Working arrangements

The first week back in January there were a lot of people off sick with covid. We work with the public and have to have someone from each team in the office, even though due to covid we don't actually see anyone because the queries are so small just the customer service team see the public. The organisation is now doing part working from home and part office permanently after restrictions end.

A manager who lives an hour and a half away came in to cover as there were no staff due to people being off with covid. He was very angry and has now made more people come in now permanently to 'support the office' yet again people are not seeing the public. It was an inconvenience to him and he is trying to pay people back with punishment. He knew how far away the job is so why take it on if you won't travel. Also, the customer service team are annoyed they have to come in a few days a week and have raised this issue so are making sure that no-one else gets that benefit of working from home a lot.

No-one likes this manager. I found him unprofessional as he swears in the office. He was recruited in lockdown so never actually came into the office full time. He only comes to the office once a month yet expects others to come in multiple times a week. He also has threatened and said people will be disciplined if they do not come in bang on 9am when they are in the office that day.

I just don't like being in an environment where people are being threatened yet some people have not been to the office in months.

Have peoples contracts been changed? Ours have been changed to stipulate our work from home arrangements now. He’d be hard pushed to make people come in if their working terms have been formally changed.

Unless your contracts say your normal place of work is at home then your management is well within their rights to expect every member of staff attend the specified place of work every single day.
Also if your getting paid from 9am it's not beyond the reasonable to expect staff be in the workplace ready to work at that time without facing discipline procedures for failing to do so.
