Teen with symptoms but negative LFT, could it become positive?

Or is that a silly question? My teen (one vaccine so far, booster soon) today has a temperature and saying they ache all over. Paracetamol not doing much, only alternating with nurofen is helping. Last temp was 38.9. LFT this evening is negative. Can I presume it won’t ‘become’ covid or could it be possible to test negative and say tomorrow test positive or is he likely safe from covid does anyone know? He is obviously at home and not school.

@YouMakeShitTea thanks that makes me feel better. We live quite an insulated life so have struggled lately to keep up with the constant changes as mostly they haven’t affected us as we don’t go anywhere.

It could becime positive yes and needs a pcr to confirm
Im positive but so far not tested positive on a LFT

worriedatthemoment · 25/01/2022 20:33

Yes you can order a home test the pcr is not much different to doing a LFT except it is nose and throat and not all LFT are

worriedatthemoment · 25/01/2022 20:35

@WhiteCatmas yes it could well not be covid but thats why you rule out with a pcr
I have covid at moment with almost zero symptoms luckily i went for a pcr and didn't rely on LFT

So test will be here earliest Thursday… no result before Friday…. How do I go about preventing passing it on in case it is positive? Tbey have been in their room all day but came down to pick at tea and sat with us this evening

Ridiculous I know as we have been dealing with this for so long but none of us has been I’ll at all and only had LFT, as a single parent my ‘sensible head’ is trying to get things in order ‘just in case’ I get ill… HmmGrin

I'm not sure you can prevent it within the house unless you isolate them in their room but I'm assuming that's not an option if they have SN. However they need to stay at home until they have the PCR result- then obviously if it's negative they are fine to go out.
It amazes me there are still people who have not had to have a PCR yet! Smile I must be into double figures by now!

Embark · 25/01/2022 20:58

@Cuwins dc go to school and that is more or less it… with their SN they don’t go out to clubs etc, school days are long so rules out Monday to Friday so weekends are generally chilling at home or walks in the woods/by the sea so they don’t mix with people that often out side of school. None of us have been ill at all the last 2 years, no colds or anything but generally we have good health. I’m triple jabbed and they have had one jab so far… we do LFT for school and I have done some for work etc but no PCR and as things keep changing I struggled to not panic as it isn’t our ‘usual’!

Fair enough. I hope it didn't sound like I was having a go as that wasn't my intention, it just makes me laugh at how unlucky I must be!
Obviously he won't be able to go to school if he is symptomatic until he has a negative PCR.

No not at all, I know we live in a bubble. No won’t be in at school, I have already emailed. If I have already ordered a test in the post (they are asleep) will it mess things up if tomorrow they decide they will try at a test site? How does it work at a site? Do they stand there watching you??

No it won't mess it up but it would waste a test. Will be quicker to get the results though so I would do it if they will. If they have been doing LFT that include the throat swab then it's just the same but in a different place reassure them. The one I have always gone to (assume they are all the same)- when I arrive the person at the entrance scans the QR code that is sent on an e-mail when you book the test. They do it through the window, they ask how many tests and do you want to do it yourself. In your case I would definitely do it to yourself as I imagine he will be more comfortable with that. Then you drive to the next person who tells you to undo the window a small way and posts the kit in an envelope through. Then you drive on and someone directs you were to park, your told to put your hazards on if you need help. They do not watch at all. Then read the instructions carefully as they are different from the LFT's in terms of what you do after you have taken the swab. Then do the swab and put it in the pot as instructed. Drive to the person at the exit who will scan you QR code again, then scan the barcode on the bag. All through the window. Then they tell you to seal the bag, then open the window just enough to pop the bag out into the collection bin. Then leave. My positive PCR was back in about 6hrs on Monday and negative ones have been taking about 24-48hrs I believe, much quicker than a postal one.

At a test site, you show a QR code and given the number of tests you've booked. Park up, do the tests but your flashing lights on. They check the tests before you seal the bags. Drive to exit, show QR code again, they scan each bag and you drop into a box

Ok thanks. If I can’t get him out to the test centre..: is there any problem If I don’t turn up but do the one at home? I just looked and over 500 slots available tomorrow .. want to check I won’t get in trouble if I’m ANP show with him?

No I don't think so. Worse case scenario they might ring you in which case just explain he has SN and wouldn't go at the last minute so your doing a home one. But I can't imagine they have time to be ringing no shows!

Good luck. Really if he is used to the throat LFT's then it is just the same but in the car. He won't even have to talk to anyone only you will. If he is only used to the nose ones then tell him you just have to do the back of your mouth before your nose but otherwise it's the same. Hope you get him there.

To protect yourself, mask up, preferably with surgical paper masks and keep as much distance as possible from those with symptoms (I understand this might be tricky in your case, but do what you can). We've had Covid twice now in our household and on both occasions one of the adults has avoided it, I presume by wearing masks. www.google.com/amp/s/theconversation.com/amp/cloth-masks-do-protect-the-wearer-breathing-in-less-coronavirus-means-you-get-less-sick-143726

I don’t want to panic him but at the same time I can’t afford to be Ill as I can’t afford to not work plus they can’t look after themselves! Maybe Today I’ll try to keep him in his room this evening if I can… but I don’t think that will do his mental health any good, he is fine all day in the bedroom but our routine is downstairs for tea and the evening…. Sad I also have to think about how this affects sibling… they also have SN and mental health problems… they already panicking all going to die of covid Sad

Did you manage to get it done?
Embark · 26/01/2022 16:13

Yes got it done thanks @Cuwins quite impressed with the set up! Not easy doing the throat part… we are used to nasal only LFT! Just hope it’s negative and results come quick!

Yeah well done him, that's an achievement I imagine. Best of luck, I'm currently positive and no worse so far than a bad cold so hopefully if he does have it he gets of lightly like me.
