Stealth Omicron

Hi all,

I just was reading that Omicron Stealth is the sister of the other Omicron.

I knew the minute Boris would want to relax Covid restrictions another variant.

Does anyone know of anyone with this new one or the symptoms?

What's does everyone think?

God knows.
The media reports everything. They don't know any more than us.
Maybe it's going to cause carnage maybe not.
We've had several reports of varient of concern that have turned out to be nothing.

I'm only concerned about the communication that the government gives out when we are in a volatile unknown situation.
I wish things could be presented like we stop and go as we can.
If things get nasty we have to react.

Because the daily Mail isn't behind a pay wall I do go there for news ( and the guardian ) online so I saw it on the newsfeed tonight.
I doubt it's anything to worry-about.

At the moment it seems there isn’t too much to worry about. It’s been here ages.

MaxNormal · 21/01/2022 19:50

It's already about 50% of Danish cases. Not more severe. Doubt you'd be able to tell the difference.

Read something about a variant called Deltacrom!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 21/01/2022 20:08

Not very stealthy, if they’re starting to identify it, is it?

To answer your question — I’m not bothered at the moment.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 21/01/2022 20:10

Worth remembering that sections of the media have become very accustomed to the revenue generated by the page-clicks of anxious people. So they report a lot of frightening-sounding coulds and maybes that often don’t turn into anything other than occasional occurrences and wild conjecture.

MaxNormal · 21/01/2022 20:12

That was a lab contamination error.

Richtea2 · 21/01/2022 20:21

New variants will come. Even if they are getting milder but we don't know yet.

@inheritancetrack

That was debunked as a result of cross contamination in a lab.
Puppylucky · 21/01/2022 20:25

Enough already!

Of course they will. We have new variants of flu every year, for example (that’s why we have annual vaccines). It will get to the point eventually though where we’re not told about them. Hopefully soon.

It's a slight variant of Omicron that causes it not to have the 'S gene' dropout that original Omicron has. A PCR test can reveal Omicron vs previous strains because it had the S gene dropout but others didn't. So it was fairly easy to identify Omicron in the lab from a PCR test. Otherwise, it needs full genomics testing doing, which is only feasible on a small proportion of positive cases because case numbers are so high.

But since Omicron has pretty much taken over 100% of covid infections now, they could probably apply the S gene dropout in reverse - if the S gene is there then it's most likely new variant Omicron (otherwise it'll be delta).

So far there's no evidence that this new variant is any more infectious, or any more potent than Omicron (although they always say that when a new variant is first discovered and known cases are still low). I think at worst it'll be a bit more transmissible than original Omicron (if not, then it won't survive in the wild).
