since as I thought given it's winter I'm unlikely to get any vitD from sunshine and that supplement will help recovery from the shoulder injury.

I'm no scientist, but I feel it can't do any harm in also fighting covid

Spidey66 · 28/01/2022 17:29

Also not had covid but I do seem to have a strong immunity. I worked on the frontline throughout the first lockdown. All I've had over past 2 years infection wise is (suspected) norovirus over NY which although unpleasant lasted only 2/3 days.

It appears to be one in a long list of possible mitigations. Age, weight etc. are more impactful but the OP can't do anything about that.

Brazil, for example has high levels of vitamin D deficiency despite its climate.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/01/2022 21:24

I tested positive yesterday. It's floored me. I am immunocompromised, so have stopped all my meds to give me a good chance of fighting it off quickly! Probably from my germy kids!!

Katie517 · 28/01/2022 21:41

Vitamin D, vitamin C (the dissolvable ones are quite good) turmeric, a probiotic like yakult, lots of green veg and berries/ fruits. I also make a drink by juicing 2 oranges a teaspoon of turmeric, Manuka honey and hot water. Lots of fluids and some fresh air.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/01/2022 21:59

@Delatron

Brazil, for example has high levels of vitamin D deficiency despite its climate.
35% of Brazilians are obese.
Delatron · 28/01/2022 22:05

Yes @MrsTerryPratchett it’s the obesity link.

So obesity causes the vitamin D deficiency.
