Dd has covid with symptoms and having to self isolate at uni. None of us have had it in our family so I don't know what to expect. It's horrible not being able to look after her. Any experiences/advice?

Make sure she has shopping in, ask if she is doing ok, and let her sit and relax and binge watch some TV

My DS had it October 2020 - he had only just moved into halls a few weeks before. It was during restrictions so we couldn't travel to check on him. He was fine - I think most of the other 5 flatmates had it too. They had a supermarket delivery for food, and had luckily just done laundry. Friends in other flats ran errands for them if asked over WhatsApp. The uni asked to be notified of positive cases in halls and made welfare calls and even delivered a box of essentials.

If she’s vaccinated there’s a good chance she’ll be fine and just bored. Perhaps send her some favorite treats and magazines!

DD wanted lucozade and chocolate and small drinks cartons.

Maybe some extra cash for takeaways?

SirSamuelVimes · 23/01/2022 12:58

She'll be fine - just send her some money do she can get a few takeaways, ask her if she'd like a supermarket delivery paid for?

Even with symptoms she's probably going to suffer from boredom more than anything else. Maybe suggest a good box set?

Thanks so much for all of these replies. It's a good idea to send extra cash so that she can get takeaways I'll do that and see what I can send her.

Dd had it in 2020 a few weeks in. Is your dd in halls? If so is there a warden/residence assistant she can contact to arrange food deliveries from catering or get shopping delivered? Will flatmates drop off food and paracetamol etc? If you sent a parcel can someone collect it and leave at her door?

curtisandmary · 23/01/2022 13:10

Thanks LIZS she is in halls so I need to see about who can drop things to her.

Unless she has some underlying condition I'm sure she will be completely fine. Like having a cold or a mild flu like illness. Agree sending a care package and a Deliveroo voucher is probably going to go down well. Is she registered with the university/local GP practice? Even if not, remind her she can still call 111 if she's worried she's really not well and they will be able to offer advice and get her to see a Dr if necessary.

I'm know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry - it's another (less fun) part of the learning to live independently experience Smile

Mine had it and felt completely fine. Didn’t need any looking after. She just did an online shop, like normal, and cooked like normal. Mine wouldn’t do takeaways. Housemates had it too.

LIZS · 23/01/2022 13:14

Dd was in catered accommodation and got a daily food parcel with a microwave meal plus breakfast and sandwiches. Very eclectic offering though and several apples a day! Fortunately she already had some long life salads, tins and pasta pots to supplement.

DS had it at the end of 2020. His housemate kindly stayed for most of his isolation time (& didn't catch it!) as we couldn't travel to see him. He was fine, no symptoms. I sent a tesco delivery to him as he had been about to come home & had no food in. I was quite anxious as no-one was vaccinated or anything then.
Hope yours stays well.

DD had it twice. First time in Uni halls in 2020, so before vaccines. She got food delivered to her door and was only mildly ill for a few days.
Second time was last month, again very mild (omicron probably) and had friends bring her food and cook for her.

curtisandmary · 23/01/2022 14:15

Thanks. She does have asthma (sorry for drip feed!) so that's a concern. But I will remind her about 111. Thanks for the kind words of support. She does have symptoms but not too bad so far, just worried because I don't know what to expect in terms of how it will progress really. Getting her food is important I'm going to chat to her about who can help.
