Do we need an oximeter?

All covid positive in our household for first time. One 65 year old, one 53 one 17. Do we need to get an oximeter? Husband thinks I'm overreacting, unnecessary expense.

I have one, felt I was overdoing it when I bought it BUT I found it extremely reassuring when I felt breathless at height of my covid bout. I think definitely get one. Hope you all recover soon Flowers

ThatWasThat · 28/01/2022 00:17

I would

CheshireChat · 28/01/2022 00:20

Not sure if it was just my area, but we were sent one by the team that checks up on you over the phone.

My mum has asthma though.

Tealightsandd · 28/01/2022 00:21

It's helpful to have. Lots of inexpensive options (obviously depending on your financial situation - as I realise for many people on low incomes and benefits, any extra expense might be too much).

If however you can afford the £10-20, it's a useful item to have to keep in your medicine cabinet. Not just for Covid.

I wish you all a good recovery Flowers

rach2713 · 28/01/2022 00:33

I have one and haven't used it there is 5 of us that have covid 3/5/9/14 and 35 plus i have asthma. Its what is going to make you feel comfortable and put your mind at rest really..

RenGreen · 28/01/2022 00:34

Currently got covid and I find it reassuring

Hairyfriend · 28/01/2022 00:49

Some GP's are giving them out to their patients who have covid and lung conditions. Pulse oximeters are great and certainly have their place for some circumstances- but only when the patient and family know what the readings mean, troubleshooting when the figures seem really out there, and know when to seek assistance or just try testing on another finger.

Unless you know what you are looking at, it can be like a blood pressure machine that just brings panic and anxiety to people.

AlwaysLatte · 28/01/2022 01:02

I think everyone should have a decent one.

Miraloma · 28/01/2022 07:58

Just beware super cheap Amazon ones from unheard of brands, if you're relying on medical data then please look at reputable brands/suppliers.

No

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/01/2022 08:24

If it makes you feel better then I would say get a decent one. I don’t even own a thermometer though!

CarrieBlue · 28/01/2022 08:24

You don’t ‘need’ one but it could be reassuring or indicate you need more help. If you can afford it I’d not call it extra expense.

Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2022 08:40

My relative (CEV) was given one by the community team when they got Covid but it read about 5 lower than the one the ambulance crew used which was a bit of a worry. So not sure of accuracy of them in all cases.

trumpisagit · 28/01/2022 08:43

I would get one.
I had a text yesterday to say I qualify for enhanced oxygen monitoring if I text positive.
Coincidentally I am off for a PCR this morning.
I already have an oximeter at home.

tumpymummy · 28/01/2022 15:48

So I've discovered that in my area they are sending them out to over 50s. So already Ive received one and am monitoring my blood oxygen levels and heart rate three times a day. Apparently Im on a virtual covid ward!

You don’t need one but it’s very reassuring to have. Mine was only a tenner x

StellaGibs · 28/01/2022 15:51

Im 33 and low risk but have one. Ive been checking it because Ive been getting dizzy. I think theyre useful.
