He can't have it AGAIN can he?

DS tested positive (for the second time) on 6 Jan. He went back to school after negative lateral flows on days 7&8.

He's been identified as a close contact, so did a LF yesterday (negative) and this morning. Today's was clearly negative at half an hour, but I've just gone to bin it and there is a pale line. I'm assuming this is an evaporation line - he can't have covid again so soon can he?

Test him again tomorrow. You aren't supposed to read the test after the time has passed.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 26/01/2022 13:25

Unless he has symptoms you should not be doing any kind of routine testing until he is 90 days from his last positive PCR. If he is asymptomatic, it is likely the LFT is picking up his previous infection

Forfamily123 · 26/01/2022 13:25

You’re not supposed to LFT for 90 days afters. At this point you should get him a PCR if he develops symptoms but no other testsing.

marqueses · 26/01/2022 13:26

Don't the instructions specifically say not to read them after more than 30 minutes?

yaboreme · 26/01/2022 13:26

My sisters kids had it late December and have just tested positive again...less than 4 weeks ago!

It is possible.

Hope you are all ok

Luckymummytoone · 26/01/2022 21:23

Exact same happened with my child too! The lines not for stronger though so no idea.
But we’re recommended at work to continue with lft’s two weeks after positive and that’s nhs. Think it’s just a PCR that you’re not supposed to do for 90 days unless new symptoms x

Luckymummytoone · 26/01/2022 21:24

Got stronger not for x

Wizzbangfizz · 26/01/2022 21:31

Is he Ill?

Rainbowsandstorms · 26/01/2022 21:32

I’d re do it in the morning and see if it’s stronger.

But would this not be a false positive? That's why you are not supposed to test for 90 days after infection - the result won't be reliable.
jgw1 · 26/01/2022 21:34

The aim of Boris' policy of letting covid run wild maximising potential for variants and importing all possible variants as quickly as possible is in the hope that one can catch it several times a month.

Covidworries · 26/01/2022 21:42

Do test tomorrow and see
But yes its perfectly possible to be positive again after a short time. Lft have been negative so if positive tomorrow in the time of test then assume real positive.
Someone i know is on third infection since october ( more ill this time too).
100k of cases today all first infections not shown in data through are the reinfections which 2 thirds of cases are reinfections so alot more people are testing positive for subsequent time than first infections. Hospitalisations up too

ChristmasMouseInHouse · 26/01/2022 21:45

I would retest tomorrow.

I work for the NHS and we are meant to take 2 lateral flow tests per week, including once our LFTs have gone negative again post COVID. I had COVID in October and then was a close contact in December - the work policy was to do PCR unless you had had COVID in the last 90 days, in which case it was daily LFTs for 7 days. The only time we are told to do PCR within those 90 days was if we had developed new symptoms.

I have read about other people whose children have tested positive again within a very short time frame so I think it's (sadly) entirely possible he could have it again, especially as it's so prolific in schools at the moment.

However you do need to read the tests in the correct time frame so it might be fine! Fingers crossed!

yaboreme · 26/01/2022 21:47

@stickygotstuck you'd think so, 2 have tested positive 1 is negative, sister is negative and partner positive?

They are all really ill again so not sure how it all is with LFT and PCR's but they definitely have it again...

yaboreme · 26/01/2022 21:49

Should also say they have all been doing very negative LFT tests over Christmas etc.... now very positive again.

Emails from schools relating to outbreaks etc...

It's never ending.

PurpleDaisies · 26/01/2022 21:51

It seems to be quite common to get a line a long way after the time you’re supposed to read it. It’s meaningless.

Do a fresh test and read it when you’re supposed to, then bin it.

cheekychaplin · 26/01/2022 21:53

The line was after the read time. Most of mine do this after a few hours.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/01/2022 21:58

I thought it was PCRs that you’re not supposed to take for 90 days after testing positive and that LFTs should be taken….
Have I got it all wrong?

At one point it was both. Susan Hopkins was asked about this during a recent press conference and confirmed most people go back to being negative on lfts quite quickly so any new positives would be a new infection (or words to that effect!).

You're correct there is a lot of misinformation on this thread!!

However this particular test I would read as negative as it specifically says not to read after the allotted time.

stayathomer · 26/01/2022 22:03

A lady down the road is extremely vulnerable and has been in and out of hospital a lot in the last few months. She tested positive twice within 3 weeks. Heard a doctor on the radio saying it's happening a lot more now

PurpleDaisies · 26/01/2022 22:04

There’s never been clear guidance about whether you should or shouldn’t be doing lfts for 90 days after covid. It’s frustrating.

Covidworries · 26/01/2022 22:16

It has been assumed that testing positive for a second time in a short period means forst was delta and second omicron, but as we are now finding out about 3rd infections all in short succession does this mean that omicron doesnt protect against omicron?

stickygotstuck · 27/01/2022 10:17

@PurpleDaisies

Exactly!

DD's school asked all students to do supervised LFT in school first day back in January. They said all kids who had Covid in the 90 days were exempt.

Then we got an email the day before the went back to say guidance had changed and now they did want those kids to do test too (not possible, too short notice to book a slot by then).

So DD is now doing LFTs twice a week but we are not sure whether she's supposed to or no. School says yes please, so we are going along with that. But who knows what's actually best!

Covidworries · 27/01/2022 13:35

@stickygotstuck
Surely its obvious if the tests she has been going are negative then change to positive thats due to reinfection
